After only a year of marriage, MacKenzie Scott and Dan Jewett have called it quits. Despite the philanthropist’s billion-dollar net worth, it’s not likely to be a messy (or costly) divorce.
According to legal documents obtained by TMZ, the former couple have already signed a "separation contract,” which stipulates what each party walks away with during the divorce.
It hasn’t been confirmed if the MacKenzie and Dan signed a prenup prior to their marriage, though the publication says it’s likely.
Speaking to PEOPLE Magazine, family law attorney David Glass said the divorce is likely going to be “pretty standard.”
Of the separation contract, Glass explained, "A separation contract under Washington law is when you say to your spouse, 'We're going to get divorced, and we can work out all the details ourselves. Let's write it up in an agreement and we'll just notify the court that we've figured everything out.’"
MacKenzie filed for divorce this month after only a year and a half of marriage. They originally tied the knot in March 2021.
Glasses added that Washington law ensures separation contracts remain private, so it’s unlikely the public will know more details of the divorce unless MacKenzie or Dan speak up.
"They each had their lawyers, they figured out who's keeping what real estate, who's keeping what assets,” the attorney continued. “They decided that there wouldn't be any sort of spousal support, and because they don't have any children [together], they didn't have to get into the issue of custody."
Dan signed the agreement and isn’t contesting MacKenzie’s request for divorce.
MacKenzie was previously married to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who she shares three children this. They were married for 25 years until their divorce in 2019.
MacKenzie walked away from their divorce with $37 billion (in addition to a 4% stake in Amazon). However, she pledged to give half of her wealth away to charity, a promise she’s been keeping. For example, in March, the philanthropist gave $436 million to Habitat for Humanity. The same month, she also donated $281 million to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
Neither MacKenzie nor Dan have spoken out about their divorce proceedings.
For his part, MacKenzie’s first ex-husband, Jeff Bezos, has been dating Lauren Sanchez for the last three years.
