15. Rihanna

To say Rihanna is stunning, energetic, and highly popular is an understatement. She graced several magazine covers this year and was the topic on many an Internet chat forum. Rihanna earned her sixth No. 1 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart with her hit single "Needed Me" and another No. 1 with "Work" featuring none other than Drake.

But it was her on-again-off-again relationship with hip hop star Drake that really got the world talking. Drake presented Rihanna with the Video Vanguard award on the night of the VMA’s coupled with a sweet speech and a huge kiss. And now? Are they or aren’t they back together? Something tells us the pair are just going to keep us guessing all the way through…

14. Ryan Reynolds

Thanks to our friends at Google and all not-so-secret algorithms that track what we search for, we can now reveal that Ryan Reynolds graces our top 15 list for his role in the big screen adaption of Deadpool this year. For some this might surprise you but for others it may be just another day in the life of a Ryan Reynolds fan.

It’s been 11 years in the making and finally we got to see Ryan Reynolds star as Deadpool in a stand-alone movie. He first introduced himself to the world as the former Special Forces veteran Wade Wilson turned wise-cracking Deadpool in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Now armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humour, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life and the world sat up and took notice. Ryan became one of the most searched celebs of 2016 along with being named "Sexiest Dad Alive." Not a bad year for the actor indeed.

13. David Bowie

2016 was a year we had to bid farewell to not one but two iconic musicians with the first being David Bowie. He passed away in early January after losing his battle to cancer. David Bowie was enigmatic and intoxicatingly entertaining and kept the world entertained for years with his unique take on music and life around him.

Perhaps it would be apt to call him an overall visionary as the English singer, songwriter, and actor sure made an impact. From his humble beginnings as David Jones in Brixton where he grew up in South London to achieving global mega-stardom David Bowie was also on the world’s radar.

12. Beyoncé

Beyoncé Knowles is known to many as the multi-platinum, Grammy Award-winning artist of our generation and the better half to hip hop artist Jay Z. She first rose to fame as the lead singer of the all-girls group Destiny’s Child before moving on to a solo career. Her debut album won five Grammy Awards and sold over 11 million copies worldwide. But it wasn’t her album sales that got people talking earlier this year…

April saw Beyoncé revealing her hit single "Lemonade" amidst cheating and affairs rumours and everyone was dying to find out who the "Becky with the good hair" was and whether the couple were indeed heading for Splitsville. The couple weathered the storm and look to end 2016 together but that didn’t stop the world Googling up a storm and "Lemonade" went on to become the most Googled drink.

11. Britney Spears

Britney Spears is of course no newcomer to publicity and she may just be the queen of comebacks. She has regularly made it to the Google top hits and her latest album is gaining much success. Sure she may have had had several setbacks in the past but she always manages to pull through in the end.

It’s been said that more than any other single music artist, Britney Spears was the driving force behind the return of teen pop in the late '90s and we couldn’t agree more. Today she is a bona fide pop phenomenon and one of Google’s most searched celebrities of 2016.

10. Tyga

For some Tyga is known as a successful hip hop artist. For others he is the rapper boyfriend of teen Kylie Jenner, youngest sibling to the Kardashian clan. Regardless, the American rapper was one of the most searched celebs of 2016 and is the first to make it into the Top 10.

Tyga first came onto the scene back in 2011 when he signed a recording contract with Young Money Entertainment, Cash Money Records, and Republic Records. He went on to become a successful rapper but he has often made the news for what he’s up to outside of music rather than in it. Despite his portrayal of living life as a gangster and his host of questionable tats, the world just wanted to find out more about his split with ex-wife Blac Chyna and his current relationship with model and cosmetics spokesperson Kylie Jenner.

9. Justin Bieber

The Canadian pop star is next on the list as he has spent the last year in the headlines whilst still maintaining his position on the music charts.

Can you believe the successful star was first discovered way back when he uploaded a few videos to YouTube. His debut album, My World, went platinum in the United States, Canada, and even in the United Kingdom. He received immeasurable media exposure but perhaps more for his hairstyles, DUI record, and TMZ recorded antics than for his actual music. Nevertheless he made a comeback a la Britney Spears-style and in 2015 released "What Do You Mean?" catapulting him back into our good books and onto our search engines once again. Is it too late to ever forget about Justin Bieber?

8. Prince

This year saw another untimely death of a music icon with the passing of Prince. His death in early April sent the world and media into a spin and finally things settled when his death was ruled as an “accidental overdose.”

Celebrities from all over the globe mourned his death and celebrated his creative and incredible talent as an artist paying tribute to him across social media. Google even went on to honour the musical icon by changing its logo to commemorate his song Purple Rain. Snapchat also celebrated the star’s life and included a new filter that launched just hours after Prince’s death.

7. Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna

Just when you think there is not much else left to see regarding the Kardashian family, brother Rob makes the headlines and just about breaks the internet Kim style. He announced to the world he was dating Tyga’s ex, Blac Chyna, and if that wasn’t shocking or awkward enough she is also pregnant with his child.

E! Entertainment went on to produce a reality TV show about the new couple aptly named “Rob & Chyna.” The series gives viewers a sneak peek at what it looks like in their idea of paradise but things have been pretty rocky and controversial from the start- giving us ample material to work with when we hit Google search.

6. Kanye West

American hip hop recording artist and musical sensation Kanye West was always going to make the list. You knew it. We knew it. He knew it. How could he not after marrying Kim Kardashian, releasing yet another highly anticipated album, and throwing an outdoor fashion show where most of his models fainted from the heat.

His album The Life of Pablo also got him trending on social media and had just about everyone confused from its secretive title to its content and lyrics. His string of bizarre tweets didn’t help his cause much either, leading him to be one of the most searched celebs of the year.

5. Taylor Swift

Enter Taylor Swift, #5 in the rankings on our most searched celebrities of 2016 list and it’s easy to see why. It seems over and above her success in music, it’s her failure in relationships that keeps her name in the press. Sure we thought it was all sunshine and rainbows for Taylor Swift and her Scottish DJ boyfriend Calvin Harris back in March but their love was not to be.

Whilst the two celebrated their one-year anniversary, boasted about their island getaway, and then promptly broke up we wondered- will Taylor ever stay in a relationship? We can’t help but also wonder what she’d sing about then.

4. Johnny Depp and Amber Heard

When it comes to this dynamic pair the writing was on the wall. Allegations of affairs, binge-drinking, drug, and domestic abuse rocked the pair’s happy union and it ultimately led to their divorce.

After months of fighting and public scrutiny, Amber Heard and Johnny Depp have finally settled their divorce and the ex-wife and model-turned-actress went on to donate all of the settlement money to charity in a shocking turn of events. Heard donated her entire $7 million divorce settlement to two charities: the ACLU (with a focus on stopping violence against women) and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles putting to bed claims that she was a gold digger. Their surprising pairing may have been a tabloid magazine’s dream but the Hollywood stars were just not meant to be.

3. Kim Kardashian West

Our top 5 list would surely be incomplete without selfie queen Kim Kardashian West. The American reality TV star, socialite, businesswoman, and model did break the internet, have another child, and pose nude, and that was even before halfway through this year. Time Magazine named Kim as one of their 100 most influential people and she went on to become a pop culture phenomenon in all that she has accomplished in the last few months. As she chronicles her daily life through social media we are able to get a glimpse into the life of a Kardashian.

She recently experienced an armed robbery while in Paris for Fashion Week in which $10 million worth of jewels were stolen, thus creating a media firestorm. It’s no easy task to keep up with this Kardashian but thanks to social media and Google we can at least try.

2. Hillary Clinton

U.S. presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is undoubtedly one of the female celebrities who have been the most googled in 2016. In just a few decades she has served as secretary of state and First Lady of the United States.

She is a practicing lawyer and law professor and an activist. And now Clinton has gone one to become the first woman to ever be a presidential nominee of a major American party. The world is certainly intrigued and thus made her one of the most searched celebrities of 2016.

1. Donald Trump

So much can be said about Donald Trump. He is a businessman, television personality, and the latest nominee of the Republican Party. He's hoping to become president of the United States in the 2016 election. He has become one of the most searched celebrities of 2016 and we happen to think we know why…He has been recorded as saying some of the most controversial one-liners of the decade in his quest for presidential power and in the process given us some Google-worthy material.

In an interview with Megyn Kelly she proclaimed to him, "You've called women you don't like 'fat pigs,' 'dogs,' ‘slobs' and 'disgusting animals.'" Trump responded with "Only Rosie O'Donnell." He also went on to say that he was the worst thing to ever happen to ISIS in an interview with Barbara Walters.

Our all-time favourite Trumpism? His awkward statement about his daughter Ivanka: "Yeah, she's really something, and what a beauty, that one. If I weren't happily married and, ya know, her father …" he said. It’s for reasons like this that we believe Donald Trump will continue to be the Most Searched Celebrities of 2016 and even beyond.
