Minnesota Wild general manager Bill Guerin has made his first marquee move in what should be a very busy offseason.

According to Michael Russo of The Athletic, the Wild have signed defenseman Jonas Brodin to a giant seven-year contract extension worth $42 million.

Brodin was entering the final season of a six-year, $25 million deal he signed with the Wild in Oct. 2014. He would have been eligible to enter free agency after the 2020-21 season, but the 27-year-old has decided to remain in the State of Hockey.

The Wild drafted Brodin 10th overall in 2011, and he has morphed into one of the league's top defensive blueliners. He has 30 goals and 146 points in 555 career NHL games.

Brodin has been a key part of a Minnesota team that made the playoffs six straight years from 2013 to 2018. They reached the qualifying round of this year's postseason, falling to the Vancouver Canucks in four games.

Brodin's $42 million is tied with Erik Johnson (Colorado Avalanche) and Johnny Boychuk (New York Islanders) for the 27th richest among active NHL defensemen. Montreal Canadiens captain Shea Weber carries the largest contract (14 years, $110 million).

The Wild now have Brodin, Jared Spurgeon, Matt Dumba and Ryan Suter all signed to lucrative long-term deals. Many believe that Guerin will look to trade at least one of his blueliners in order to land some much-needed scoring up front.

Dumba has often been mentioned in trade rumors, but given his value to the Wild, it's going to cost a team a hefty price to land him. That's if Guerin is looking to trade him, of course.

The Wild will have the ninth overall pick at the 2020 NHL Draft, so Guerin will have the prime opportunity to land an impact player there. Re-signing Brodin was one order of business, but now he must address the offense and goaltending situation.
