Just three weeks after going first overall to the Detroit Tigers in the 2020 MLB draft, Spencer Torkelson received a nice payday from his new team.

According to Jim Callis of MLB.com, Torkelson received a $8,416,300 bonus from the Tigers. It's the richest signing bonus in Major League history, surpassing the $8.1 million that the Baltimore Orioles gave Adley Rutschman - the top pick in the 2019 draft - just ay ear ago.

Torkelson is also just the third player to receive a signing bonus of at least $8 million. Aside from Torkelson and Rutschman, superstar pitcher Gerrit Cole earned an $8 million bonus when he signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2011.  The three-time All-Star was the first overall pick that year.

The 20-year-old Torkelson went first overall to a rebuilding Tigers team that finished with the worst record in the Majors last year at 47-114.

Detroit was among the top teams in the American League from 2011 to 2014, winning four straight AL Central Division titles while reaching the ALCS three straight times (2011 to '13). They also reached the World Series in 2012, but were swept by the dynastic San Francisco Giants.

The Tigers began a rebuilding phase in 2017, trading away Cy Young winner and future Hall of Fame pitcher Justin Verlander and All-Star slugger J.D. Martinez. In 2017 and 2018, the Tigers recorded 64-98 records, finishing fifth and third in the division, respectively.

In three seasons for Arizona State in the NCAA, Torkelson batted .337 with 54 home runs, 130 RBI and a 1.192 OPS.

But the Tigers have quickly assembled one of the best farm systems in baseball. Torkelson joins a prospect pool that also includes pitcher Casey Mize (the No. 1 selection from the 2018 draft), another pitcher in Matt Manning plus outfielders Daz Cameron (son of former MLB star Mike Cameron) and Riley Greene. They're still a few years away from contending, but the future is looking very promising in Detroit.
