Cristiano Ronaldo becomes the best paid soccer player in the history of the sport after agreeing to a new contract where he will be earning £403,000 weekly (approximately $545,700) . The contract was sealed when Ronaldo signed the five year contract tying him to his Spanish club, Real Madrid. The Portugal international will earn an annual basic salary of £21 million net (approximately $28,438,200). On top of this he will also earn performance related bonuses and receive substantial image rights payments.
The figures being mentioned are double the wage that Ronaldo had agreed upon when joining Madrid back in 2009. His agent was able to negotiate such a deal because of 2 main reasons. First, he was able to calculate that Ronaldo could achieve a signing on fee that was between the astronomical amounts of £50 and £70 million ( $70 million- $95 million) if he had chosen to part with the club and leave as a free agent. Second, the club president could not imagine losing a player who had scored as many goals as he had club appearances and was the club's most prized asset.
