Leslie Alexander, the billionaire owner of Houston Rockets, purchased NYC’s most expensive downtown condo.
Topping his own Manhattan real estate record of $31.5 million, Alexander’s new two-story duplex penthouse, located at 18 Gramercy Park, costs a whopping $42 million. It boasts a 6,330 square feet interior, outdoor infinity pool and four massive terraces. It also has five bedrooms, five and a half bathrooms, a library gallery and salon. It faces Gramercy Park and offers a view of the Chrysler Building.
It was designed by Robert A.M. Stern and was once a hotel for women before it was converted into family-sized apartments. Alexander paid a down payment of $8.4 million, owing a monthly installment of $194,681 on the balance, which will include his mortgage.
Alexander is said to be worth $1.2 billion and was one of the richest people in the U.S. in 2006. He bought his NBA team in 1993 for $83 million, the same year the Rockets won their first-ever NBA title. He also owned the WNBA’s Houston Comets from 1997 to 2007. The Comets won the league’s first 4 WNBA championships from 1997 to 2000. In 2008, Alexander was named the best owner in the NBA by Forbes. Forbes magazine also named the Rockets the seventh richest team in the NBA, valued at $568 million.
