One aspect that has undergone a dramatic change over the years is the life of a pro wrestler away from the ring. During the 80s, wrestlers lived the lives of rock stars outside of the ring, and it was really all about putting on a show and having a drink with all of the guys after an event. This mentality carried over during the 90s. Eventually though, the party lifestyle began to subside. Today, only a select few are still regarded as party animals, as the newcomers are more focused on eating properly, training and arriving to their next destination ready to work. The WWE has transformed its product into one that only supports professionalism in the work place. Back in the day, it was more of a frat house, as opposed to a professional work environment.
This article will take a look at some of the biggest party animals in all of pro wrestling behind the scenes. This list includes wrestlers from the 80s, 90s and today. Enjoy.
For Batista, a perk that came with being a pro wrestler was the opportunity to live it up, in and out of the ring. The former WWE Champion admitted to loving the spotlight. Over the course of his career, Batista became quite the party animal. He also admitted to developing a sex addiction during his time on the road as a WWE superstar. Certainly doesn’t help when you have the biggest party animal of them all as your mentor, the Nature Boy Ric Flair.
Batista has also partied with numerous celebs, including the Wu-Tang Clan. According to rumours, Dave and WWE star Mark Henry got to party with the group on their private bus.
14 Chris Jericho
Living the life of a wrestler/musician, it’s no secret that Jericho loves to have fun. Chris has so many road stories of him and other wrestlers partying way too much. One actually includes the bosses son, Shane McMahon. Jericho has also partied hard with WWE mega star John Cena, and the two apparently got so hammered one night that John literally needed to tuck Jericho into bed.
Not all of Jericho’s party antics ended so peacefully however. Chris and former WWE star Gregory Helms were arrested in 2010 for public intoxication. Chris was also seen out several times with former WWE Diva Kelly Kelly, and this was rather controversial considering the lead Fozzy singer is married to his wife Jessica Lockhart.
13 Jeff Hardy
Many believe that if it wasn’t for Jeff’s bad habits outside of the ring, he’d be one of the biggest names in the wrestling business. Like other WWE stars, Hardy enjoyed the party lifestyle that came with being a WWE superstar. This however, got him into some serious trouble on many different occasions. One time, Hardy was pretty intoxicated getting on a flight following a show, security actually got on the plane and told Hardy he needed to get off the aircraft. Jeff admitted to being a lot worse than that on several occasions, as he and some other wrestlers enjoyed having a drink with one another prior to going on a flight. After his release, things began to spiral, and Hardy was partying way too much. In one video where Jeff’s shooting on CM Punk he’s clearly in another dimension. He was later caught for possession and arrested. Following this situation Hardy got cleaned up and is know still sober.
12 The Bella Twins
The Bellas are quite the party animals (rumor has it that they were heavily intoxicated and nude in a Jacuzzi just months after their WWE call up). If you watch the hit realty series Total Divas, you can see these twins love to have a good time away from the ring. Brie in particular goes under her alias of “Brie Mode” when things start getting seriously wild. Brie and Daniel actually initially hooked up after a night of drinking, not to mention Sheamus walked into the room just before it was about to go down. The twins have settled down recently. With Nikki as the former champion and Brie thinking about starting a family, it looks like “Brie Mode” will finally be laid to rest.
11 Andre the Giant
You know this guy was a party animal after he set a record for most beers drank in one sitting. Getting intoxicated didn’t come cheap for Andre, as he needed to consume ridiculous amounts of alcohol in order to feel a buzz. He once consumed 156 beers in one sitting, a record that will never be broken. Andre’s nights out also included 2 liters of vodka, 32 bottles of wine, 10 bottles of Jack Daniel and endless amounts of mini-liquor bottles on different occasions.
10 The Fabulous Freebirds
The 80s were a wild era for pro wrestlers. Outside of the ring it was like they were rock stars partying it up after every show, and this carried on until the mid 90s. The Freebirds were the pioneers of this lifestyle. They would party it up after every show, it was like they were literally a rock band. In 1993, Terry Gordy received quite the scare after he suffered a stroke, and some believe his hard going lifestyle contributed to this. In 2001, Gordy passed away. The Freebirds are set to get indicted into this year’s Hall of Fame class.
9 Brian Pillman
Brian Pillman was as wild on camera as he was off of it. Brian was an absolute party animal outside of the ring, and according to stories, Pillman could have out drank anyone at the time, as he was apparently always ready to go following shows. Sadly, Pillman’s life came to a shocking end at the age of 35. Some believe his party animal lifestyle caught up to him over time. Pillman was found dead in his hotel room after suffering from a heart attack.
Just imagine if you were the only girl surrounded by larger than life men all jacked up on testosterone; well, this is what Sunny had to go through during the majority of her time with the WWE. As you might expect, wrestlers liked having her around after every show. According to rumors, Sunny spent some time partying with the likes of 'The Kliq'. Some claim Sunny hooked up with Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart on different occasions. She is still today known to be quite the drinker, and this has gotten her into some trouble as of late, unfortunately picking up a couple of DUIs.
7 The Sandman
Some people believe that The Sandman actually wrestled more than half of his matches while he was under the influence. Could this be true? Well, just judging by this guy's entrance, I can't say I wouldn’t be surprised. Similar to Stone Cold Steve Austin, Sandman enjoys drinking a nice cold beer in and out of the ring. As you might have concluded, he was known to be quite the party animal during his days with ECW.
6 Jake Roberts
As we discussed early in this article, the 80s were a wild era for pro wrestlers out of the ring. Jake Roberts was another wrestler who enjoyed the party lifestyle. Things however, would later get out of hand, as some rumours began to surface regarding Roberts actually showing up to live events under the influence. Things continued to spiral badly in the next couple of years, and Roberts was eventually just waiting for death to come. As you probably know by now, former WCW and WWE star DDP ultimately saved the life of Roberts, getting him cleaned up in more ways than one.
5 Hulk Hogan
The Hulkster was a pioneer, being the first pro wrestler to party with celebrities. Hulk Hogan was the first ever wrestler to hit the mainstream media. To Hulk’s credit, he managed to stay focused despite having so many celebrity friends throughout the years. Following his divorce, Hulk turned to partying as an escape, and this eventually lead him to drinking on his own, contemplating if he should end his life. Thankfully for Hogan, the irrational thoughts went away before it was too late.
4 Shawn Michaels
Former wrestlers said it best: he was the Heart Break Kid in and out of the ring. This fact, however, rubbed a lot of his peers the wrong way, as Michaels was reportedly as arrogant in the ring as he was out of it, even with some of his co-workers. Michaels generally hung around with his 'Kliq'. The group of wrestlers loved to party after shows, where Triple H was usually the designated driver. Kliq member Scott Hall, recalls a time where Michaels and Hall were on a heavy amount of drugs in their hotel room. Hall even remembers asking Shawn if they were still breathing. Following his departure from the company, Shawn got himself cleaned up from head to toe. He later became a Born again Christian.
Like the rest of his 'Kliq' mates, Waltman was a crazy party animal. He was also usually the mastermind behind several masterful pranks (which included cutting off Michael Hayes’ ponytail during the plane ride from hell and urinating in Sable’s bag just minutes before his match). Along the way unfortunately, Sean’s partying turned into a drug and alcohol addiction. Luckily, Kevin Nash, Triple H and Vince McMahon all intervened helping Waltman get some treatment. He is doing much better today.
2 Scott Hall
Hall’s heavy partying began in the early 90s, and it later escalated with 'The Kliq'. Hall was out partying it up literally every other day during the 90s, and things got a lot worse in the 2000s when charges of public intoxication started coming out. Hall was also rushed to the hospital several times. His peers are shocked that he is actually still alive today. In 2013, DDP intervened and helped in getting Hall cleaned up once and for all. Rumors also indicate that Hall may be hired for a full time role as a trainer with NXT. Wouldn’t that be something!
1 Ric Flair
There is no wrestler that embodies the words "party animal" more so than the Nature Boy himself. This guy truly was the “The Stylin', profilin', limousine riding, jet flying, kiss-stealing, wheelin' n' dealin' son of a gun!” in and out of the ring. Put it this way, with his first real paycheck the guy bought himself a brand new Rolls-Royce. Flair would also buy himself a new suit for every show and customize his robes constantly. On the Stone Cold Podcast, Flair discussed what it was like to be the Nature Boy outside of the ring. Flair talked about making announcements in hotel lobbies that there was a party in his room, where women would come in flocks every night in amazement and awe of The Nature Boy. Other stories include Flair dropping his pants in front of a stewardess on the infamous “Plane ride from hell” and attending a WWE promo campaign intoxicated.
Flair stands alone as the biggest party animal in pro wrestling history.
