There have been some massive babies born all over the world. It doesn’t seem to be one specific culture or country that creates gigantic babies. In fact, this article shows extremely large babies, and by that, we mean babies twice the size of a normal newborn from all over the world, including India, China, Germany, Canada, Texas, Britain, California, Indonesia, etc. So, it seems that extremely large newborn babies have nothing to do with specific cultural diets or genetics, but instead something very different. Most cases of extremely large newborns have actually been attributed to the mother having a case of diabetes. The baby in the stomach ends up growing quite large from all the glucose it’s receiving. According to Dr. Ian Holzman, chief of newborn medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, “A baby gets this large usually because a mother has poorly controlled diabetes and the baby is getting extra glucose calories during the pregnancy.” While having a gigantic baby might seem like a novel idea, there are risks involved with such births, and the mothers are often required to have a C-section to avoid complications. Dr. Ian Holzman said the risks “to the baby include birth trauma…include nerve damage to the arm, abdomen, or injury to the head, as the doctor pulls the infant out if delivered vaginally.” Read on to hear more about some of these gigantic babies.
15. Largest Baby Born In India
This is crazy. The mother, Nandini, was only 19 years old, not having any sign of obesity or overweight struggles. Everyone was extremely surprised by the size of this little baby girl, as Nandini had been going along to the Doctors for regular checkups while pregnant and had had no issues and no suspicion that she was carrying such a large baby. She was born in Southern India last year in May of 2016. This baby weighed 15 pounds, which is the same size of a typical 6-month-old baby. The baby was born by Caesarean section weighing twice the size of a regular baby. Dr Venkatesh Raju was very impressed, as she was the biggest baby ever born in India and the largest baby girl ever born. He had never seen a baby born this huge in his whole career.
14. Baby Weighing 15 Pounds In China
The Wang family had a baby weighing 14.8 pounds, born in Daxing Hospital. Because of popular belief, the mother was fed large amounts of grain to help make a big healthy baby. The mother was very overweight and had a case of diabetes. Although Dr. Liu warned against this–saying it could be dangerous for women when conceiving–apparently, ladies in China try to eat a lot of food once they’re pregnant. Mr. Wang is very proud of his new child and was posting photos of his baby over social media, bragging to jealous relatives. The baby was not only fat, but also tall, being measured at 58 cm long as a newborn, which is twice the length of any typical baby born in China. Not surprisingly, the mother had a Caesarean section to give birth to the baby.
13. Germany’s Biggest Baby Born Naturally
This baby is one hunk-a-chunka! She looks so huge. Born in Germany at 13.47 pounds and 22.6 inches long without the help of a caesarean section, she was born in July of 2013 at the University Hospital in Leipzig. The baby’s large size has been put down to the mother’s gestational diabetes according to Der Spiegel in the German paper. Interestingly, most overweight babies born are due to diabetes or obesity in the mother. The baby, Jasleen, was born not only extremely large, but thankfully, also strong and healthy without any major complications. She just had to stay at the hospital a bit longer than the mother. If you’re after a bit of trivia, ‘fetal macrosomia’ is the medical term used to describe any baby born weighing more than 8 pounds and 13 ounces. She’s known as the biggest baby ever born in Germany through natural birth.
12. Massachusetts’ Heaviest Baby Girl
One of the heaviest baby girls born was Carisa Ruscak—born on April 2014 at 14.5 pounds. The couple had already had a baby that weighed 10 pounds, so they were expecting a big baby, but not quite this big. When the baby was born, all the hospital staff were so excited and could not believe how large the baby looked. According to Huffington Post, “Everyone in the operating room was like… ‘look at the size of this baby! Let’s get her on the scale, what does she weigh?’” This actually came as a huge relief to the mother as she said that she had been in a great deal of pain leading up to the birth, so to hear how massive the baby was, helped put things in perspective. She now knew why she had felt so uncomfortable.
11. British Baby, King George
Baby George King was so large that it almost killed him. He got stuck at his shoulders as he was trying to come out because his shoulders were so wide. The doctors were so worried that they only gave him a 10% chance of surviving. That poor mother! As if giving birth to a baby didn’t already seem like the most daunting task in the world, imagine the baby is so big and wide, he actually can hardly fit out. Amazingly, even though he was double the size of a normal baby weighing 15 pounds and 7 ounces, he still managed to come out naturally, but wasn’t breathing for the first 20 minutes until being resuscitated. The big baby was clearly a fighter, because he recovered and ended up going home in full health.
10. California Baby, Valentino
Valentino Francisco Corsetti was a huge babe. In fact, he was the biggest baby born at the Sutter Davis Hospital in Sacramento, California. He was 13 pounds and 11 ounces. His parents had had two children already; both children had not been even close to this size at birth. The mother, Kelly Corsetti, shared with the Sacramento Bee, “My husband walked over to the scale with (my sister-in-law) and I just heard both of them laughing and going, ‘Oh my gosh, it can’t be. He can’t be that big.’ They turned around and told me how much he weighed. I was shocked.” Apparently, everyone thought Kelly’s stomach looked huge leading up to the birth, but of course, no one expected the bub to be that massive. I mean, who would? You never think a baby is actually going to come out twice the size of every other baby.
9. Victoria’s Fattest Newborn
Possibly Victoria’s largest baby, Brian Junior was 13.5 pounds at birth and measured 57 cm in length. He was delivered at Mercy Hospital in Melbourne Australia this year in late January 2017. The mother, Ms. Corrigan, admitted that she had always hoped to have a fat little baby. She got her wish, except that the baby wasn’t little at all. She just got a big fat baby. Ms. Corrigan was very brave that she only had gas to supplement her completely natural birth to this massive baby. Everything went smoothly, except for her husband admitting that he thought the birth was a bit scary. The mum was completely stoked to hear about her giant baby, responding with how awesome it was when being told the news of the baby’s incredible size.
8. Indonesia’s Largest Baby, Akbar
You know the baby has got to be big when it gets a name literally meaning ‘the great’ and has crowds flocking to catch sight of the gigantic baby. Akbar Risudd was born in Indonesia at the Abdul Manan Hospital in September of 2009. He was weighed upon birth to be 19 pounds and 2 ounces, and he was 24 inches in length. They say his huge size was due to his mother’s diabetes. They had to do a Caesarean section that lasted for 40 minutes to avoid the dangers of giving birth to such a large baby. The father was very pleased to see his wife and child healthy and well, although he was concerned as to how he would have enough money to provide for all the milk the baby would need.
7. Siberian Baby, Nadia
A Russian mother gave birth to a gigantic baby girl, Nadia, on the 17th of September, 2007. The mother and father were extremely shocked when the baby came out at 17 pounds and 5 ounces. The mother, Tatyana Khalina, said that the father was in shock, he didn’t know what to say. She said he couldn’t say a word; instead, he just kept blinking. This probably came as such a surprise to the middle-aged couple because they already had eight daughters and three sons, and none of them had been this sort of size. Tatyana Khalina was not able to have a natural birth. She had a caesarean section at a hospital in Siberia, in the local maternity section, in the Altai region. The mum was 43 at the time she gave birth.
6. Biggest Healthy Baby On Record
The story of a baby born in September 1955 in Aversa, Italy to mother Carmelina Fedele is extremely famous, although, at the same time, extremely difficult to find any real details about. For example, we don’t even know what the baby’s name was. The mother must have done a good job at keeping a low profile, or perhaps they just weren’t as interested in all the details back in 1955. They didn’t realize people would still be talking about this huge baby all the way ‘til 2017. The baby weighed 22 pounds and 8 ounces. This baby is mentioned in the Guinness World Records as the largest healthy baby without any genetic disorders or unusual growths ever born to actually survive. How can a baby be so famous and so hard to find on the internet? Perhaps it was all just a legend of Italy.
5. Woman Told She Was Having Twins
How bizarre is this? Cathleen Abels, from Cape Town, was told during her pregnancy that she was having twins; but instead, she had one gigantic baby. The baby girl was born on March 2007 at Tygerberg Hospital. The baby weighed 16 pounds, 9 ounces (7.3 kg). The mother was shocked to have such a big baby. She said that a lot of her family were already quite big people, but none like this. Cathleen said, “I was shocked when I saw how big she was. I never expected it.” The brave mother opted for a completely natural birth, no caesarean section. She said the birth was very painful but she was just glad the baby was okay. It was reported that the little girl had a little bit of difficulty breathing, needing help from the ward, but was okay.
4. Texas Baby Boy
Again, another very big baby. The mother, Janet Johnson, had a baby boy in July 2011 at the Good Shepherd Hospital in Longview, Texas. The big boy weighed 16 pounds at birth. The baby was named JaMichael and was the biggest baby ever born on record at this hospital and even more than that, the biggest baby on record for that state. The doctor had no idea the baby would come out at such a large size, although he thought the baby would be big; he was only guessing around 12 or 13 pounds. He was only 3 or 4 pounds off! Dr. Kirk admitted, “He was much larger than expected. Both his mother and father are large people, and she was diagnosed with gestational diabetes, which contributed to the baby’s size.”
3. Guinness World Record Baby
The babies listed so far have been big, but nothing in comparison to the baby boy born in Ohio, USA in 1879. Huffington Post agreed saying, “While big babies seem to be on the rise, the Guinness Book of World Records says the heaviest baby ever born weighed 23 pounds, born to Anna Bates in 1879.” The mother, Anna Bates, was quite tall herself. She was 7 feet and 11 inches and the father was 7 feet and 9 inches. They are the tallest married couple according to Guinness Book of World Records. You would not believe how big her baby was; he weighed a whopping total of 22 pounds (9.98 kg). Very sadly, the baby couldn’t survive and died only 11 hours after birth. The father of the baby, Martin van Buren Bates, thought his baby looked like a perfect six-month-old baby when he was first born.
2. California 16 Pound Baby
The 16-pound and 1.7-ounce baby, Sammisano Joshua Talai Otuhiva, was born in California in August of 2013. Funnily enough, the parents didn’t even know they had made any sort of record initially. It wasn’t until the paper came out bragging about a baby that was born a whole pound lighter than theirs, that the relatives of this 16-pound baby made them set the record straight and let the media know about their baby. Unfortunately, there isn’t any official record kept of baby sizes to actually know who ranks in size, but you do occasionally hear the crazy story, like this one. The parents were excited to have such an amazing big baby. They did say it was hard because he honestly didn’t fit any of the clothes or diapers from his baby shower. He didn’t even fit his six-month clothes, and he had to go straight to 12-month-old baby clothes!
1. Brazil’s Fat Baby
This baby is a giant baby born in Brazil at a hospital in Salvador. The baby, Ademilton dos Santos, weighed a total of 17 pounds at birth. His mother had him by Caesarean section, avoiding the risks of natural birth with such a large baby. The Brazilian Gynaecological Association said he “is the heaviest boy ever born in Brazil.” The mother, Francisca Ramos dos Santos, would have had a shock as she already had four children that had all weighed a pretty standard size at birth. The doctor attributed the baby’s large size to the mother’s diabetes. Apparently, they were expecting a big baby, but again, not quite this big, leaving all the staff, doctors, hospital, and parents in shock. The baby is healthy, other than having to receive oxygen and glucose solution at the hospital initially.
