On the outside celebrities look like they have it all. Fame, good looks, fortune and more opportunity than more people can imagine. A lot of ignorant people see celebrities and assume with all that money and power they do not have any problems. Well, if you think you are the only person in this world with issues, then you are going to have a hard time getting through life. Celebrities are human beings just like the rest of us.
They have insecurities, they battle internal demons and of course, they lose the people they love. Many of the people on the list below were unfortunate enough to lose several people that were close to them. While some of the following celebrities channeled their loss into their art, others have deeply suppressed what has happened to them.
The next eighteen celebrities have gone through a lot of pain and have suffered horrible losses. From losing children to losing spouses these next celebrities have been through it all. So next time you see someone and become envious, remember, we don't know what that person has been through or who they have lost.
18 Rick Moranis
Rick Moranis is a talented comedian who is known as an '80s icon. Moranis is best known for movies like Spaceballs, Ghostbusters and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. In 1997, the actor lost his wife Ann to breast cancer. This lead Moranis to stop acting, which was a loss to the industry. Instead, Moranis decided to focus on raising his two children and keeping his family together, something that is incredibly honourable.
The stay at home dad rarely does interviews since the passing of his wife, however, one time he did speak about his choice to quit acting in 2015 by saying nonchalantly, "I took a break, which turned into a longer break."
Moranis is extremely protective of his children, so protective he won't even reveal their names to the press. Rick Moranis is a good man and father, something that is rare in this day and age.
17 Patton Oswalt
Patton Oswalt is one of those actors who has been in everything. His recognizable face and brilliant talent has lead him to be featured in some awesome projects such as Zoolander, The Goldbergs, Big Fan, Young Adult and King of Queens. Over this summer, Oswalt suffered a terrible loss, when his wife Michelle Eileen McNamara died in her sleep. McNamara was a talented 46-year-old writer who left behind a seven-year-old daughter. Her sudden passing came as a shock to fans, friends and family. 102 days after the tragedy, Oswalt opened up about his loss, saying
"102 days at the mercy of grief and loss feels like 102 years and you have s--- to show for it. You will not be physically healthier. You will not feel 'wiser.' You will not have 'closure.' You will not have 'perspective' or 'resilience' or 'a new sense of self.' You WILL have solid knowledge of fear, exhaustion and a new appreciation for the randomness and horror of the universe. And you'll also realize that 102 days is nothing but a warm-up for things to come.I was face-down and frozen for weeks, It's 102 days later and I can confidently say I have reached a point where I'm crawling. Which, objectively, is an improvement. Maybe 102 days later I'll be walking.”
Our sincerest condolences go out to the actor and his family.
16 Liam Neeson
Liam Neeson is an actor who does not need much of an introduction. Appearing in films like Taken, Non-Stop and The Grey, he has been lucky when it comes to his career. In 1994, Neeson married the beautiful and talented Natasha Richardson who is best remembered for her roles in The Parent Trap and Maid in Manhattan. The pair were madly in love and when tragedy struck in 2009, Neeson was a mess about it.
The accident happened in Mont Tremblant, a prestigious ski destination outside Montreal, Canada. The actress and mother of two hit a tree while skiing, the cause of death was an epidural hematoma due to a blunt impact to her head. She was 45 at the time of her death.
The actor opened up about her death and the day it happened, saying "I went in to her and told her I loved her, I said 'Sweetie, you're not coming back from this, you've banged your head. It's – I don't know if you can hear me, but that's – this is what's gone down. And we're bringing ya back to New York. All your family and friends will come.'"
15 Eric Clapton
Eric Clapton is one of the most well-known recording artists on the planet. The singer and songwriter, who is now 71, had an incredible career releasing hit after hit including "Cocaine", "Change the World", "Bad Love", "Layla" and "Wonderful Tonight". However, his most touching song is without a doubt "Tears in Heaven", which was written for his son Connor.
Clapton's son passed away in a horrible accident when he was four years of age. The day was March 20, 1991, when Connor fell out of a New York City hotel window and was killed. The song describes the artist's feelings perfectly as he sings, “Would you know my name, if I saw you in heaven? Would it be the same, if I saw you in heaven? I must be strong, and carry on 'cause I know I don't belong, here in heaven.”
When Clapton was asked about the song he said “Tears of Heaven is a tricky one because I can't play that anymore. It would be inappropriate to use the memory of my son or what I felt at that time to gain any kind of influence with the audience.”
14 O.J. Simpson
O.J Simpson is a pretty well-known man. Simpson aka “The Juice” was a great American football player, broadcaster and actor. He was also on trial for killing his wife Nicole Simpson and is currently serving a sentence for armed robbery.
Although everyone thinks they know everything about Simpson because they watched American Crime Story: The People vs O.J, there are some aspects of his life that were not included in the show. Many people do not know that Simpson lost one of his children in a freak accident. His daughter Aaren was almost two years old when she drowned in her family's swimming pool in 1979.
Love him or hate him, guilty or innocent, there is no denying that Simpson suffered a terrible loss when his daughter passed away. Simpson also lost his second wife, although many still believe he did it, which is why we won't elaborate on him losing Nicole.
13 Mike Tyson
Mike Tyson is without a doubt one of the most badass people on the planet. The heavyweight champion is best known for biting off the ear of Evander Holyfield during a fight. However, this tough guy has endured the pain of losing a child, making him tougher than people think. In 2009, his four-year-old daughter Exodus tragically passed away. The child was found by her older brother Miguel, who was seven at the time. The young girl had passed away after getting tangled with the cord that was attached to a treadmill. A few weeks after her death, Tyson appeared on The Ellen Show and opened up about the loss of his baby girl, saying
“I was pretty outraged, torn apart. When I went to the hospital when she was on the machine, I was anticipating, because I was probably coming down from a hangover, but I'm anticipating that I'm going to go to the hospital and raise hell.Once I got there and saw other people who had children who already died or were dying, they were handling it with dignity and I didn't want to be the psycho parent, I wanted to handle it with dignity as well. Their kids were dying too so I didn't have any right to be a psycho. I just had to handle it like everyone else and be humble and be at ease.”
The Tyson family has remained strong since the loss of Exodus, however, she will eternally be missed
12 Dr. Dre
Dr. Dre ,whose real name is Andre Young, is a rapper, record producer and musical genius who rose to fame in the '80s. He became popular with the rap group N.W.A and has been a huge success ever since.
In 1994, he received his first four Grammy awards and also founded rap labels Death Row Records and Aftermath Entertainment, turning artists like Eminem and Snoop Dogg into the huge stars they are today. What many people do not know about Dre is that his son, Andre Young Jr, died at the age of 20.
The rapper's son passed away from a drug overdose and his body was found at his mother's home. At the time of his son's death, Dre asked for privacy, and he has been private about the matter ever since. He almost never publicly talks about the death of his son, perhaps because it is too painful.
11 Pierce Brosnan
Pierce Brosnan is an internationally known sex symbol. The handsome actor is best known for his role as James Bond. Brosnan has had immense success in his life, however he has also suffered some extreme loss.
In 1980, the actor married the beautiful Cassandra Harris, the pair were married for eleven years, then sadly, in 1991, Harris lost her battle to ovarian cancer. Harris left behind her daughter, Charlotte who Brosnan helped raise. Sadly, in 2013, Charlotte passed away at age 41, also from ovarian cancer.
Brosnan took the death of his daughter very hard, especially because her passing was reminiscent of that of her mother. The actor opened up about his feelings on death, saying “Dealing with death is there forever, really, you know, because we all have to face it."
Brosnan is a very strong man who has truly faced some of the hardest things any human can face. We commend him for being able to fight through the pain.
10 Sylvester Stallone
Sylvester Stallone is an American actor who is best known (obviously) for playing Rocky Balboa in the Rocky movies. He has also appeared in films such as Over the Top, Cliff Hanger, Cobra and his latest hit, Creed, which won him a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor. Stallone is one of those actors whose career you just can't help but admire. Stallone is an amazing actor, incredible mentor and even better father, which is why after 2012 when he tragically lost his son Sage, he was never the same.
Sage Stallone died at age 36. The cause of his death was said to be an atherosclerotic coronary artery disease. In simpler terms, the young Stallone died from a heart attack. Stallone has opened up about the pain of losing a child, saying “When a parent loses a child there is no greater pain. Therefore I am imploring people to respect my talented son’s memory and feel compassion for his loving mother Sasha. This agonizing loss will be felt for the rest of our lives. Sage was our first child and the centre of our universe and I am humbly begging for all to have my son’s memory and soul left in peace.”
9 Joe Biden
Joe Biden is a politician who earned himself the title of Vice President of The United States of America, which is obviously something to be proud of. Biden is a politician who understands the meaning behind loss and what pain really is. In 1972, the Vice President suffered the most painful loss imaginable when both his wife and daughter were killed in a car accident.
The two of them had been Christmas shopping and got into a crash on their way home. Biden was only 29 at the time and opened up saying that he can understand someone's thoughts on suicide, because he had gotten to such a low point in his life. The VP has two sons and has managed to stay strong and keep his family together all these years. Although he has accomplished so much since that horrible day in 1972, there is not a day that goes by that he doesn't think of his late wife and infant.
Sadly, on May 30th, 2015, tragedy struck the Biden family again, when son Beau Biden lost his battle to brain cancer. It is safe to say that Biden, although he accomplished a lot, he did not have the easiest life in terms of losing those he loves.
8 Vince Neil
Vince Neil lives and breathes heavy metal. For those of you who do not know who this man is (shame on you) Neil is the lead vocalist for the band Motley Crue. For those of you who do not know who Motley Crue is (seriously, shame on you), they are responsible for bringing songs like "Girls Girls Girls", "Kickstart my Heart" and "Home Sweet Home" into the world.
A lot of fans remember that in 1995, Neil suffered a terrible loss when his four-year-old daughter Skylar lost her battle against cancer. The singer took this loss extremely hard and decided to do something to keep his daughter's memory alive, starting the Skyler Neil Foundation that helps families that are experiencing the same struggles that his did.
After her death he went on to say, "This ordeal is something no parent should have to go through more than that, I wish no child ever had to go through it."
7 Roy Orbison
For those of you who don't recognize his name, we at TheRichest are certain you will recognize his music. Roy Orbison is an iconic figure in the music industry. With songs like "You got It", "Only the Lonely" and of course "Oh Pretty Woman", Orbison, also known as “The big O,” was a musical inspiration to many artists. Orbison was a talented lyricist with somewhat of a hopeless romantic mentality, saying things like "I close my eyes, then I drift away, into the magic night I softly say. A silent prayer, like dreamers do, then I fall asleep to dream my dreams of you."
Orbison had a great career but a pretty sad personal life. In 1966, Orbison's wife at the time Claudette Frady passed away. Two years after her death, in 1968, his two oldest sons Roy and Anthony were killed in a house fire. These events were without a doubt a turning point in the artist's career.
6 Willie Nelson
Willie Nelson is definitely one of a kind. The singer, songwriter, activist, author and stoner is also by far one of the coolest people to ever live. Nelson has had an amazing career and has countless fans and admirers worldwide. His life seems nothing short of amazing, however, like everyone else, Nelson has faced some tremendous loss in his life.
At the age of 33, his son Billy, who was going through financial problems, took his own life in their family's Tennessee cabin. Billy had battled emotional problems for years and Nelson did all he could to help his son, however it was not enough. Nelson is a believer in reincarnation and has even been quoted talking about his belief, saying “We've already been reincarnated about a million times, maybe. It doesn't make sense any other way.”
Right or wrong, Nelson has not been able to mask his hurt after losing his son. The singer does not speak publicly about the incident and would like fans to continue to respect his privacy on the matter.
5 Robert Plant
Led Zeppelin is one of the most badass bands to ever grace any stage. Robert Plant, who is known as the lead singer of the band, is quite the talent. They were defining rock and roll of their generation however in the mid-70s a curse came upon them that caused multiple setbacks which kept them from capitalizing on the momentum. Then, on July 26, 1977 while the band was on tour, Plant got the worst news of his life.
Plant's five-year-old son Karac had suddenly passed away due to a stomach virus. The band's tour manager Richard Cole spoke about phone calls between Plant and his wife that day saying, “The first phone call said his son was sick, and the second phone call, unfortunately, Karac had died in that time.”
Plants father said, “Karac was the apple of Robert’s eye; they idolized one another.” This terrible tragedy almost split the legendary group up, Plant went on to continue making music but we are certain life has never been the same for him since that phone call back in 1977.
4 Marie Osmond
Marie Osmond has been in show business all of her life. The actress, singer and doll designer is one of those celebrities that doesn't need an introduction because everybody knows who she is. Marie Osmond has always seemed like she had it all together. However, in 2010 tragedy struck this famous family when Osmond's son Micheal jumped off the 8th floor of a Los Angeles Apartment.
Micheal was 18 years old at the time of his passing and his mother was of course heartbroken by the situation. Micheal had a history of drug and substance abuse, but Osmond has openly said that there were no drugs found in his system at the time of his death.
Osmond opened up to Oprah about the death of her son saying "The particulars are…some things are so in stone, and other things are like a wave that comes in and out of your life. I've been through some tough things in my life, Oprah. This is probably the hardest thing."
3 Lea Michele
The beautiful actress Lea Michele met Cory Monteith on set of the hit television show Glee. Not only did they fall in love on screen, their romance bloomed off screen, making them one of television's most loved couples.
The 31-year-old Monteith was found dead on July 13th, 2013 in his hotel room in Vancouver. The cause of his death was said to be a “mixed drug toxicity," which left his friends, family and fans all in a state of shock.
Michele loved Monteith very much and is not afraid to talk about him. She has publicly spoken about his death and about the person he was to her, saying “I somehow feel the insane love Cory and I had for each other morphed into this strength that I have right now, there’s just something about knowing he’s watching everything I’m doing and feeling like I have to do everything now not just for me, but for him.”
2 John Travolta
John Travolta is a legend in the business. He has been in some of the most iconic movies such as Grease, Saturday Night Fever, Pulp Fiction and Face Off. In 1991, Travolta married actress Kelly Preston and the pair is still very much in love. Together, they brought three beautiful children into the world. However, in 2009 Travolta's world came crashing down when his 16-year-old son Jett passed away.
Jett, who was autistic, had a history of seizures which is what ultimately caused his death. Losing Jett was a life altering event for Travolta and Preston, but they have tried to remain a strong and united front. Preston has opened up and said, “Jett was autistic. He had seizures and when he was very young, he had Kawasaki Syndrome. I strongly believe as a mother, as does my husband, that there are certain contributing factors that lead to autism and some of it is very much the chemicals in our environment and in our food.”
1 Keanu Reeves
Keanu Reeves is known as one of the best actors of our generation. Best known for his roles in hit movies such as Constantine, The Lake House and The Matrix, Reeves seems like he has a perfect life. However, not many people remember the tremendous loss the actor went through.
When he was 23 years old, his best friend River Phoenix died of a drug overdose and it was Reeves' first big loss in his life. Then, in 1999, Reeves and girlfriend Jennifer Syme gave birth to a stillborn girl, Ava Archer Syme-Reeves. Losing his child was obviously big hardship that he faced, but 18 months later, he lost another important person in his life when Syme was killed in a car crash. These incidents truly impacted Reeves who in a past interview said,
“At the age of 23, my closest friend River Phoenix died of a drug overdose. In 1998, I met Jennifer Syme. We fell instantly in love and by 1999, Jennifer was pregnant with our daughter. Sadly, after eight months, our child was born stillborn. We were devastated by her death and it eventually ended our relationship. 18 months later, Jennifer died in a car accident. Since then I avoid serious relationships and having kids."
Reeves has never been married, nor has he ever had children.
