The late, and great Kurt Cobain, the star of Nirvana, one of the biggest bands from the 90s, is currently being honored in a very unique way. The artist who tragically took his own life in 1994 is making the headlines once again, as a very unique personal item of his has just sold at auction. It's not his guitar, or an article of clothing that went up for sale, but rather a very personal item that packs a lot of shock value. A snippet of his hair has just been auctioned for a huge amount of money, and TMZ reports that it only took 6 small strands to generate a whopping $14,145.

Celebrity items are often put on the auction block to generate money for charity and good causes. They're fan-favorites as well, and collectors will go to almost any length to gain possession of something that once belonged to their favorite stars.

Most often, there is an item of clothing or nostalgic prop that is offered for auction, but once in a while something truly unique makes the headlines, and this is definitely one of those times.

As it turns out, when Kurt Cobain embarked on his Bleach Tour, he made a stop to get his hair cut by friend and fan, Tessa Osbourne.  She took photographs of the moment that they shared, complete with proof that she had cut his hair, and she safeguarded the strands for years.

Entertainment Tonight reports that "Osbourne reportedly kept the hairs after the cut in Birmingham, England, and later gave them to artist Nicole DePolo after the singer’s death. The hairs were later given to John Reznikoff, who has the Guinness world record for the largest collection of historic hair.”

Iconic Auctions has just sold the strands of hair as part of a collection of other memorabilia belonging to Nirvana and Cobain, as well as The Beatles, Bod Dylan and Led Zeppelin.  They released a statement indicating; "This one-of-a-kind artifact is entirely fresh-to-market and is accompanied by an impeccable lineage of provenance including photos of Kurt posing with the woman who cut this hair, scissors in hand, and a fantastic shot of the hair actually being cut!" It has been reported that this cut took place in 1989.

Cobain went on to become known for his bleach blonde locks, making this an even more cherished item.

The hair strands have been carefully preserved under plastic, and it has been reported that the longest strand of the 6 is roughly 2.5 inches long.
