Marijuana legislation is in a state of flux right now all around the world, but especially in the U.S.
Colorado was the first state to legalize the use of recreational marijuana in 2012. Other states are following suit one by one. You can even smell people smoking marijuana in the illustrious streets of Washington D.C., the nation's capital. But of course, whether recreational use of drugs is legal or not, it doesn't really stop a lot of people from using them, celebrities included. Nowadays, with a little discretion, smoking pot seems no worse than drinking alcohol.
Some celebrities, like Rihanna and Miley Cyrus, aren't shy about their love of smoking weed. Others would rather keep their drug habits private. But as we all know, it isn't easy for celebrities to keep secrets. Weed is pretty mainstream and accepted compared to a lot of other drugs, and it's only going to become more so in the next few years. Anyone from a teenager, to a middle aged mom, to someone's grandpa could smoke weed every once in a while, and you'd probably have no idea. Here are 10 celebrities you wouldn't expect to be into getting high.
Madonna has been an integral part of the music industry for over three decades. She's a master at pushing the envelope and reinventing herself, and her shows are known for being elaborate and physically grueling. Probably not the type of person you'd think smokes a lot of pot, right? But during an appearance on David Letterman in 2009, Madonna talked to the host about another appearance back in 1994 where she acted uncharacteristically aggressive and dropped a bunch of F-bombs. When Letterman suggested she was just excited to see him, Madonna disagreed, saying "It wasn't because I was excited about you. I think it may have had something to do with the joint I smoked before I came on." Clearly Madonna is one of those rare people who seems to have even more energy when she's high.
9 Jennifer Aniston
Even since she played Rachel Green in friends, Jennifer Aniston has been known as "the girl next door" type. But she's a girl next door who enjoys the occasional joint. When she was still married to Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston revealed to Rolling Stone magazine that she enjoyed smoking weed. "I enjoy it once in a while," she said. "There is nothing wrong with that. Everything in moderation. I wouldn't call myself a pot-head." Brad Pitt has also admitted more recently that he used to smoke a lot of weed, especially while he was married to Aniston. But he told the Hollywood Reporter that he quit because he was "getting irritated" with himself and his laziness.
8 Louis Tomlinson
Louis Tomlinson is a member of One Direction, a boy band who's target audience is primarily pre-teen and teenage girls. That means he's probably supposed to be setting a good example by being responsible and saying no to drugs. But being a 24-year-old guy in a world where smoking weed is becoming more and more accepted means he probably indulges every now and then. A video came out in 2014 that showed Louis and former 1D member Zayn Malik talking and smoking a joint. Fellow band member Liam Payne apologized for the video, saying they are still young and they make mistakes. But chances are, most of their young fans weren't surprised to find out their favourite boy band smokes weed sometimes.
7 Cameron Diaz
In her younger days, Cameron Diaz had a wholesome image, but these days she's more interested in being real than being what people expect. In one interview, Cameron Diaz admitted that she bought weed from Snoop Dogg when they were both in high school. "I was green even in high school!" she said. She has a few other public connections to marijuana. For example, she dated fellow pot-lover, Justin Timberlake for three years, and she also co-starred with him in the film Bad Teacher, where she played a high school teacher who wasn't shy about her love of pot. There are also a few tabloid pictures out there of her sharing a joint with her good friend Drew Barrymore.
6 Sarah Silverman
Stand-up comedian, Sarah Silverman has said she doesn't drink because alcohol makes her feel sick, but she doesn't have the same problem with marijuana. She even openly flaunted a weed vaporizer pen on the red carpet at the 2014 Emmy Awards. She won an Emmy that night for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special for her special, Sarah Silverman: We Are Miracles. In one interview, she also talked to Conan O'Brien about eating an edible marijuana treat with her step mother, and seeing her dad take a hit from a bong. Silverman also appeared on the popular web series "My Drunk Kitchen" with Hannah Hart where guests get drunk and try to cook, but instead, she got high and made veggie pot pie.
5 Kirsten Dunst
Kirsten Dunst was a child star before starring in movies like Bring It On and Spider-man. She didn't really go down the hard-partying path that many child stars do, but she said "I drink moderately, I've tried drugs. I do like weed. I have a different outlook on marijuana than America does. I've never been a major smoker, but I think America's view on weed is ridiculous. I mean - are you kidding me? If everyone smoked weed, the world would be a better place." But in 2010, at a trial for a man who stole her purse out of her hotel room, she testified that she didn't smoke pot. The man claimed he was there to sell drugs to her, but Dunst claimed it was her personal assistant, not her, who was the pot smoker.
4 Morgan Freeman
78-year-old Morgan Freeman is an Academy Award-winning actor for his role in Million Dollar Baby, and he's been in plenty of other popular movies such as The Dark Knight, The Shawshank Redemption and Se7en. He also has four grandchildren. But that doesn't mean he can't smoke weed every once in awhile, does it? In an interview with The Daily Beast, Freeman said he supports the movement to legalize pot because it has many uses, unlike alcohol. "My first wife got me into it many years ago. How do I take it? However it comes! I'll eat it, drink it, smoke it, snort it!" He revealed. He uses it for pain management for his fibromyalgia, and he wholeheartedly believes it helps with other health problems as well.
3 George Clooney
George Clooney always appears extremely put together and classy. He also has a reputation for being laid back and low key. He's obviously one of the most well-known and successful actors in Hollywood and people often wonder if he might go into politics. If he does, he'll definitely be an advocate for the legalization of marijuana, although he's never publicly said so. When he was filming Ocean's Twelve in Amsterdam, Clooney was reportedly a regular customer at a local cannabis cafe. The owner said that Clooney actually comes in a few times a year. Obviously, being one of the most successful actors in Hollywood, regularly smoking weed hasn't hindered his career much.
2 Frances McDormand
Academy Award-winning actress 58-year-old Frances McDormand isn't shy about the fact that she's a recreational pot smoker. She was on the cover of High Times magazine in 2003, and she said "Woody Harrelson has a political agenda. I'm here because I think it's a lot of fun! Because it’s not a constant in my life, I don’t say it should be made legal so it’s more available. But from a medical point of view—I have friends who need to use it—why should they have to look too hard for the thing that makes them better? So from that point of view, it’s like, ‘Please, what is the problem?’” She's one of the rare actresses to have won an Oscar, a Tony, and an Emmy for acting, so clearly smoking pot and being open about it hasn't affected her career in a negative way.
1 Charlize Theron
Charlize Theron is an Oscar winner, an A-lister, and a generally classy, well spoken, and intelligent woman. She may not be out there publicly advocating for the legalization of marijuana, but most people who one smoke it one in awhile aren't. In 2001, The National Enquirer published photos of Charlize Theron smoking out of a pipe made from an apple at a party. That makes her one of those relatable, everyday day pot smokers that knows how to make a pipe out of whatever might be available. She never confirmed whether she was smoking weed, or what her thoughts on marijuana are, but chances are that wasn't her first and only time getting high. She recently dated Sean Penn, who played iconic stoner Spicoli in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. So maybe their interest in pot is the one thing they had in common.
