Penelope Cruz was born on April 28, 1974, in Alcobendas, Spain to Encarna Sanchez, a hairdresser and personal manager, and Eduardo Cruz, a retailer and car mechanic. She has two siblings, Monica, who is also an actress, and Eduardo, a singer, as well as a paternal half-sister named Salma. Cruz was raised as a Roman Catholic and spent much of her childhood at her grandmother's apartment in Alcobendas. She began studying classical ballet at the age of nine at Spain's National Conservatory and also took classes in Spanish ballet and theater at Cristina Rota's school. It was while watching the film "Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!" by Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar that Cruz became interested in acting.
