It may no longer be playable, but Kurt Cobain’s stage-smashed guitar sold for a small fortune at a recent auction, proving people will pay a high price tag for a sliver of musical history.

According to PEOPLE, a 1973 Fender Mustang owned by the late Nirvana frontman sold for nearly $500,000 last weekend. The sale was hosted by Julien’s Auction, which was selling a variety of musical memorabilia.

The guitar was expected to sell for $400,000, so it went for over asking for a final price of $486,400.

Kurt played the guitar during two performances during Nirvana’s first U.S. tour in 1989. He first played it on July 8 at Club Dreamerz in Chicago, Illinois, and again the next day at the Sonic Temple in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania.

During the second performance, Kurt infamously smashed the guitar during the band’s final performance of “Blew.”

After the show, Kurt signed the smashed guitar, only to trade it to Sluggo Cawley; Nirvana was staying at the Hullabaloo member’s apartment during their tour.

Kurt had noticed a smashed Gibson SG hanging on Sluggo’s wall, which he thought he could repair. He offered his Fender Mustang as a trade, to which the fellow musician agreed.

"Sluggo agreed to the trade and had Cobain inscribe the Mustang, signing as Nirvana and additionally drawing two flowers along the upper right portion of the pickguard before the band moved on to their next show,” Julien’s explains of the guitar’s history.

“Along the lower portion of the body, the inscription reads, 'Yo Sluggo / Thank for the trade / If it's illegal to Rock and Roll, then throw my ass in jail / Nirvana,’” the description added.

The auction house had a successful weekend rehoming a variety of musical history. Other notable items that sold at the auction included a 1972 18K gold diamond Ebel wristwatch, previously owned by Elvis, which sold for $256,000.

Bob Dylan's Wm. Knabe & Co. Brand Louis XV grand piano sold for $217,000, while Prince's 1992 Kurt Nelson Cloud model electric guitar with NFT went for $192,000. The auction also featured memorabilia from artists like John Lennon, Tupac Shakur, and Michael Jackson.

It’s unclear who the new owner of Kurt’s Fender Mustang is, but what is certain is that they must be a big fan of Nirvana to spend that type of cash.
