Five Most Famous Makeup Artists in the World

When we think of the world of fashion, the first two things that come to mind are the models and the designers. Kate Upton, Bar Rafaeli, Brooklyn Decker, Giselle Bundchen and Adriana Lima all go hand in hand with the likes of Giorgio Armani, Prada, Coco Chanel and Versace.  They are all household names with looks that men long for, and creations that women aspire for.

Behind these people however are the make up artists. Make up artists play an important role as they enhance the model’s beauty and complement the designer’s creations. These people are the most sought after in the business. They have the hands that wield the brushes to make the models look even better than perfect.

Here is a list of the top five most famous make up artists in the world of fashion today.

1. Sam Fine

This African American is one of the highest paid make up artists in the world today. Commanding a salary of more than $3,500 per day, which does not include overtime and travel allowances, Fine has done the faces of such supermodels like Naomi Campbell, Iman and Tyra Banks. Celebrities like Vanessa Williams, Queen Latifah and Patti Labelle have also availed of his services.

He has broken through the color barrier, having been hired as the first African American spokesperson for Revlon. He has also come out with his own book.  His appointment as the creative make up director of Fashion Fair Cosmetics is a perfect fit, as the company is known for producing cosmetic products for women of color.

Fine’s involvement with Fashion Fair Cosmetics will further bolster the company’s aim to provide foundation and powder shades that would work great with any woman regardless of skin color. It recognizes the fact that there is a variety and diverse range of tones in the different ethnic communities. With Fine’s extensive experience working with African American supermodels, singers and actresses, he will certainly be able to create for Fashion Fair Cosmetics the right products for the everyday woman.

2. Charlie Green

She is considered the Betsey Johnson of the make up artists’ world.  Charlie Green may have what many may consider as whimsical designs, but she is actually just one true artist who uses a woman’s face as her canvas and who does not allow herself to get tied down to any strict rule when it comes to applying make up. Just one glance at her and you will immediately see her free spirit ways, as she always sports bright lipsticks and platinum blonde hair to complement her wacky personality. She has an extremely active imagination, which she translates into her creative juices. And the top fashion companies and celebrities seem to agree. Among Green’s clients are Ann Taylor, Esprit, Estee Lauder, Fendi, Guess, L’Oreal, Lancôme, Maybelline, Oil of Olay, Revlon, Victoria’s Secret and Wella. Celebrities she has done include Alicia Keys, Angelina Jolie, Celine Dion, Charlize Theron, Elizabeth Hurley, Julia Stiles, Kate Beckinsale, Katie Holmes, Kelly Clarkson, Gwen Stefani, Paris Hilton, Penelope Cruz, Salma Hayek and Shania Twain.

3. Pat McGrath

Vogue Magazine has named her as the most influential make up artist in the world today. And to think that Pat McGrath never had any formal training in fashion nor in make up. She got her training listening to her mother’s comments while watching classic movies. She then completed an art foundation course in a school in Northampton in England.  She has since gone a long way, working the backstage of the runways of Paris, Milan and New York.  The amazing thing about McGrath is her flexibility and innovativeness. She can do a wide range of work while maintaining a sense of exclusivity for the fashion line.  McGrath is also credited for setting up the cosmetic line of Armani. She has also been the Beauty Director of Max Factor and Cover Girl cosmetic.

4. Tom Pecheux

Known for his sensibility, Tom Pecheux actually started out wanting to be a chef, not a make up artist. When he transferred to Paris in his teenage years however, he met a make up artist at the trendy nightclub called Le Palace. That meeting led to a change of profession, and he has reached the heights of the make up world since then. He did the make up of Princess Diana in that famous Vanity Fair cover in 1997. He also started working with the likes of Julia Roberts and Charlize Theron. He was then taken in by L’Oreal, before Shiseido appointed him as the company’s make up image creator. Tasked to choose the colors and textures for the Japanese company’s international line called The Makeup in 2001, Pecheux’s choices proved to be a hit. Since then, he has been a regular at major fashion houses like Prada and Gucci. Even the world of publishing seeks Pecheux constantly, with his works featured on several covers of Vogue. More recently, he has been appointed as the Creative Director of Estee Lauder.

5. Gucci Westman

Gucci Westman grew up in California and Sweden. Her growing up in different cultures probably provided her with unique viewpoints and inspirations, which later on influenced her body of work.  Westman is known for her ability to enhance a woman’s look in such a way that she would exude sensuality that is both attractive to men and non-threatening for women. Samples of this are the looks conveyed by the likes of Natalie Portman and Drew Barrymore. Westman also used to be one of the most sought after make up artists for magazine covers until the birth of her son slowed her down a bit. In the corporate world, Westman used to work for Lancome as its International Artistic Director. She was tasked to design color collections for the company, as well as style the models for advertisements and represent the company in beauty and fashion events. In 2008, Westman moved to Revlon as its Global Artistic Director. She has been basically assigned similar tasks, and she is credited for the company’s popular Daydreamer and Suede Rhapsody collections.
