Anthony Davis and LeBron James have guided the Los Angeles Lakers to the top record in the Western Conference, but he's not ready to commit long-term to his new team just yet.

On Tuesday, Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports reported that Davis turned down a four-year max extension offer for a whopping $146 million. Instead, the 26-year-old plans to test free agency in the offseason.

As Haynes noted, Davis has a 2020-21 $28.7 player option, but the belief is that he's going to decline it. With that, the six-time All-Star will be a free agent for the first time in his career.

Davis requested a trade from the New Orleans Pelicans last season, but a deal wasn't reached until the end of the 2018-19 campaign.

Finally, the front office gave into his wishes and sent Davis to the Lakers, receiving Josh Hart, Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball and a trio of first-round picks in return. The Pelicans received a handful of franchise building blocks to build around No. 1 overall selection, Zion Williamson.

It was reported for a long period that the Lakers were Davis' preferred destination after he requested a trade from New Orleans. He received his wish in the offseason, but the front office clearly has a lot of work to do in securing his long-term services this summer.

Haynes noted that Davis can sign a maximum five-year contract with a value of $202 million in the offseason. His intentions may very well be to stick around with the Lakers, but by turning down the extension now, Davis can secure himself a more lucrative deal this summer.

Entering play on Tuesday night, the Lakers held the top record in the Western Conference at 29-7. They're among the favorites to win the 2020 NBA Championship, and that should be the club's focus for now. After all, winning a title would go a long way in convincing Davis to re-sign.
