It is a once in a lifetime opportunity to go to outer space with a handsome movie star.
A Russian businessman paid $1.6 million to fly into space with Leonardo DiCaprio.
The 37-year-old Vasily Klyukin, who resides in Monaco said it has been his dream to go into space. He was also determined to win the trip he bid at a charity and Aids research fundraiser at the Cannes Film Festival.
"I want to be a bit daring. I will have to give up smoking now for sure!"
The bidding for the trip started at $1.4 million. Klyukin will still spend a three-day training with Leonardo in New York before flying into space on board a suborbital spaceship built by Virgin Galactic. Virgin Galactic targets to become the world’s first-ever space travel agent. At least 11 Russians out of the 300 people have booked tickets to ride the Virgin Galactic. Each reportedly paid $200,000 for the one of a kind aerial adventure.
Klyukin also bought a gold and diamond necklace at the auction worth $540,000. Two tickets were also made available to two lucky winners as announced by host and actress Sharon Stone which raised another $2.4 million. The auction raised a total of $34 million, which is double last year’s $15 million.
Additional items sold were the Damien Hirst painting and an Annie Leibovitz family portrait.
DiCaprio was the first mystery guest and celebrity to accompany the winner on a Virgin Galactic flight into space. The 38-year-old also starred in The Great Gatsby which opened the 66th Cannes Film Festival on May 24th.
