It’s the end of an era as the Playboy Mansion has been sold and the world is waiting to see what will become of the Playboy Empire and all the sex and scandals that came with it.
It’s been a question on everybody’s minds for many years now, as you couldn’t help but wonder what really went on inside the walls of the Playboy Mansion and if you’re anything like us – what the secret lives of the Playboy bunnies were all about.
Well, no need for your imagination now, and the wait is over. With a little help from the glorious internet, social media, and a few brave publications by former Playmates, we have an exclusive showcase to share with you featuring everything you could possibly think of when it comes to shocking secrets untold.
You’ve heard about the live-in girlfriends and know that the Mansion became synonymous with fantasy, A-List celebrity parties, and wild debauchery. What you don’t know is that the girls were all offered drugs freely, Bill Cosby has been alleged to have committed a crime within those very walls, and Hugh is an avid fan of Quaaludes.
Sure you’ve heard about the Girls Next Door featuring Holly, Bridget, and Kendra but did you know they had 9pm curfews or that Hugh Hefner once considered Kendra to be overweight? The founder of the world's most popular men's magazine has been keeping secrets and we’re about to lift the lid on them all and do the unspeakable as we feature 15 shocking Playboy Mansion rituals exposed. The Mansion is dirty in every sense of the word and we’re about to tell you why…
15 Hugh Took Viagra
Alright, alright so you could probably see this coming from a mile away. The well-known Playboy founder is a successful businessman, a Chicago native and a former World War II veteran. He’s also 90 so chances are he needs a little assistance when it comes to adventures in the bedroom.
Fast forward a few years and a few hundred women and it's known that Hugh is a firm believer in Viagra. He carries it around in a crumpled Kleenex tissue and his former girlfriends the Shannon twins claim he has lost some of his hearing due to his not-so-secret habit.
The original Playboy revealed he’s made a lot of notches in his bedpost over the years in an interview with Esquire magazine and confessed to sleeping with thousands of women over the years.
“How could I possibly know? Over a thousand, I’m sure,” Hefner revealed in the interview. “There were chunks of my life when I was married, and when I was married I never cheated. But I made up for it when I wasn’t married.”
14 Room with a View and a Tray
For former Playboy Playmate Izabella, the Mansion she called home was anything but glamorous. It was nothing like she imagined and after reading her tell-all autobiography Bunny Tales: Behind Closed Doors at the Playboy Mansion we tend to agree.
“Each bedroom had mismatched, random pieces of furniture" she writes. "It was as if someone had gone to a charity shop and bought the basics for each room. Old, stained bedding and mattresses, and marked, broken furniture reportedly occupy the house. A bedroom colour scheme of light pink walls and white carpets has taken decades of beating from the bunnies' designer dogs - who aren't allowed outside at night to relieve themselves.”
Former girlfriend and third cast member of E!’s reality show Girls Next Door, Holly Madison was just as unimpressed. Her approach to the Mansion décor and general cleanliness of the house brings shocking details to light. Lucky for us she detailed them in her memoir: “One of the most memorable mansion “touches” was the tray of Johnson’s Baby Oil, Vaseline, and Kleenex that was in every bathroom, in the grotto, and at the tennis courts and the pool bar,” Madison reveals. “I still don’t know whether to be disgusted or amused by those trays."
13 Hugh Hefner Enjoys Scrapbooking More Than Sex
Hugh Hefner enjoys scrapbooking more than sex. Well that’s the only conclusion one can come to when he has a collection of over 2,485 volumes of scrapbooks. Either that or the adult magazine editor would rather do anything else than engage in conversation or sit through interviews with the press.
It has been revealed that our dear Hef spent more than a decade working on his memoirs before abandoning them altogether. But he never once faltered on his scrapbooking and his impressive archive now features just about every single aspect of his life.
12 The Girls All Had A 9pm Curfew
Drugs are okay, sex and nudity are okay, but late nights are just scandalous in the Playboy Mansion. We discovered that Hugh demanded his girlfriends adhere to the 9 o'clock curfew he put in place.
Former girlfriend and author of Down the Rabbit Hole: Curious Adventures and Cautionary Tales of a Former Playboy Bunny, Holly Madison wrote: “Hef kicked his feet, mustered up some questionable crocodile tears (was he really crying? I thought), and told them if they wanted to 'stay out late' they could move out. Everyone had to be on the Mansion grounds by 9 pm every night — unless we were out with Hef at a club or a function. People honestly did not believe us when we told them we had a curfew.”
11 Heels For Wheels
It’s all about brand when it comes to being a Playmate in the Playboy Mansion. What you wore, how you conducted yourself in public, and the car you drove. Hugh Hefner was fixated on the idea of the girls being seen driving around town in luxury cars. In his mind it just further enhanced the Playboy brand.
If you drive a car, chances are you’re going to be the one that owns it, right? Not in the Playboy Mansion. The controlling magazine founder didn’t want to give the girls the independence of owning an expensive vehicle and the freedom it allowed them. Instead it was decided that each girlfriend would be leased a car that was fully paid for by the Hef for the duration that she stayed at the Mansion. If she left the Mansion the car would soon be on its way out as well.
10 Every Night Is A Pajama Party
Amongst the many rules and rituals that took place within the walls of the Playboy Mansion was Hugh’s desire for all his girlfriends to be dressed in identical pajamas. Pink flannel pajamas to be more specific as it became part of his bedtime routine.
Another blonde beauty who dared to break the rules and shake things up a bit with a tell-all book was former Playmate Jill Ann Spaulding. Her book is entitled Jill Ann: Upstairs and she wrote: “On sex night you go upstairs and the girls that are brand new, or the girls who don't have their own room yet, have to take a bath. That's a requirement. You also have to put on a certain pair of pink pajamas. They're all lined up and neat. You can tell they've been to the cleaners. They tell you to put them on, even though you take them off as soon as you enter Hef's room.”
If you’re sitting there thinking to yourself that the Playboy Mansion is all kinds of bizarre- trust us, you haven’t even heard the half of it yet!
9 The Playboy Mansion Weekly Schedule
If you think the Playboy Mansion was all about spontaneous living and loving then think again. Former playmate Izabella St. James’ tell-all of her time at the mansion revealed what the girls’ weekly schedule involved and we couldn’t help but share it:
Fun-In-The-Sun Sundays — A pool party and screening a new release in the Mansion movie theatre
Manly-Night Mondays — Hef’s friends came over for dinner and cards
Family-Night Tuesdays — Hef’s ex-wife and sons came over
Club-Night Wednesdays — Clubbing and the coming home for Hef’s bizarre sex ritual
Off-Night Thursdays — No planned activities
Club-Night Fridays — A repeat of Wednesday’s activities
Movie-Night Saturdays — A buffet dinner and a screening of an old movie in the Mansion theatre
8 Mansion Movie Nights
As you know, when you become one of the Playmates you have to adhere to a strict code of conduct and follow the rules set out by the Hef himself. At one point Hugh Hefner had seven girlfriends living with him at the mansion and we can guarantee you that they were not all happy. How could they be - they were never free to do what they wanted and were never even allowed to plan their own day.
Fun-In-The-Sun Sundays took place every week and involved a pool party followed by a screening featuring a new release in the Mansion movie theatre. Former Playmate Holly Madison revealed in her memoir that Hef would "Mansplain" movies. "During movie nights he would lean over to me to explain the plot lines and time periods in the most condescending of ways" Madison writes. Describing all her dialogue with Hef as "superficial" she said he refused to discuss books, politics, or current events with her.
7 Every Girl Gets A Photo
Another shocking Playboy Mansion ritual we discovered was that Hugh always kept a photo of every single girl who had ever been to the mansion. Just like clockwork a member of the staff at the Mansion would diligently take photographs of the various women visiting the infamous Mansion for the very first time.
Former Playmate Holly Madison goes on to reveal in her tell-all that the photos were inevitable, always Polaroids, and that the Hef enjoyed reviewing them the next day.
“He would label them A, B, or C (based primarily on their looks but also on how scantily clad they were) before having them catalogued in his social secretary’s office” Madison writes. Madison would eventually discover she received an “A.”
6 Hugh’s Bedroom Is A Mess
It’s one thing to say a room is untidy but another to go so far as to say mess. We’re saying Hugh Hefner’s bedroom is a mess and for this reason clocks in at number six on our list featuring the Top 15 shocking Playboy Mansion rituals exposed.
Former Playboy bunny Izabella St. James revealed in her book Bunny Tales: Behind Closed Doors at the Playboy Mansion, that even basic hygiene was a concept Hugh Hefner has yet to grasp.
“But then Hef was used to dirty carpets. The one in his bedroom had not been changed for years, and things became significantly worse when Holly Madison moved into his room with him as Girlfriend No. 1 soon after I moved in, bringing her two dogs.”
“They weren’t house-trained and would just do their business on the bedroom carpet. Late at night or in the early hours of the morning— if any of us visited Hef’s bedroom — we’d almost always end up standing in dog mess” she wrote.
“Everything in the Mansion felt old and stale, and Archie the house dog would regularly relieve himself on the hallway curtains, adding a powerful whiff of urine to the general scent of decay.”
5 The Weekly Allowance
If you think you’ve heard it all now then you’re in for another shocking ritual in the form of the Playboy Mansion Weekly Allowance.
The Playmates were given a $1,000 weekly “clothing allowance” and this could go towards their account at the Jose Eber Salon in Beverly Hills or having tailor-made items for their personal wardrobe. Saving the allowance or even using it for student loans was frowned upon. Former playmate Izabella St. James’ reveals in her tell-all about the weird ordeal:
"Every Friday morning we had to go to Hef's room, wait while he picked up all the dog poo off the carpet — and then ask for our allowance: a thousand dollars counted out in crisp hundred-dollar bills from a safe in one of his bookcases. We all hated this process. Hef would always use the occasion to bring up anything he wasn't happy about in the relationship. Most of the complaints were about the lack of harmony among the girlfriends — or your lack of sexual participation in the 'parties' he held in his bedroom. If we'd been out of town for any reason and missed one of the official 'going out' nights [when Hefner liked to parade his girls at nightclubs] he wouldn't want to give us the allowance. He used it as a weapon." —Izabella St. James in her book Bunny Tales: Behind Closed Doors at the Playboy Mansion.
4 No Side Boyfriends Allowed
If you’re in a committed monogamous relationship chances are you’re probably not allowed to date on the side. The Hef may have had anywhere between three and 15 girlfriends but he liked to keep things traditional.
There were no side boyfriends allowed, officially. Almost every Playmate past and present had one on the side. It has been said, however, that former girlfriend Bridget Marquardt followed the rule faithfully. Some Playmates have revealed this behavior: "Everyone thinks that the infamous metal gate was meant to keep people out. But I grew to feel it was meant to lock me in." —Holly Madison in her book Down the Rabbit Hole: Curious Adventures and Cautionary Tales of a Former Playboy Bunny.
In another revelation a Playmate said: “We were not allowed to have boys in the house. That was the absolute number one rule — no boys allowed. That was one of the main reasons we moved out" said former Playmate and girlfriend Karissa Shannon in an interview with PopEater magazine.
3 Bill Cosby Allegedly Molested A 15-Year-Old At The Mansion
Just when you think you know every detail and claim made regarding the ongoing sexual assault cases of Bill Cosby, there’s more. Bill Cosby allegedly molested a 15-year-old at the Playboy Mansion! In the midst of the numerous rape allegations around Bill Cosby concerning women being drugged with Quaaludes and then being sexually assaulted, the Playboy Mansion has been named as one of the locations of the crimes. A woman has come forward to say that the defamed actor attacked her 40 years ago while they were attending one of Hef’s parties at the house. Following the accusation coming to light, Hugh Hefner has been named in the sexual assault suit and has been accused of negligence and conspiracy.
It’s not the first time that claims have been made that there were Quaaludes freely available in the Mansion. Before mandatory club nights, Hef passed out Quaaludes to the girlfriends, former Playmate and ex-girlfriend Holly Madison claims. She confessed to being drunk in most encounters with the Hef but never said yes to the drugs.
"Quaaludes were supposed to give you a nice buzz. Hef told me once that they were meant to put girls in the mood for sex" wrote Izabella St. James in her book Bunny Tales: Behind Closed Doors at the Playboy Mansion.
2 Kids Stay For Free
So if you were hoping to hear shocking rituals and dirty little secrets about the notorious Playboy Mansion and all it entailed then you’ve come to the right place. Ranking in number two on the list is the fact that kids also stayed at the Playboy Mansion and even shared a room with one of the girls.
It has been revealed that the Hef had his sons: 9-year-old Marston and Cooper, aged ten, share a bedroom when former girlfriend Holly Madison first moved in. She later went on to become his #1 girlfriend and she joined him in the master bedroom.
Holly’s room was previously Bedroom Three and included three beds and a private bath. “Though they never stayed over when I was there, there were still toys scattered across the bedroom floor,” Madison writes, “which made for an incredibly odd and, frankly, creepy juxtaposition.”
1 Shocking Bedroom Rituals
It has always been a thing of mystery as to what goes on behind closed doors at the Playboy Mansion and after years and years of dancing around accusations we may have stumbled across the truth. Thanks to a few tell-all books from ex-girlfriends and a few legal suits we cannot help but believe that these wild accusations about group sex are real.
For one: "I didn't immediately realize that all girlfriends were required to sleep with Hef" Madison said. Though they publicly denied it, all girlfriends were expected to participate in Hef's bizarre group sex rituals.
The first time Madison was invited into the main bedroom, Hef’s group of girlfriends stood around the bed insinuating girl-on-girl action whilst Hugh proceeded to smoke a joint. Each girl then had a quick turn with him. “It was so brief that I can’t even recall what it felt like beyond having a heavy body on top of mine” Holly writes. A plaque on the front door of the house read "If You Don’t Swing, Don’t Ring" and evidently Hugh was a firm believer in this.
