Patrick Mahomes has made a strong case as the best player in the NFL, and it sounds like the Kansas City Chiefs are preparing to pay him like it.

The Chiefs picked up the fifth-year option on Mahomes' contract this offseason, keeping him signed through the 2021 season. But when it comes to signing a new deal, expect the extension to be a record breaker.

According to a report from Dan Graziano of ESPN.com, the expectation among "most in the industry" is that Mahomes' next contract will "shatter records".

It would be a major surprise if Mahomes didn't end up signing a record deal with the Chiefs. At only 24 years of age, he already has an MVP award plus a Super Bowl ring and Super Bowl MVP on his resume. Mahomes has accomplished all of that in only two seasons as a starter.

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan holds the record for the richest NFL contract ever. In the 2018 offseason, the 2016 league MVP and perennial Pro Bowler signed a five-year deal worth $150 million.

According to Spotrac.com, there are nine different NFL quarterbacks who are currently under $100 million-plus deals: Ryan, Russell Wilson ($140 million), Jimmy Garoppolo ($137.5 million), Matthew Stafford ($135 million), Aaron Rodgers ($134 million), Jared Goff ($134 million), Carson Wentz ($128 million), Derek Carr ($125 million) and Ryan Tannehil ($118 million).

The market for quarterbacks has jumped up immensely each year, with even non-superstar quarterbacks receiving over $20 million annually on their deals. Given Mahomes' age, accomplishments and world-class talents, it's safe to say that he'll surpass Ryan's $150 million contract. The Chiefs have every incentive to make him the highest-paid player in football.

Mahomes led the Chiefs to a Super Bowl LIV victory over the San Francisco 49ers, helping the team end a 50-year championship drought. Kansas City is scheduled to open up its season against the Houston Texans in the Thursday Kickoff Game on Sept. 10.
