Rap star Future has just scored a Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT for $200,000. The 38-year-old Turn On The Lights rapper joined the ranks of Post Malone, Steph Curry, Lil Baby, and DJ Khaled who have also invested into one of the most successful collections in the nonfungible token space.

If you’ve spent any on Twitter you've probably already seen a Bored Ape Yacht Club, with a growing list of celebrities who own a Bored Ape NFT using it as their profile photo on the social media site.

On Twitter, NFT called out the Way 2 Sexy rapper saying, “Welcome to the club @1future.”

Futures primate-themed NFT features a smartly dressed ape in a skipper’s cap and a red smoker’s jacket. AllHipHop is reporting that the purchase set the rapper back about $200,000.

It appears the chart-topper got a good deal on the NFT, relatively speaking. CNET reports that the cheapest Bored Ape was selling for $230,000, and last month Post Malone dropped $734,000 on two non-fungible tokens from the popular collection.

There are only 10,000 Bored Yacht Club NFTs floating around and they act as both an avatar and a ticket to an online social club.

Last month a rare Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT sold at auction for a record $3.4 million, breaking the previous record of $2.4 million. The sale, the first on Sotheby’s newly-launched Metaverse digital art platform, was touted as “an NFT with historical significance” due to the collectible’s rarity.

On Facebook and Instagram, the official NFT profiles reported, “Future is the latest high profile celebrity to join the Bored Ape Yacht club, following Post Malone joining the club last week. Future purchased Bored Ape # 4672 and set it as his PFP later tweeting a picture of it with ‘gm’.”

What makes the Bored Ape Yacht Club line so expensive? It’s hard to say.

It’s likely a mixture of celebrity ownership, which drives hype, and the community the NFT owner has managed to create around the collection. Bored Ape has organized meetups in New York and California. Bored Ape get-togethers have also popped up in Hong Kong and the UK. There was even a weekend of festivities for owners was held in New York, featuring an actual yacht party and a concert featuring Chris Rock, Aziz Ansari, and The Strokes.
