Lionel Messi spends $19.6 million to settle tax evasion case

Lionel Messi has agreed to spend $19,552,500 to settle his tax evasion case filed by the Spanish authorities.

The Argentinean and his father Jorge Horacio was charged of escaping $5.2 million of taxes from 2007 to 2009.

Last week, it was reported that Messi also paid an additional $13,035,000 payment to cover his image rights for 2010 and 2011. It is estimated that for 2012 until June 2013, he is expected to pay roughly $39,105,000.

They were summoned to appear in court on September 17 and were threatened with spending six years in prison for failure to comply with the requirements. With the reported settlement, Messi can now get back and focus on his career to prepare for the upcoming season.

The $115 million worth FC Barcelona striker has a total earning of $41.3 million – $20 million from his salary/winnings and $21.3 million from endorsements.

Named as FIFA’s World Best Player, 26-year-old Messi has just signed a contract extension with FC Barcelona until 2018. The club also promised him an increase in salary.
