Most of us are aware that some of our favorite films were sparked by the publication of a popular novel, but the age-old argument of ‘Which is better: the book or the movie?’ is a tough debate when it comes to these films.

The Marvel franchise for instance, technically derives from a series of comic books and has proven to be a blockbuster hit in every form, but many novels to film adaptations are spawned from one book and a great idea.

To make a list of highest grossing novel adaptations at the box office, the majority of the top 20 would be filled with Harry Potter films, Jurassic Park films and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. If we combine these series’, we can see a somewhat surprising list of best novels adapted for the big screen.

Alice and Wonderland – $1 Billion

Jaws – $1.15 Billion (adjusted)

The 1975 thriller must be included because it’s known as the first summer blockbuster hit of all time. In addition, it’s based off of a 1974 novel by Peter Benchley. The novel was a success, but nothing prepared Hollywood for Steven Spielberg’s adaptation. He omitted much of the novel’s subplots and focused on the shark, and the three main characters, played by Richard Dreyfuss, Roy Scheider and Robert Shaw.
