Inmates are being crammed into the prison systems around the world almost faster than we can keep up with. New massive prison structures are created and maintained around the clock to facilitate the needs of this growing inmate population. Here are some of the worlds largest prisons that are in use today to facilitate the needs of these growing groups of criminals.
Los Angeles California, Twin Towers Correctional Facility
This prison was built in 1997. It’s spacious coridors span over 1.5 million square feet in downtown Los Angles. Although this is one of the worlds largest prisons, and one of the only skyscraper jails, this prison has some security concerns. 13 inmates have escaped since its opening in 1997. With a prison this large, security should be tightened down.
New York, Rikers Island
Rikers Island is a famous prison in New York. It has for many decades been one of the biggest prisons in the world. It was established in 1932 and has been in operation ever since. It sits atop a 400 plus acre island, making escape seem quite unfeasible. This jail has a budget of 860 million dollars a year and employes over 9,000 officers.
Silivri Turkey, Silivri Penitentiaries Campus
This 67 million dollar prison was built in rural Turkey in the 1960s. The need to house over 15,000 inmates in this area meant building a massive correctional facility. Complete renovation was done to the prison in 2005, adding more food options for the inmates, waiting lobbies for the visitors, work out facilities, and even restaurants for the many visitors.
