New Yorks Jets Pro Bowl safety Jamal Adams reportedly requested a trade this week, with the two sides unable to gain much traction on a contract extension.

Although the Jets don't have any intentions of trading Adams at this time, the 24-year-old is interested in joining seven different teams, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter: The Baltimore Ravens, Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs, Philadelphia 49ers, San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks.

According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, a source from a team who's looking at Adams believes he wants a new deal worth over $20 million annually. This would easily make him the highest-paid safety in the NFL.

According to Spotrac.com, there are seven defensive players in the NFL who carry cap hits of over $20 million: Khalil Mack (Chicago Bears), Von Miller (Denver Broncos), Aaron Donald (Los Angeles Rams), Fletcher Cox (Philadelphia Eagles), DeForest Buckner (Indianapolis Colts), DeMarcus Lawrence (Dallas Cowboys) and Chandler Jones (Arizona Cardinals).

Bears star Eddie Jackson - who signed a four-year, $58 million extension in January - is the highest-paid safety in the NFL at $14.6 million per season.

Adams has certainly made a strong case to earn close to $20 million annually. He's only 24 years of age, and Adams is arguably the best defensive back in football right now. He's earned consecutive Pro Bowl selections, and Adams was named a Second-Team All-Pro and a First-Team All-Pro in 2018 and 2019, respectively.

The Jets picked up the fifth-year option on Adams' rookie contract, so he's signed through the 2021 season. Even if the Jets refuse to trade Adams, he still has the option to hold out in order to try and orchestrate a trade.

The best bet for the Jets would be to just pay Adams what he's worth, because you don't replace elite safeties of his caliber that easily. Only time will tell how things play out from here, but time is on the Jets' side, with the regular season still almost three months away.
