Top 10 Most Google-Searched Hockey Players Of Last Season

Towards the end of the 2013-2014 regular season, Google came out with its list of most searched hockey players. As you will see, new young and exciting next generation players are beginning to dominate what fans look at and search for online. Though, not to worry for fans of the old school hockey, a 42 year old player does manage to crack a spot on this list! Notable players missing from this list include the magic man Pavel Datsyuk, who ranks in 17th on the list and surprisingly, Alex Ovechkin who finished 20th on Google’s list of most searched hockey players. The biggest surprise entry on the top 20 list goes to Mike Fisher, ranking 13th amongst his fellow peers (it's probably safe to say that we could add a big assist to his country-singer wife, Carrie Underwood for that 13th place finish). The most searched NHL player ranks 31st overall, in terms of popularity. As you can see, NHL superstars are not the American public’s first choice. Despite the overall popularity, let us now find out which players ranked in the top 10 for most searched on Google for this past season.

10 Jarome Iginla

Greg M. Cooper-USA TODAY Sports

The 37 year old sniper is still relevant amongst the population of searchers. Jarome signing with the Bruins’ in the off season certainly added a big amount of traffic to his name, whenever you go from a Penguin jersey to a Bruins jersey, you will surely create some attention around you. Boston Bruin players are amongst the most popular franchises searched on Google daily, this fact adds to the massive amount of searches for Iginla last season. The Bruins have 5 players in the top 20, and the popularity of the last couple of seasons has increased dramatically; Iginla’s high ranking amongst his peers is a perfect example of this.

9 Zdeno Chara

Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports

The captain of the Bruins defines what the Bruins are all about, an 'in-your-face', hard hitting big team that can not only intimidate you physically, but also intimidate you on the score board. Chara has been the pillar of Boston’s success in the recent years; he’s also not hard to miss on the ice listed at 6’9, 255 pounds. Chara enjoyed another terrific season, finishing runner-up to Duncan Keith for the best defensemen in the league. The Bruins captain is the second most searched player on the team.

8 Henrik Lundqvist

Adam Hunger-USA TODAY Sports

When you think of the New York Rangers, there is no other player aside from their goaltender that quickly comes to mind, after-all, he is the king. Remarkably, the king is the only Ranger player to make the top 20 list, as well as one of only 2 goalies to make the top 10 list. Additionally, Henrik is the only goalie to be listed in the top 10 in jersey sales. The king is arguably the most popular and recognizable goaltender in the entire NHL, his post season performance undoubtedly aided his cause immensely, and added a couple of extra notches to his popularity. Another underrated factor is the king's look, always perfectly groomed, wearing a perfectly fitted suit, time and time again. The guy dresses like an absolute pro and looks like one as well, this surely may have aided his number 8 spot on this list.

7 Tyler Seguin

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

One of the young guns makes the top 10 list of most searched players, and what a future this kid has got. The buzz over Tyler began in the off season of the 2013-2014 season, when he was dealt in a blockbuster trade to the Dallas Stars. Seguin generated some huge buzz with this deal, but generated even more buzz with his play as a Dallas Star. The 22 year old lead his team back into the post season, despite an early exit in the playoffs. Tyler had a terrific regular season, finishing 4th in league points with 84. Expect the buzz over this kid to not only continue, but to actually increase in the following years to come.

6 Tuukka Rask

5 Jaromir Jagr

Kevin Hoffman-USA TODAY Sports

Truly a privilege to still be watching this guy play, and what adds to the awesomeness is that the young generation are still searching for the 42 year old. Jaromir Jagr had a tremendous first year with the Devils, leading the team in assists, plus minus and points, not too bad for a 42 year old. Even more remarkable, Jagr took part in all 82 games this past season, he and three other teammates were the only ones to accomplish this. What's more, the guy is apparently just as entertaining on the ice as he is off the ice. We could only hope to see at least another two years of this guy.

4 Jonathan Toews

Dennis Wierzbicki-USA TODAY Sports

A star on the rise, Jonathan Toews talk blew up this past season, when the young superstar lead Canada to a gold medal in the Olympics. Toews is arguably regarded as the best captain in the entire league today. Toews created some massive buzz this off season as well, signing a colossal extension with his fellow teammate Patrick Kane, worth $84 million, in exchange for an 8 year term. Additionally, Toews ranks 3rd in the department of most sold player jerseys in the entire league, being the face of a popular American franchise is certainly a huge reason for Jonathan’s popularity. The Blackhawks remain one of the most popular and searched-for teams in the entire league, in the last five years.

3 T.J. Oshie

Tom Szczerbowski-USA TODAY Sports

The future is certainly bright for the American forward, but in this instance, you can thank the Olympics for the massive buzz that T.J. Oshie created against the Russian team. Oshie instantly became an internet sensation, following his brilliance in the shootouts against the host nation Russians. The buzz about the young superstar began to soar, increasing jersey sales by nearly double, as well as getting opportunities to star in national commercials for companies such as Enterprise. Even more remarkable is the jersey he wore, which sold for $23, 000 at an auction. Truly crazy to think what one game did to the popularity of this young American star.

2 Patrick Kane

Dennis Wierzbicki-USA TODAY Sports

It’s safe to say that you’re pretty popular when you’re shooting commercials for McDonald’s with NBA superstar, LeBron James. Patrick Kane’s talk seems to only be growing every season, with the Blackhawks star now becoming the face of American hockey. Dazzling with puck skills and silky moves every night, Kane has made hockey cool for millions of Americans, even his twitter account has sky rocketed to more than half a million followers. Fun Fact: Kane currently ranks 69th amongst the most searched athletes.

1 Sidney Crosby

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Unsurprisingly, the face of the NHL, Sid Crosby ranks as the most searched hockey player in the entire league. Crosby ranks in at number 31 overall amongst all athletes. Sidney blew away all other NHL players by nearly doubling the amount of traffic on his name to the second most searched player, Pat Kane. Crosby’s star power rocketed to number one by far, and it will certainly be interesting to see if any player can rival his popularity in the next upcoming years.
