Conspiracy theories are fun to think about it. For example, the conspiracy theory that people write fake conspiracy theories online to discredit other conspiracy theories. And, while some conspiracy theories are a little far fetched — like the idea that all of our politicians are actually lizard people — there are a number of theories that are just recently getting proven. They were considered crazy theories in the past, but thanks to a number of whistle blowers, we now know that they are true.
For example, one of the most commonly discussed conspiracy theories that has been proven is Project MK Ultra. For those that don't know, MK Ultra was a CIA program that tried to determine whether or not mind control was possible. The program ran for nearly 20 years and some of the documents released about the program are far too graphic to be discussed here! But, most notably, one of the people that were experimented on during MK Ultra was Ted Kaczynski, also known as The Unabomber. The CIA claims to have stopped the program, but who knows what's going on behind closed doors! Nonetheless, here are a number of conspiracy theories that turned out to be true!
15 The US Government Planned On Using Bats
The Bat Bomb was a weapon designed in 1942. It was essentially a canister with over a thousand hibernating bats inside of it. Each bat had a small bomb attached to it. The idea behind the Bat Bomb was relatively simple. The bomb would be dropped, the bats would fly out of the bomb and then inhabit the area within a 20—40 mile radius and the timed bombs would cause the bats to explode, starting fires throughout Japanese cities.
The US military hoped that they could pack ten B-24 bombers with these bombs, releasing over a million bats in the target location. Had the military used conventional means to attack Japanese cities, they would only have caused between 160 to 400 fires per bomb. But, under the Bat Bomb project, each bomb would have started 3,600 to 4,700 fires.
An estimated $2 million was spent on the project and it was scrapped before it was ever used.
14 Your Government Is Spying On You
How more people aren't up in arms about the mistreatment of Edward Snowden is beyond me. He sacrificed his entire life to inform people around the world that their government was spying on them. Up until Snowden released classified documents, only conspiracy nuts believed that they were being tracked by the government. Today, it's pretty much common knowledge that the government can spy on you. However, most people don't realize the extent that the government can spy.
Snowden released documents that revealed a government program called XKeyscore. Essentially, XKeyscore gave the United States government the ability to read everyone's email, listen to whatever phone call they want, view everyone's browsing histories, Microsoft Word documents, all without needing to obtain a warrant from a judge. The goal of XKeyscore was to create digital fingerprints for everyone around the world. There's a good chance that the NSA has an entire log of your emails, text messages, phone calls, and even what webpages you've visited and when. Oh, and they can listen to you through your phone's microphone and camera pretty much whenever they want.
13 The US Government Planned On Faking An Attack
If you suggest that the United States government orchestrated the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, most people will call you crazy. After all, why would the government kill thousands of its own citizens just to start a war? While I personally don't subscribe to 9/11 conspiracy theories, the United States government has had a few shady ideas in the past.
Operation Northwoods was drafted in the 1960s as a way for America to launch a war against Cuba. The plan involved assassinating Cubans, sinking boats of Cuban refugees, hijacking planes, blowing up a U.S. ship, and even launching violent terrorist attacks on cities throughout America — and blaming Cubans for it. The attacks would have been designed to trick the American public — and the international community — into supporting a war to remove Cuba's leader, Fidel Castro. Nazi Germany pulled a similar stunt, called the Gleiwitz Incident, as reason for invading Poland in 1939.
Amazingly, Operation Northwoods was initially authorized by Joint Chiefs of Staff, and signed by Chairman Lyman Lemnitzer before getting rejected by the Kennedy administration.
12 Congress Had A Secret Bunker In Case Of Nuclear War
This is somewhat of a dated conspiracy. Back when the United States was on the cusp of a nuclear war with the Soviet Union, people speculated that the government had a bomb shelter hidden somewhere. And, in 1992, that conspiracy theory was proven to be true after the bunker was exposed in a newspaper article.
Known as Project Greek Island, the bunker is located at the Greenbrier hotel in West Virginia. When the hotel was undergoing massive renovations, the government took it upon themselves to use the existing construction to build a massive underground bunker. The bunker consisted of a number of large rooms, one of which is an auditorium big enough to seat 470 people. The facility was stocked with 6 months worth of supplies, and was maintained for thirty years by government workers posing as employees for a fake company called Forsythe Associates. Who knows how many of these bunkers exist across America!
11 Water Is Actually Turning Frogs Gay...Kind Of
For years, has been using his alt-right website InfoWars.com to claim that tap water is filled with chemicals that are turning frogs gay. It sounds like a ridiculous claim, and if this were true, certainly these chemicals would have a terrible effect on humans, right? The gay frog conspiracy was often used to discredit Alex Jones, but that's all about to change.
In a study published on September 7, 2015, a study found that there was a massive female frog population in a number of ponds located near cities. Conversely, there were a small number of female frogs located in ponds in remote areas. Another study found that there were a number of frogs that had both testicles and eggs, which essentially meant that the amphibians were a mix between male and female. With these two studies combined, researchers have determined that there are estrogenic chemicals leaking into the ponds around cities that are actually changing the gender of frogs! So, while water isn't making frogs gay, it's changing their biological makeup!
10 How The United States Got Involved In Vietnam
Sometimes referred to as the USS Maddox Incident, the Gulf of Tonkin Incident was more or less the reason why the United States got involved in the Vietnam War. Essentially, the United States claimed that there were two sea battles in the Gulf of Tonkin where North Vietnam was the aggressor. These sea battles lead to Congress passing the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, which gave President Lyndon B. Johnson the power to help any Southeast Asian country that was threatened by communist aggression.
In the 2003 documentary The Fog of War former United States Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara admitted that the events didn't happen the way that the government initially reported. To start, the USS Maddox was entered battle on the dates reported, August 2 and August 4. On August 2, the USS Maddox fired three warning shots, and on August 4, the USS Maddox wasn't anywhere near North Vietnamese naval vessels!
9 The Canadian Government Funded Radar
The first ever Gaydar device, unfortunately known as the Fruit Machine, was used by the Canadian government during the Cold War. The government was trying to prevent homosexuals from working as civil servants or in the military. With the help of a psychologist at a Canadian university, the Canadian government was set to remove homosexuals from the work force. According to the government, they felt that homosexuals were weak and would have made easy targets for Soviet spies to blackmail them. It's ridiculous, right?
Essentially, the machine was a series of psychological tests. Subjects were shown different images to see which image someone's pupils reacted to. The Gaydar machine was used up until 1967, when the government officially pulled funding from the program. The device was never able to find the difference between a homosexual and heterosexual person.
8 Israel Pays Students To Defend Government Online
The internet is an incredibly powerful tool, and how we perceive the internet has changed completely over the past decade. In the early stages of the internet, we were taught to not use our actual names or give anyone details about us. Now, you can pay someone to give you a lift, meet the love of your live, or earn a government salary by spreading propaganda online! Wait, what?
In 2013, reporters uncovered what should have been the biggest story of the year: the Israeli government recruited students to spread propaganda online. Essentially, the Israeli government has been caught recruited more than 500 students to respond to social media posts that speak negatively of the country. But what's scary is that they aren't the only country to do it. China, Russia, and even the United States have been caught paying people to spread propaganda!
7 The Existence Of High-Profile Criminals
For decades, people have been speculating about the existence of a number of high profile pedophile rings. The British government, the Catholic Church, and Hollywood, are the big three. And, as it turns out, the existence of these pedophile rings are more than just conspiracy theories.
Thanks to a number of investigative journalists, the Westminster pedophile dossier was created, though it is yet to be released to the public. The crimes of the Catholic Church were brought forward by the 'Spotlight' team in 2003. Most recently, the pedophile rings in Hollywood were brought down by the movie An Open Secret. Kevin Spacey, X-Men director Bryan Singer, and a number of hollywood elites are finally having to face the music for their crimes. Every week, a new celebrity is exposed, and with Corey Feldman on the cusp of naming dozens of abusers, it's only a matter of time before the entire Hollywood Pedophile Ring is taken down.
6 Researchers Refused To Give African American Men Syphilis Treatment
Somehow, many Americans believe that the government is working in their best interest, despite all the evidence of the contrary. If you're still not convinced that the US government has done horrific things in the past, maybe the Tuskegee syphilis experiments will convince you.
Between 1932 and 1972, the U.S. Public Health Service was purposefully avoiding treating men in Alabama suffering from syphilis in exchange for giving them free health care. The purpose of the study was to observe the natural progression of untreated syphilis. The 600 participants were told that the experiment would last six months, but it continued for 40 years. The participants were never told that they had syphilis, and even after penicillin was proven to treat syphilis, the men were not given any treatment. The study was only ended after Peter Buxtun, who tried to cancel the study in 1968, went to the press in the early 1970s. Once the study made national headlines, it was terminated.
5 The Real Reason For The War On Drugs
In 2016, Harper's Magazine published a 22-year-old interview with one of President Nixon's top advisers. In the interview, the former Nixon adviser, John Ehrlichman, confessed that the war on drugs was never about getting drugs off the street. In fact, Ehrlichman said that the War On Drugs was about removing Nixon's enemies from the voting population: the antiwar left, and black people.
In the interview, Ehrlichman also went on to say "We couldn't make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and the blacks with the heroin. And then criminalizing both heavily we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did."
4 The US Government Has Been Secretly Investigating UFOs
The entire UFO phenomenon can be traced back to 1947, when an alleged flying saucer crashed in Roswell, New Mexico. The US military cleaned up the crash before anyone could get a good look at the object. The official story is that a weather balloon crashed, but conspiracy theorists are convinced that the government is hiding something much more sinister, but they haven't had any proof... until now!
In late 2017, a former Pentagon official admitted that the US government had been secretly studying UFOs. The official, Luis Elizondo, revealed that he was the head of the Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program from 2007 to 2012. The government spent more than $22 million studying UFOs, and many of their findings remain classified. Luis Elizondo stepped down from the position after he was denied additional funding. According to Luis, the program is still running today, but has not revealed who took over the program after him. Two videos have been released, which Elizondo believes prove that we've been visited by extraterrestrials.
3 A Number Of Journalists Secretly Work For The CIA
Operation Mockingbird was a large-scale CIA program that began in the early 1950s, with the aim of manipulating the news. According to reports, the CIA hired American journalists to pump out propaganda in their respective platforms. Several student, cultural, and magazine organizations were created to act as fronts for the program.
This propaganda operation was quietly revealed to the public in 1976 by the Church Committee, an organization created to study government intelligence operations. The Church Committee concluded that the CIA had a network of several hundred individuals around the world that were influencing opinion through propaganda. Just before the Church Committee report was released, the CIA dropped all contacts with its accredited journalists. However, it is unknown whether or not the CIA is still working with people who did not receive press credentials, such as freelancers. Does anyone else think it's a little odd that former CIA employee Anderson Cooper had no media experience before getting hired at CNN?
2 The US Government Has Funded Over 30 Coup Attempts
The United States government loves to meddle in other countries. The CIA alone has been part of at least 30 coup attempts since the end of the second world war. Most recently, Wikileaks reported that the US government has been secretly funding Syrian opposition since 2006. Even more alarmingly, the CIA allegedly helped Osama bin Laden train an army that would eventually become Al-Qaeda, and that army was used to wage war against the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. Though this has never been officially admitted, history repeats itself.
In 1951, and again in 1956, the CIA used propaganda, military, and intelligence operations to help Tibetan resistance groups. By 1964, the US government was spending approximately $1.7 million every year to fund Tibetan resistance groups. The goal was to help Tibet wage a war of independence against China because the US feared China would use Tibet as a gateway to wage war in the Middle East.
1 The Lost Cosmonaut
In 1961, cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin was the first human to enter space. Or, at least that's the official story. Many conspiracy theorists believe that Gugarin was the first person to enter space and return alive. In other words, they believe that the Soviet Union was hiding the deaths of countless cosmonauts before Gagarin. After all, what are the chances that the Soviet Union successfully sent a man into space on their first attempt?
The theory is officially known as the Lost Cosmonaut theory, and there's actually some truth to it. In 1960, Valentin Bondarenko died on the tenth day of a 16-day endurance experiment in Miscow. He was killed after an error he made caused the entire chamber to burst into flames. Bondarenko's death was hidden from the world for 20 years, and any photos he appeared him were altered to have him removed. If they did it once, is it crazy to think they would've done it a second time?
