Top 10 Drunkest Fan Bases in the NFL

The National Football League and tailgating: They go together like peanut butter and jelly, pumpkin pie and Thanksgiving, and the Cleveland Browns and losing. One company went out of the way in 2015 to prove that paying NFL fans enjoy alcoholic beverages. BACtrack performed a study during the first six weeks of the 2015 NFL regular season to see just how much certain fan bases drink while in and around stadiums. It may not surprise you to learn that the six fan bases that were deemed to be the drunkest, per this study, associate themselves with teams that have never before won a Super Bowl.

None of the teams that are responsible for what BACtrack determined to be the top-ten drunkest NFL fans of 2015 have won a Super Bowl in recent memory. The Indianapolis Colts is the only franchise that has been to the mountaintop in the past decade. That was back when Peyton Manning was playing under center for the Colts. At the top of the list of the drunkest NFL fans of 2015 are those who cheer on a team that became known for losing Super Bowl contests in the 1990s. Those fans may already be growing tired of its head coach who talks more than he wins.

10 San Francisco 49ers: .056 Average BAC

Ed Szczepanski-USA TODAY Sports

It was only a few years ago when the San Francisco 49ers were literally only a handful of yards away from winning a Super Bowl championship. How quickly things can change in the NFL. The team's successful head coach left to accept a job at the University of Michigan. Quarterback Colin Kaepernick has been such a disaster that he has been replaced by Blaine Gabbert. One of the most storied franchises in the history of the NFL is now responsible for some of the drunkest NFL fans in the United States. Those who pay to support the 49ers deserve better than what they are receiving these days.

9 Washington Redskins: .058 Average BAC

Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports

Let us take a look at the state of the Washington Redskins over the past several years. Washington has given up on quarterback Robert Griffin III, and the club is now trusting that Kirk Cousins will be the man who can lead the team to glory. Daniel Snyder has been referred to as the “most hated owner” in all of the NFL. The nickname linked with Washington is seen by outsiders and by some Washington fans as racist. It is also worth mentioning that the Redskins have not been all that close to winning a Super Bowl in some time. No wonder Washington fans are among the drunkest in all of the NFL.

8 Indianapolis Colts: .059 Average BAC

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

Much like the San Francisco 49ers, the Indianapolis Colts seemed to be on the cusp of winning a championship not all that long ago. The Colts then did not do enough to surround quarterback Andrew Luck with enough talent to make it to a Super Bowl. Things have gotten rough for the Colts in 2015 due to Luck getting banged up during games. As good as Luck may be, he can only do so much to try to defeat the likes of the Denver Broncos or New England Patriots. Those who follow the Colts have plenty of reasons to be among the drunkest NFL fans for 2015.

7 Miami Dolphins: .061 Average BAC

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Those who pay to watch the Miami Dolphins in person may not be in the top-ten of the drunkest NFL fans for 2016. It took some time, but the Dolphins (finally) fired head coach Joe Philbin. Ryan Tannehill has showed some promise that he may prove himself to be more than just an average quarterback who cannot win a big game under the bright lights. Miami still has a long journey to complete before the club can overtake the New England Patriots in the division standings. Fans of the Dolphins are hoping that they will soon be drinking alcohol in celebration.

6 San Diego Chargers: .062 Average BAC

Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

Maybe fans of the San Diego Chargers are among the drunkest in all of the NFL for 2015 because they are having so much fun. They do, after all, get to live in one of the more beautiful regions in all of the United States. The Chargers are, more often than not, in the playoff hunt throughout the majority of regular seasons. Sure, the Chargers are probably not winning a Super Bowl this year or anytime soon. Quarterback Philip Rivers is now entering the twilight of his NFL career. It is still somewhat difficult to feel all that sorry for San Diego fans when you examine the other fan bases mentioned in this piece.

5 Arizona Cardinals: .062 Average BAC

Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

Depending on how the Arizona Cardinals faithful enjoy celebrating certain events, they may be even higher on next year's list of the drunkest NFL fans. The Cardinals are regarded as one of the best teams in the NFL as of the first full weekend of November 2015. Arizona's defense has the goods to win a championship. Carson Palmer is attempting to win a Super Bowl before he has to hang up his cleats for good. Keep on drinking (responsibly), Arizona fans. Even better times could be in your near future if your favorite team continues to be one of the best in all of the NFC.

4 Cleveland Browns: .064 Average BAC

Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

It is almost hard to believe that followers of the Cleveland Browns are not atop a list of the drunkest NFL fans in all the land. The Browns have not had a winning season since 2007. Cleveland has played a single playoff game since returning to the NFL in 1999. The only hope that the Browns have as of the posting of this piece is that Johnny Manziel will be able to evolve into a franchise quarterback who can turn the team into a winner. Drink up, Cleveland fans. The Browns have given you a plethora of reasons to hit the bottle over the past two decades. At lease you guys have the Cleveland Cavaliers.

3 Philadelphia Eagles: .069 Average BAC

John Geliebter-USA TODAY Sports

There are probably some Philadelphia Eagles fans out there wondering if Chip Kelly is (allegedly) among the drunkest head coaches in the NFL. Kelly is either going to show himself to be the smartest man in the room among NFL personnel, or he is going to be back working in the college game sooner rather than later. One has to give Kelly credit for thinking outside of the box and for being willing to take risks. Those risks are going to make him an unpopular figure in Philadelphia if the Eagles do not go on to be the best team in the NFC East and a championship contender.

2 Detroit Lions: .069 Average BAC

Steve Flynn-USA TODAY Sports

Of course those who pay to see the Detroit Lions in person would be among the drunkest NFL fans for 2015. The Lions have been a disaster since the start of the current campaign. Men who began the fall as the general manger and president of the Lions have been shown the door by the club. Quarterback Matthew Stafford could find himself playing for a new team as quickly as 2016. The Lions may “earn” the top pick in next year's NFL Draft. There is one thing that fans of the Detroit Lions can hold onto as the fall turns into winter: Things probably cannot get worse for their favorite NFL team.

1 Buffalo Bills: .076 Average BAC

Kevin Hoffman-USA TODAY Sports

Who in western New York state could have imagined at the time that the “Boy I Love Losing Super Bowls” era of the Buffalo Bills would be the best that fan base would see? Every professional sports franchises goes through losing periods. It happens. Fans of the Bills have to be wondering when it will be their time to celebrate a title. Head coach Rex Ryan, who is never shy about speaking his mind to the press, will quickly wear out his welcome if he is not able to guide the Bills to the playoffs. It is not all bad news for Buffalo fans, though, as they now know that the Bills will be staying put where the franchise belongs for the foreseeable future. Cheers to you, Buffalo fans. You've earned another drink.
