The Montreal Canadiens announced Friday that they have signed veteran defenseman Jeff Petry to a four-year contract extension.
According to Pierre LeBrun of TSN and The Athletic, the contract is worth $25 million. It includes an $8 million signing bonus, a 15-team no-trade clause and a full no-movement clause, per LeBrun.
Petry, who's entering the final season of a six-year, $33 million contract he signed back in 2015, will make $5 million in salary for the 2021-22 season, per LeBrun. The following three years will include the signing bonus money.
Petry's contract extension comes a week after the Habs signed veteran blueliner Joel Edmundson to a four-year, $14 million contract. Those two -along with All-Star and captain Shea Weber - are all under long-term deals, thus ensuring that the defence is accounted for over the long run.
The 32-year-old Petry has been one of Montreal's best players since he arrived via trade with the Edmonton Oilers in the midst of the 2014-15 season. He guided them to playoff berths in 2015, 2017 and 2020.

He has recorded double-digit goals and 40-plus points in each of the last three seasons. In 2018-19, he posted career-highs in both goals (13) and points (46). He had 11 goals and 40 points in 71 games during the 2019-20 regular season before it went on pause due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
In 680 career games, Petry has 69 goals and 253 points. He has averaged 22:12 time on ice per game throughout his career.
The Canadiens qualified for the 24-team postseason format, and they upset the heavily favored Pittsburgh Penguins in the best-of-five qualifying round. Petry scored the overtime winner in Game 1, and the Canadiens took control of the series from there.
Petry had two goals and one assist in Montreal's 10 playoff games. They were ultimately defeated by the top seeded Philadelphia Flyers in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal. We'll see if Petry and the Habs can take it a step further next year.
