WWE superstars and divas have been arrested in the past for various reasons. However, it is the embarrassing charges that pique the most interest. These embarrassing reasons include being arrested for beating their girlfriends (mind you these are heavy, buff WWE superstars we're talking about), driving under the influence (especially when they should be playing a vital role as WWE brand ambassadors and role models to their fans), and possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia.
In this article, we look at 23 of the most embarrassing WWE superstar arrests of all time. Sadly, some of these examples are so ridiculous they sound like they came directly from a WWE storyline.
23 Rob Van Dam
On July 2, 2006, an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper stopped Rob Van Dam for driving over the speed limit. The trooper searched Van Dam’s car only to find drugs. Van Dam was in possession of 18 grams of marijuana and five Vicodin pills. Sabu, who was with Van Dam at the time, was also found with drug paraphernalia and nine tablets of Testolactone. Van Dam was suspended by WWE without pay for 30 days. He was also forced to drop the WWE Championship and the ECW Championship titles.
22 Santino Marella
In 2008, Santino Marella was arrested for driving under the influence. The police pulled him over at about 3 in the morning in Tampa, Florida. He was found to have a blood alcohol level of 0.06, just below the legal limit of 0.08. Later, he was released on a $500 bond. Marella announced his retirement from the ring on September 16, 2014 before having neck surgery. The Canadian wrestler has a daughter named Bianca who won the Miss Teen Ontario-World pageant in 2013.
Santino's partner in crime (figuratively speaking) is also found on this list. Emma couldn’t have stooped lower than this. This WWE diva shoplifted an iPad case from a WalMart. The security team at WalMart spotted Emma filching a red iPad case that was on sale for $21.14. She was then slapped with misdemeanor for larceny in the 6th degree. She was sentenced to one day of community service. Looks like WWE isn't paying their superstars all that well if they feel the need to steal from WalMart
20 Jimmy Uso
In 2013, Jimmy Uso was arrested for DUI in Hillsborough County, Florida. The officer noticed a car driving in the wrong direction on a one-way street. He then stopped the car only to find it was one half of the WWE tag team the Usos. Uso was arrested and released on a $500 bond. He had a .18 blood alcohol level at the time, which is more than double Florida’s legal limit. Jimmy Uso is part of the legendary Anoaʻi wrestling family along with the likes of The Rock, Rikishi and Yokozuna.
19 Brock Lesnar
Brock Lesnar was taken into custody in 2001 for the illegal possession of steroids. Go figure. Police pulled him over after he picked up a parcel. They then arrested him because they thought the contents in the parcel were steroids. Tests were then done on the pills. Brock was released when the test confirmed that the pills were not steroids but vitamins or growth hormones. Lesnar, 37, has three children and has been married to former WWE Diva Sable since.
18 Wade Barrett
On 15 June 2008, Wade Barrett was arrested with a felony and a misdemeanor. The felony involved battery on a law enforcement officer while the misdemeanor involved obstructing an officer. The incident took place outside the Champs Restaurant and Bar at around 2 pm. He was taken in and spent the night in jail. Barrett was released the next day after the police dropped the charges. This was because the law enforcers were not wearing official uniforms at the time of the arrest and Wade said that if he had known, he wouldn’t have obstructed them.
17 William Regal
William Regal’s reason for being arrested has to be one of the most embarrassing on our list. In 1997, William boarded a plane for Alaska. During the flight, he got so drunk that he urinated on a flight attendant. He later woke up in an Alaskan jail. When asked why he did so, he said that he had no recollection of urinating on an airline hostess. If you want to read more on this, get his book – Walking a Golden Mile. In it he explores the multiple drug and alcohol issues as well as a serious heart defect he struggled with in his career.
16 Ted DiBiase Jr.
On 15 February 2008, Ted DiBiase Jr. was arrested for driving under the influence in South Tampa, Florida. The police then took him into custody at 4:30 in the morning. He was booked at Orient Road Jail at 5:44 am where he stayed until 4:53 pm when he was released on a $500 bond. DiBiase Jr. is a third generation professional wrestler. His grandfather is ‘Iron’ Mike DiBiase and his father is the Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase Sr. DiBiase Jr. left WWE in 2013 due to personal issues as well as to pursue other business pursuits.
15 Jack Swagger
Jack Swagger (Jacob Hager) was arrested in 2013 in Mississippi for speeding, driving under the influence and possession of marijuana. At the time, he was leaving a SmackDown! show. The police spotted him driving over the speed limit and pulled him over. After determining that he was intoxicated, the police searched his can and found him in possession of weed. Swagger was later released on his own recognizance. The one-time WWE World Heavyweight Champion has since been occupying WWE's mid-card.
Lita was arrested for speeding and driving with a suspended license on December 9, 2011. She was then booked in a jail in Columbia County, Georgia where she spent the night and was reportedly released the next day on a $2,200 bond. This natural brunette clinched the WWF/E Women's Championship four times before leaving WWE in 2006. She is an animal lover and owner of the Amy Dumas Operation Rescue and Education. Lita was also inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2014.
13 Shawn Michaels
The Heartbreak Kid was arrested in Louisville, Kentucky and taken to the Jefferson County Jail Sheriff's Office. The cause of arrest is widely believed to have been a police assault, however the date is unclear. Mr. WrestleMania holds three WWF Championship titles and five World Tag Team Championship titles. He also has a Slammy for Double-Cross of the Year and Master of Mat Mechanics. Michaels was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2011 and has made various appearances at WWE events since.
12 Jerry Lawler
In 1993, Jerry Lawler had his first embarrassing run-in with the law. A 15-year-old girl pressed charges against The King for allegedly raping and sodomizing her, but the charges were dropped after the girl admitted that her story was not true. Six years later, a police officer gave Lawler a ticket at the Memphis International Airport. Angered, Jerry proceeded to tear the ticket apart. He then ran over the foot of said law enforcer, leading to another arrest.
11 Mark Henry
Mark Henry has been billed as the strongest man in the world. However, an incident happened in Ireland in 2010 that confirmed that even strong people are capable of doing foolish things. James McClay was trying to get signatures for his son’s birthday card and collectors book when all of a sudden Mark Henry threw a drink at him as he walked away. Mark then got up and said, “Where I'm from, you do something when someone throws a drink around you.” He also proceeded to insult James. Police were called in and Mark was arrested.
X-Pac was arrested in 2011 for possession of Hyrdocodone and drug paraphernalia. He was then arraigned at the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office where he was charged with one count of possession of drug paraphernalia and two counts of possession of a controlled substance. He was later released on a $2,150.00 bond. X-Pac is best known for clinching the WWF Tag Team Championship title four times. He is currently working in WWE’s Legends program and made an appearance at WrestleMania 30 alongside former members of DX.
9 The Big Show
In December 1998, Paul Donald Wight was arrested for exposing himself to a female motel attendant. At the time, he was part of WCW under the name ‘The Giant’. Wight denied the charges and was released later for lack of sufficient evidence. Big Show has clinched the WWF Hardcore Championship title three times and the World Heavyweight Championship two times. He has been married twice, has three kids and remains an active participant on WWE's main roster.
8 Tammy Lynn Sytch
Former WWE Diva Tamara Lynn Sytch, also known as Sunny, has had a history of drug and substance abuse. In 2012, she was arrested thrice over a period of three successive days for domestic violence and violating a restraining order. The next month, she was arrested twice for violating the restraining order yet again. Embarrassingly, she was passed out in her last arrest. She enrolled at rehab to shorten her time in jail, but a year later she was arrested again for violating a protective order.
7 Chris Jericho
Chris Jericho was arrested in 2010 for public intoxication. He had been drinking with his fellow wrestler Greg (Hurricane) Helms. Police noticed that both of them were extremely drunk at a gas station in Kentucky. In a taxi, they became violent towards two passengers with whom they were riding. They were arrested and charged with alcohol intoxication in a public place and were released on a $120 bond each. A small price to pay for one of WWE's most successful superstars and one who has gone on to have a successful music career with his band Fozzy.
6 Eddie Guerrero
On November 9, 2001, Eddie Guerrero was arrested for drunk driving. He pleaded no contest. His WWF/WWE character was that of an ingenious wrestler with the catchphrase - I Lie! I Cheat! I Steal! and his substance abuse problems ended up being written into his WWE storylines. This young, upbeat wrestler was popularly known as Latino Heat. Sadly, Geurrero was found dead on November 13, 2005 in his motel room. He was pronounced dead at the hospital due to acute heart failure.
5 Booker T
Booker T worked for Wendy's restaurants before becoming a wrestler at WCW. At the time, he had the stupid idea of committing a series of armed robberies at the restaurants. He was arrested and arraigned in court where he was slapped with a five-year jail sentence. Fortunately, for him, he served 19 months and was put on parole. He then went on to become the most decorated wrestler in WCW history winning WCW titles a record 23 times. Today Booker T is one of pro wrestling's biggest success stories and he currently serves as an announcer on Monday Night Raw.
Baby Bull was arrested due to a skit gone bad. While in Kuwait awaiting an interview, the show’s producer requested him to stand up and act scary when the interviewer asked him if wrestling was fake. The producer affirmed that the stunt was arranged because the interviewer was his friend. When the time came, Vader did his part, but this scared the interviewer to the point where police were called to the set and took Vader into custody. Looks like the producer was in dire need of increasing his show’s rating.
3 Scott Hall
Scott Hall has had many embarrassing arrests over the years. In 1983, he was charged with second-degree murder after shooting and killing a man with his own gun. In the years to come, he would be arrested for damaging a limousine and groping a 56-year-old woman outside a Baton Rouge hotel. Hall would also be arrested in 2010 for disorderly conduct and resisting a police officer. In 2012, he was arrested for a domestic disturbance with his girlfriend. His drug abuse problem contributed to his divorce from Dana. Fortunately, there's a happy ending to Hall's story. He was taken in by Diamond Dallas Page, who helped him clean up and put his life back together.
2 Jeff Hardy
Jeff Hardy was arrested in 2009 on drug trafficking charges. Police discovered 262 Vicodin pills, 180 Soma pills, 555 millilitres of anabolic steroids, a residual amount of powdered cocaine and drug-related items at his home in North Carolina. He was charged with a misdemeanor for ownership of drug paraphernalia and a felony for trafficking opium. He was also charged with a felony for keeping a house to maintain a controlled substance. He was slapped with $125,000 bail and went on to spend 10 days in jail. Hardy continues to wrestle on the independent circuit.
1 Ric Flair
In 1996, The Nature Boy did a dim-witted thing. He gave his car keys to a 20-year-old girl who was intoxicated beyond the legal limit. Flair was arrested and charged with giving a minor alcohol. In November 2005, Ric was arrested again. This time on assault, battery and damage to personal property charges. He had an altercation with another motorist whom he choked and Flair proceeded to kick the motorist's SUV. In 2011 a warrant was put out for Flair's arrest for violating the terms of a settlement he agreed to with Highspots Inc. Flair risked facing 90 days in jail, but an unknown person reportedly stepped in and paid Flair's debts.
