Updated, April 2024: On April 16th, NBC.com's NBC Insider published an article about the making of Brooklyn Nine-Nine's iconic Backstreet Boys' "I Want It That Way" sequence — which unfolded during a police lineup scene, with a witness who heard (but did not see) a suspect.

Per NBC Insider, the concept was instantly embraced by the showrunners and the cast, but potentially high licensing fees jeopardized the feasibility of the now-beloved scene:

"Right away, something funny was building, and the writers knew it. They also knew that making the moment happen as they conceived it was going to be an uphill battle, because any song used in that way has to be licensed, and Backstreet Boys tunes don't come cheap.

"'We knew that it was so fun as we were writing it. My attitude was, 'There is no way in hell that we will get to do this,'' co-producer Justin Noble said. 'The idea of getting a network in the US to pay for a song on a network comedy is unheard of ... There were many times when we would try to write in a song and the go-to joke was them coming back and saying,' Could you use the 1970s song 'At the Car Wash' instead?' Because [the network] owns the rights to it.'"

However, Brooklyn Nine-Nine eventually secured the rights, leading to the most-viewed B99 segment on YouTube today:

Andy Samberg (Jake Peralta)

SNL alum Andy Samberg served as the comedic force driving the show forward, and provided a focal character while fans became acquainted with the squad.

Samberg portrayed the lead character, Detective Jake Peralta, a quirky and slightly immature detective who eventually matures as the show progresses (to a point).

Samberg was the highest-paid cast member and earned $125,000 per episode, and served as a producer on Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Jeffords was literally gun-shy in the first season, having eschewed active duty following the birth of his twin daughters (Cagney and Lacey).
