The World’s 15 Drunkest Countries In 2014

In 2012 alcohol abuse led to the deaths of 3.3 million people. That’s twice the population of Manhattan, and works out at over six deaths per minute. A report released in May 2014 by the World Health Organisation provides country profiles for alcohol consumption in the 194 Member States, and analyses alcohol’s impact on public health and the respective government policies in place to deal with the problem.

The findings of this report are plain and simple: almost 6% of all deaths are a result of alcohol abuse. The figure is higher for men (7.6%) and lower for women (4%), but the numbers for both sexes are striking. On average, this level of consumption means that every person over 15 consumes over 6.2 litres of pure alcohol per year, but because over 38% of the population doesn’t drink this number is actually much higher (around 17 litres) among the alcohol-consuming demographic.

Social, economic and religious conditions all affect levels of alcohol consumption, and countries like Iran, Pakistan, and Afghanistan take home the sobriety prize. On the other end of the scale are the countries that are beginning to slur their words, and fall asleep on the bar. In the list below we’ve collated statistics for the types of alcohol drunk most often, and how many litres of pure alcohol are being drunk by men and women in the biggest alcohol-consuming nations. Despite the cliches, readers might be surprised to see that Ireland and Russia don’t even make the top five.
