Celebrities are often known for their looks. A lot of them launch their careers based on how beautiful they are, and it's part of their job to stay in shape. But just because they have access to all the best personal trainers, diet specialists, beauty experts, and plastic surgeons doesn't mean they will age flawlessly. For some of them, having surgeons at their beck and call hasn't kept them looking young at all-- it's actually made them look worse.
We all know aging is part of life, so we'll do what we can to age gracefully by focusing on our health. Some celebrities are less focused on staying healthy and more interested in taken advantage of all the opportunities to party that their lifestyle offers them. Drugs and alcohol would take a huge toll on anyone's appearance, so it's no surprise that aging rock and roll stars don't exactly look like they used to.
Whether it's plastic surgery, an unhealthy lifestyle, or they just don't care anymore, some celebrities are merely a caricature of their former beauty. Here are 15 celebs who aged terribly.

15 Val Kilmer
For an actor who has had the honor of playing Batman and Jim Morrison (the lead singer of The Doors) in his career, appearance has played a big role in Val Kilmer's success. A few years ago, he had gained a lot of weight, and was no longer the Hollywood heartthrob he used to be.
Now, he's reportedly battling throat cancer (although, he hasn't confirmed this himself), and he's looking a lot more frail. It was reported in February that his family is worried he isn't getting proper treatment because of his religious beliefs. Kilmer is a Christian Scientist and believes in the healing power of prayer rather than medical treatment.
14 Tara Reid
American Pie franchise regular, Tara Reid is no stranger to tabloid covers because of her haggard looking appearance. She used to be young and natural looking, but a few plastic surgery disasters (she admitted in 2006 that she had liposuction and a breast augmentation) have left her body looking a little deformed. But it isn't only plastic surgery gone wrong that have affected her looks.
Her hard partying (she went to rehab in 2008) caused weight fluctuations and skin problems. She's made a bit of a C-list comeback in the Sharknado franchise, and she turns 40 this year, so maybe she's learned her lesson about the pitfalls of plastic surgery.
13 Keith Richards
Looking at him now, it's hard to believe The Rolling Stone's lead guitarist, Keith Richards was ever desirable. Now 71, Richards is a rock legend, and was listed as number 4 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 100 Best Guitarists list. But all the hard partying, drugs, alcohol, and stressful world touring definitely took its toll on his looks.
He's been tried on drug related charges five times, and spent time in drug rehabilitation programs. In 2010, journalist Peter Hitchens wrote about Richards that he is “a capering streak of living gristle who ought to be exhibited as a warning to the young of what drugs can do to you even if you’re lucky enough not to choke on your own vomit.”
12 Carrie Fisher
The subject of many teenage boys' fantasies, Princess Leia, was played by Carrie Fisher in the original Star Wars trilogy from the 80s. She's 58 now, and set to reprise her iconic role in the forthcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens. But clearly, she won't be the same Princess Leia everyone remembers.
She has talked about her struggle with cocaine and prescription drug addiction, as well as dealing with bipolar disorder. She was a Jenny Craig spokesperson in 2011, and is working on leading a healthier lifestyle, so maybe it's only up hill from here.
11 Haley Joel Osment
You probably remember Haley Joel Osment as a cute 10-year-old in the 1999 film, The Sixth Sense. But now he's 27, and while he's still acting (he has a role in the Entourage movie), he definitely hasn't lived up to what was expected of him after he was nominated for an Oscar for his Sixth Sense role.
At least part of the reason has got to be that he didn't exactly age into a handsome adult. Some child stars just aren't meant to have a long career in show business.
10 Mischa Barton
Mischa Barton became a huge star when she was on The O.C. But she chose to leave the show early (they killed off her character, Marissa) so she could focus on a film career. Unfortunately, that didn't really happen.
Instead, she ended up partying too much, and was charged with a DUI in 2007. She also gained a lot of weight, causing people to ask what happened to the formerly petite "It Girl" of 2003.
9 Nick Nolte
You'd never guess that Academy Award-nominated actor, Nick Nolte, started out his career as a model. He was also named People magazine's sexiest man alive in 1992. He was arrested for driving under the influence in 2002, and has admitted to using GHB on a regular basis.
His legal troubles and drug use are what led to his now-infamous mug shot that had everyone wondering what happened to him.
8 Mark Hamill
The original Luke Skywalker, aka Mark Hamill, was considered a heartthrob in his time. But that was 30 years ago, and times have changed. Now 63-years-old, Hamil has aged quite a bit, including some weight gain. He was in a car accident in 1977 and he fractured his nose and cheekbone, which has clearly affected his appearance.
One positive is that he's aged naturally sans plastic surgery, so his looks aren't drastically different from how a regular non-celebrity might age. He's set to reprise his iconic role in the next Star Wars installment The Force Awakens, which has given him motivation to hit the gym and see a nutritionist.
7 Brigitte Bardot
Brigitte Bardot was one of the most well-known sex symbols of the 1950s and 60s. She started out in French films after her career as a ballerina didn't work out. After numerous films, a few awards, and worldwide fame, she chose to retire from acting in 1973 as a way to "get out elegantly".
Today, Bardot is 80 years old and living proof that just because you were once beautiful, doesn't mean you always will be. Old age gets us all eventually.
6 Axl Rose
Another example of a rock star who probably partied a little too hard during his heyday is Guns N' Roses lead singer, Axl Rose. But despite being around drugs and alcohol for most of his career, Rose made sure he never got addicted. He said, "I have a different physical constitution and different mindset about drugs than anybody I've known in Hollywood, because I don't abstain from doing drugs, but I won't allow myself to have a habit. I won't allow it."
He's also dealt with bipolar disorder and been on and off medication for that. But even though he was as responsible as he can be with drugs and alcohol, he still didn't age very well.
5 Janice Dickinson
Janice Dickinson has labeled herself the "world's first supermodel", but if you looked at her now, you'd never believe it was possible. Due to her hard partying, wild lifestyle, and experimentation with drugs during the height of her career, it was difficult for her to age gracefully like supermodels do today.
She's admitted to having a breast augmentation, a tummy tuck, and multiple face lifts. Despite what the drugs and surgeries have done to her looks, she claims to regret nothing. Sometimes having a good time is more important that looks.
4 Joan Van Ark
Needless to say, TV soap star, Joan Van Ark, did not choose to go the aging naturally route. She's had a lot of work done, and it clearly hasn't improved her appearance at all.
She's had a few too many facelifts, cheek implants, and lip injections, and instead of making her look younger, it's actually served to demonstrate that too much plastic surgery is a terrible idea.
Like most people who overdo it on plastic surgery, she's at the point where more surgeries aren't going to fix the damage that has already been done.
3 Pamela Anderson
Besides her obvious breast implants, Pamela Anderson was considered a natural beauty when she was younger. She was known for her role on Baywatch and as a Playboy playmate. After she married rocker Tommy Lee, her natural beauty started to fade a little bit with age and stress.
She announced in 2002 that she had contracted Hepatitis C, most likely from sharing needles. She's always been a party animal which shows in her choice of boyfriends (Kid Rock and Bret Michaels, to name a few). But these days she's ditched the high maintenance look and is embracing her age.
2 Mickey Rourke
Mickey Rourke used to have looks worthy of leading man status, but he chose to leave acting for awhile and return to his boxing roots. Obviously getting punched in the face every day isn't going to be good for your appearance.
When he made his Hollywood comeback, he was looking a little bit different, to say the least. He made no secret of the fact that he had undergone plastic surgery to fix the damage boxing had done. But he claims his original doctor did a terrible job, and he's been trying to fix it ever since. Luckily for him, his appearance lent itself well to his role in The Wrestler, which he won a Golden Globe for in 2008.
1 Lindsay Lohan
Former teen queen, Lindsay Lohan has had a rough few years. Since starring in the hit movie Mean Girls in 2004, she's been in and out of rehab dealing with alcohol and drug addiction, arrested for DUI's and spent some time in jail. Her appearance has changed drastically from that of a healthy young woman to one of an aging drug addict.
These days she's working on getting her career back, but we can't help but notice that she has a reputation for photoshopping her Instagram pictures. She's probably more likely to be a movie star again than she is to get her looks back.
