15 Real-Life Office Affair Stories That Ended Badly

Sometimes the most entertaining affair stories are the ones that actually happened. You know what they say - truth is stranger than fiction. And in this case, it's even more interesting than fiction. While affairs happen in all workplaces, the office place is where the real drama happens. And often, the office is where the risks are much higher when it comes to affairs. The consequences of being exposed are much higher. People can lose their jobs, their careers, their reputations, their marriages, and even their lives. Seemingly important and powerful people are reduced to shadows of their former selves when their sex scandals get exposed.

Why are there so many sex scandals and affairs that happen in offices? I suppose it's one job where there's a lot more interaction than usual. Also, there is usually an equal amount of women, which can't be said for many other professions. Construction workers, for example, are mostly male. On the hand, there are other professions that are female-dominated. As it turns out, putting the two sexes together might not always be a good idea. And it's no one's fault - sometimes it's just too hard to control your urges.

15 James McGreevey And Golan Cipel - Gay Governor Resigns

From 2002 to 2004, James McGreevey served as the 52nd governor of New Jersey. It couldn't have ended worse. He ended up resigning after his love affair with his aide, Golan Cipel, became public. Alarm bells started ringing when he appointed this guy to be his homeland security adviser, despite the fact that Golan Cipel had no prior experience. Threats of sexual harassment lawsuits forced James to resign, and later confessed in a statement that he was gay:  "As glorious and meaningful as it would have been to have a loving and sound sexual experience with another man, I knew I'd have to undo my happiness step by step as I began chasing my dream of a public career and the kind of 'acceptable' life that went with it. So, instead, I settled for the detached anonymity of bookstores and rest stops – a compromise, but one that was wholly unfulfilling and morally unsatisfactory."

14 John F. Kennedy And Marilyn Monroe - The Affair That "Never Happened"

Officially, this affair never happened. But the rumors never seem to go away, and the alleged affair might even have cost Marilyn Monroe her life. If any affair ended badly, it was this one. In truth, it's hardly a rumor that John F. Kennedy cheated on his wife while in the oval office. There are even rumors that Marilyn Monroe called Jackie and told her that she'd been screwing the president. But what really made this affair scary was the way it allegedly ended. Apparently, Monroe was feeling guilty about the affair and started telling too many people. Some say that when the CIA found out, they saw it as a threat to the president and had Marilyn Monroe killed, and then made it look like suicide.

13 Silvio Berlusconi And Karima El Mahroug - Underrage Scandal

Silvio Berlusconi was yet another leader who became embroiled in a sex scandal. He allegedly paid a 17-year-old girl for sex. Her name was Karima El Mahroug, and she was a belly dancer he hired to perform at a private party at his residence. In truth, this is just one of many controversies that Berlusconi was facing at the time. He's since garnered a reputation for being one of the most corrupt politicians of all time. Since the incident, both he and the girl claim that they never had sex, and that the money he gave her was just a gift to help a struggling girl out. But the general consensus is that he got away with having sex with this underage girl.

12 Bill Clinton And Monica Lewinsky - Most Infamous Affair Ever

Perhaps the biggest office affair in history was the one which almost ended Bill Clinton's presidency. He was on trial for impeachment for lying about not having an affair with Monica Lewinsky, which he clearly was. Monica Lewinsky was an intern he hired to work in the oval office. Therefore, it's only fitting that perhaps the biggest office affair of all time happened in the most important office of the world - the oval office. Bill Clinton allegedly had sexual encounters with Monica 9 times. In his defense, Bill Clinton famously said: "I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky. I never told anybody to lie, not a single time; never. These allegations are false. And I need to go back to work for the American people. Thank you."

11 Harry Stonecipher And Debra Peabody - CEO Forced To Resign

Harry Stonecipher was once one of the most powerful men in America. He was the CEO of aerospace giant Boeing, and had a long and distinguished career. But in the end, it all came crashing down because of an affair with a woman named Debra Peabody. Although she worked for Boeing, she did not report to Stonecipher directly and therefore had no business interacting with him. In the end, the Boeing Ethics Board found that: "As we explored the circumstances surrounding the relationship, we just found some things that we thought reflected poorly on Harry's judgment and would impair his ability to lead the company going forward." Stonecipher was forced to resign, and his wife filed for divorce days later.

10 Kwame Kilpatrick And Christine Beatty - Sexts Revealed Affair With Chief Of Staff

Kwame Kilpatrick was one of the most corrupt US Mayors that ever lived. He served as the mayor of Detroit from 2002 to 2008, and resigned after numerous scandals hit him. He actually was forced to do jail time because of perjury related to his affair with Christine Beatty, his chief of staff. They were both married at the time of their affair, which was publicized with the release of sexual text messages. When they fired a police officer that suspected the affair, that proved to be their worst possible decision. They were later found guilty of obstruction of justice, and had to serve a minimum of 4 months in jail.

9 Julie Roehm And Sean Womack - Wal-Mart Affair

Wal-Mart is one of the biggest companies in America, so it only makes sense that one of the biggest office affair stories comes from within its offices. Julie Roehm was once the Marketing Executive of Wal-Mart, but then it all came crashing down. To be fair, it wasn't just her cheating scandal that got her fired, but also her questionable business practices. She admitted to accepting gifts from people that were trying to "buy favors" from her, and doing the same thing in return to people she wanted to get on the right side of. But the most scandalous reason for her firing was her alleged affair with her subordinate, Sean Womack. She denies this, but emails between the two were revealed, and the evidence is pretty compelling. Both were married at the time.

8 John Edwards and Rielle Hunter - Covering Up Affair With Campaign Funds

John Edwards was once a senator from North Carolina, but everything fell apart when his extramarital affair was exposed. He was indicted in 2011 for using campaign contribution laws to cover up his affair with campaign worker Rielle Hunter. Somehow, he got away with it. The National Enquirer blew this story wide open. There was allegedly a sex tape that found its way into court, although the judge later order that to be destroyed. There was also allegations that Rielle Hunter's baby girl was actually fathered by Edwards. And after the whole affair scandal died down, Edwards asked Hunter to move into his house with him (his wife had left him). Rielle Hunter broke up with him a year later.

7 Steve Phillips And Brooke Hundley - Assault Allegations And Affairs

The world of ESPN is not safe from office affairs. In 2009, it was revealed that Steve Phillips, a man who had previously struggled with sexual assault allegations, had been having an office affair. To make matters worse, it was with a 22-year-old production assistant named Brooke Hundley. Embarrassingly, their sexual text messages were revealed to the public, including messages like: "I need ur lips on me. Ur tongue licking me," and "Do me a favor. No Makeup and no perfume. I can’t go home with any sign of u on me. Deal?" Or even "I just got a really bad call frm my wife that some woman called her about me screwing someone in Bristol. I am f*cked." As a result, his wife divorced him and he was fired by ESPN.

6 David Letterman And Stephanie Birkitt - Didn't Lose Job Or Wife Over Affair

Another television personality who got into trouble because of his affairs off camera was David Letterman. According to many people, Letterman was famous for having relationships with several of his female guests, as well as his employees on the show. But in contrast to many other affairs on this list, David Letterman didn't lose much. His wife stuck by him, and CBS never fired him. The allegations came forth after a co-worker tried to blackmail him into handing over 2 million dollars in return for keeping quiet. Although there have been many rumors about his alleged affairs, the only one he admitted to was his affair with Stephanie Birkitt, his assistant on the show. He apologized on his show, saying “I’m terribly sorry. [My wife] has been horribly hurt by my behavior, and when something happens like that … you try to fix it…. So let me tell you folks: I got my work cut out for me.”

5 Mark Souder And Tracy Jackson - Christian Radio Show Co-Hosts

Mark Souder was a US Republican Representative who was forced to resign in 2010 following an affair he had with one of his female aides. Her name was Tracy Jackson, and she was also married. She was hired by Mark Souder to serve as a co-host to a Christian radio show. Ironically, one of the things they talked about on air was abstinence. When he resigned, he released the following statement: "It is with great regret I announce that I am resigning from the U.S. House of Representatives as well as resigning as the Republican nominee for Congress in this fall's election....I sinned against God, my wife, and my family by having a mutual relationship with a part time member of my staff. I am so shamed to have hurt those I love."

4 Dominique Strauss-Kahn And Nafissatou Diallo - With The Hotel Maid

Another hugely powerful person who was embroiled in a sex scandal that got way out of control was Dominique Strauss-Kahn. He served as the director of the International Monetary Fund, one of the most powerful organizations in the world. It all went south when he was accused of sexually assaulting a maid in a hotel. Part of the evidence included semen found on her shirt. There was a major court case surrounding it, and he was forced to resign. However, doubts were later cast on whether there was actually any violence or forced used by Dominique. That wasn't the last time he was embroiled in sex scandals, though... He was later accused of running a massive French prostitution ring.

3 Elliot Spitzer's Prostitution Scandal

Eliot Spitzer's career ended when it was revealed that he had spent $80,000 on prostitutes. This man was forced to resign from his role as the 54th governor of New York in 2008 as a result. It all started when he was being investigated for accepting bribes. They followed the money trail, and it led them straight to the uncomfortable fact that Eliot Spitzer had paid $1,000 dollars for a 2 hour session with a high class call girl. Digging a little deeper, they found that Spitzer had enjoyed no less than 8 similar liaisons with prostitutes prior to this incident. Upon his resignation, he said: "I cannot allow for my private failings to disrupt the people's work. Over the course of my public life, I have insisted – I believe correctly – that people take responsibility for their conduct. I can and will ask no less of myself. For this reason, I am resigning from the office of governor."

2 Tiki Barber And Traci Lynn Johnson - Affair While Wife Was Pregnant With Twins

Another example of an affair that happened in a newsroom comes in the form of Tiki Barber. This man used to be an NFL player for the Giants, and then became a correspondent for NBC. While he was working there, he met Traci Lynn Johnson. She was working as an intern for NBC, and was just 23 years old when she began having an affair with Tiki Barber. The most devastating part of all this is that he began the affair while his wife of 16 years was pregnant with twins. Besides losing his marriage, not much else happened to Barber after this affair became public. He kept his job, and even married the same girl he had cheated on his wife with.

1 Thomas Jefferson And Sally Hemmings - We'll Never Know The Truth

The last office affair on the list is somewhat of a legend. We all know that Thomas Jefferson was the third president of the United States. But many people don't know about his involvement with black slaves. He didn't try to free the slaves while he was president, and owned slaves all his life. There is also evidence of him mistreating his slaves with excessive whippings. But the main controversy has to do with one female slave he owned named Sally Hemmings. In 1998, DNA testing was done on both Jefferson's and Hemming's descendants, and found that "the DNA study ... indicates a high probability that Thomas Jefferson fathered Eston Hemings." This indicates that Sally Hemmings was not only Thomas Jefferson's slave, but also his mistress.
