Authority figures, hard work, a nurturing nature, being physically fit- there seems to be a few common denominators when it comes to what men stereotypically find to be a sexy career for a woman to have. Besides these things though, a woman who has her own career and can live with or without you is of course appealing. Having her own hobbies in life, as well as a passion for something, is very sexy too.
Automatically, things like "Sexy Nurse" or "Sexy Flight Attendant" come to mind, but these are Halloween costumes; there is no real job prefaced by "Sexy" (that I know of, at least). But the sexy this-or-that Halloween costume craze is a good indicator of career stereotypes, if anything. It should be noted, however, that not every sexy job Halloween costume is actually a real job- for example, Cavewoman and Kitty Cat are not real jobs, sexy or otherwise.
But for those costumes that do have real-life counterparts, like the aforementioned nurse and flight attendant, Halloween costumes have little in common (if anything) with the real world versions. For example, a nurse wears scrubs, a la the sitcom Scrubs, which is closer to reality but still quite fictional. They do not wear skimpy skirts, fishnet stockings, heels, or heavy makeup. Likewise, flight attendants wear varying uniforms, but their slacks, jackets, blouses, and knee-length (at the shortest) skirts are nothing like the sleazy outfits that abound on the one night of the year it is not frowned upon to "ho it up-" October 31.
I have narrowed the vast numbers of different careers available to women to the 15 that I believe are the most stereotypically "sexy" to men. Keep reading to see what they are, including and beyond the obvious ones we all already know about.
A nanny cares for little ones, protecting, feeding, teaching, loving, and cuddling them as if they were her own. There is something so soft and tender about watching a woman with children, regardless if they are her own or not. Maybe it goes back to the men-wanting-a-mommy thing, but I think the nurturing aspect speaks to men's evolutionary desire to be with a woman who is good with children. Especially, seeing a woman with a baby can stir up those feelings, whether or not a guy is ready for kids himself. Being a nanny may not be one of the tough physical jobs on this list (though to be clear, babies and children are physically demanding- very much so- just not in the traditional sense people think of), or one of the overtly sexy ones, but being a nanny is hot in its own right. The traditionally feminine qualities of gentleness and caring are embodied in nannies. Plus, they are often young college students, which helps. And of course, they are great at playing!
Obviously models require one attribute: attractiveness. Well, technically they have to have other qualities like experience and training, especially for the runway or other specialized areas of the field. And usually, models are very tall and very thin. They do not have to be, but that is the stereotype, especially in the high fashion world. But models can model anything really, from footwear to jewelry to nail colors and more. Therefore they can look like anything, if you think about it. But since we are operating under the assumption that men find models sexy (duh), we will go with the notion that most of the time, models are tall and skinny. Hey, some guys like their women to tower over them and be a stick. To each their own!
A side thought before moving on: it just occurred to me that really, a model is one sexy career that is not an outfit for Halloween- I mean, how could it be, unless you are specifically impersonating a well-known model that everyone would know? And actually, I cannot even think of one...
12 Flight Attendant
This one is a no-brainer. It is one of the first jobs you think of when thinking of "sexy" careers. Flight attendants have long held a spot on lists like these, probably because of their uniforms, which have traditionally been thought of as sexy. Men imagine petite women (you have to be a certain size to be hired by most airlines, meaning over a designated height, and under a designated weight) who serve them, essentially glorified waitresses, which is how some flight attendants jokingly describe themselves.
Men also imagine uniforms that are not realistic- those made up of short skirts, low-cut blouses, and high heels. For several reasons this is not realistic (or safe). For one thing, no one could safely walk on a plane mid-air in heels. They wear flats or pumps. They do wear blouses, but usually cleavage is frowned upon, and usually it is under a blazer of some sort or with a scarf that would cover any cleavage, anyway. And the skirts? To the knee, though some are slitted (a little). But it's OK, guys, they do wear nylons (dark or skin-tone)- that is, if they are not donning perfectly-pressed slacks. Sorry!
And then we have the nurse, likely the most stereotypically sexy profession for a woman of them all. It is strange when you think about it, since nurses notoriously do the gross jobs like cleaning up blood stains, mopping up urine on the floor, emptying bed pans, and checking rectums. Fun! And they do it all while wearing loose-fitting scrubs the likes of winter pajama (many with patterns of kittens or kitchen utensils or random swirly designs or symbols of whatever holiday is nearest- hot!).
Halloween has done nothing for the nurse, who is put on a pedestal in terms of hotness, but then when you go to the hospital you are undoubtedly disappointed with good ol' Betty, who, like many nurses, is not even young but surprisingly old (at least she knows what she's doing when it comes to that rectal exam we were just poking fun at her for- oooh, poking, no pun intended). Maybe it is the caretaker thing that makes guys overlook the reality of how sexy nursing really is, since they all seem to be looking to date their mommies. Sigh.
10 Personal Trainer
Another obvious choice is the personal trainer. They are for the most part attractive in that they are physically fit. If they are not, they would not (and should not) be a personal trainer advising others on how to be fit. Personal trainers work individually with those hoping to slim down, beef up, or just develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle. They know about nutrition, exercise, and the human body. What is not to love about that?
Men who love personal trainers would benefit from their knowledge of these subjects, as well as from having a workout buddy, spotter, and someone to hold them accountable for keeping up with that exercise regimen. Plus, there is the whole image of the woman you are dating breathing hard, glistening with sweat in a sports bra and cheek-hugging shorts, and giving you a run for your money in the weight room. Last but not least, fit people are happy people, and since endorphins are released when you work out, personal trainers are sure to be a positive presence in your life!
A dancer is another physically demanding job sure to keep your girl in shape. There are many kinds of dancers out there- ballerinas, modern dancers, dance teachers, etc. Besides being fit- anywhere from slim and lithe to athletic and muscular, or somewhere in between- dancers possess a certain discipline that is quite attractive. They are hard workers who have a passion for what they do, and that is hot!
Ballerinas especially are a little something different- they are elegant, poised, flexible, and graceful. To watch a ballerina perform can be mesmerizing, and well, if you are lucky enough to date one, her career may fast become the absolute sexiest one you can think of. Many smoldering celebrities were ballerinas first, and I bet you once you find out who they are (Mila Kunis, Natalie Portman, Charlize Theron, and Zoe Saldana, to name a few) they will be even hotter in your eyes.
Just as it is said that women date their fathers, so are men looking for their mothers. I mean this in the way that they inherently would like someone who cooks, cleans, and all-around takes care of them. Not all men, of course, but a good majority of them. And there is nothing wrong with this. Women are naturally predisposed to these things, just as men are predisposed to be stronger and thus do more physical labor. Anyway, to get back on point, a waitress serves food and alcohol, and often they look pretty good doing it.
Behind the scenes there is more to the story, though- think a lot of grease, a hot kitchen, running around in tennis shoes for 12 hours straight, and scraping people's old food off their plates, and after you do, tossing it in a bucket full of dirty water with food scraps and sauces floating about and it then splashes in your face. Yeah. Not so sexy now, huh? But some waitresses have it better, and once you are a cocktail waitress (a position that often comes with a cuter outfit) or a bartender, well that is much closer to the fantasy. And who doesn't love the person who crafts your cocktail and pours your beer? Sometimes they even flip the bottles, a unique (and surprisingly difficult) talent.
7 Yoga Instructor
Oh, the poses. Oh, the flexibility! Personally, I look at some of the yoga poses and cringe just from the thought of bending that way, but all the power to them. Yoga can be done by anyone of course, but more women practice the ancient form of strength-building than do men. This is probably because women are naturally more flexible. A yoga instructor is the best because she combines athleticism and education, a different kind of teacher entirely. The love of her sport (if you can call it that) is endearing, as well.
Men who think yoga instructors are hot would do well to date one because they would learn a lot, gain strength and agility, and have a great view while doing so! Hopefully the awkward poses and the initial pain would be worth it... I am sure it would; who doesn't love an uber-bendy partner, am I right? Oh, and now hot yoga is becoming big. Hot yoga is exactly what it sounds like- yoga practiced in humid conditions. Now the yoga instructor is bendy and glistening. Nice!
An athlete is usually attractive because of all the workouts and practice they endure to excel at their preferred sport. Many athletes, whether they go on to be a professional or teach at a high school or give it up entirely for whatever reason, have loved and worked at their sport since they were little children. It could be soccer or basketball or karate or track or anything in between, but athletes always have a physical job to do.
For women more often than men, their sports could include things like cheering, dance, ice-skating, and gymnastics. Men do these sports too, but they are traditionally dominated by women. These women are dedicated and hardworking, which is attractive in itself, but so is strength... and the little outfits that can accompany many "women's" sports (and of course once more the "glistening").
This one is a given, no? I mean, what guy hasn't fantasized about a naughty teacher at some point in their lives? Maybe it is the authority thing, like I mentioned before, or that they are seen as nurturing, especially to children, but who knows? Teachers can be sexy to their students, like so many boys I knew in high school and middle school, but simply being a teacher is attractive even to those who are not their pupils.
By this I mean that a man may find a woman appealing if she teaches younger children as well, or older students like at a university (where she could also have students drooling over her). There is just something about a teacher, I think, no matter the admirer's age and regardless if he is a student or not.
Who doesn't love a woman who can stand her ground, stand up for what she believes in, and argue to the death? Well, maybe not that last one, but you get the idea. Lawyers are tough, and they are smart. They are also resourceful and clever, all attractive qualities when it comes to personality. But they are also physically appealing- pencil skirts, open blouses, stiletto heels, maybe some nerd glasses...
It is a nice thought, and I'm sure there are some lawyers who are this picture of sexiness. But the reality is that most lawyers are older, stuffy, and focus more on their cases (as they should) than their image. Plus, they are so busy that they likely do not have time for things like perfectly manicured nails (though they definitely have the money to keep up with details like that!) Finally, no one wants to stand in a courtroom all day in stilettos. Come on. Still, that does not stop men from thinking that they do. Ah, let them dream.
Like a teacher, a student is also highly fantasized about. Usually (and hopefully...) the student is the one crushing on the teacher, and not the other way around. But anyone could think a student is a hot, not just a teacher. So for those guys out there that are taken by the thought of a young college girl, I am thinking it is the rebellious phase of life that intrigues you. College girls party, experiment, sleep around, and often do as they damn well please.
But on the flip-side, they are studious and hardworking. They are full of hope for the future, yet unsure of what it will bring. This strange mix of hesitancy and bright-eyed wonder, coupled with that age-old rebellion and, let's be honest, a tight, young bod, makes the student an obvious choice for a sexy "job" (hey, you can write "student" on the employment line of any form and it's accepted, no questions asked).
An anchorwoman is well-spoken, charming, and expected (like a few others on this list) to look nice and well put-together all the time. She is a representative of the community and her network, and is thus generally poised and on her best behavior. There is something to be said for a goody-two-shoes of sorts, is there not? And besides all that, an anchorwoman is kind of famous, depending on your location. People like journalist Savannah Guthrie of NBC news' The Today Show is a nationally recognizable face, but even anchors from smaller cities are bound to be recognized around town.
And it is only natural to want to be alongside a pretty, famous, successful woman who is a news anchor. This career also requires the ability to work on short notice, perhaps some mobility, knowledge of current affairs, and being able to analyze those affairs in a way that is thought-provoking and insightful. A unique skill set is needed to become an anchorwoman, but the lady that has it is a gem!
Policewomen are in control, and get the job done (plus, there are the handcuffs!). They have a serious and dangerous job to do, and that job is priority number 1 because lives could be at stake. It is precisely that level of seriousness that makes a policewoman's career one of the hottest. Like many before this, the hard work, dedication, and even the aspect of care-taking involved in being an officer of the law all work together to create an appealing fantasy.
Women in law enforcement are tough, but they do the risky job out of love for people, and wanting to protect them. All of this is very attractive, of course, but so is the fact that they could take a grown man down! Some men also appreciate a woman who can shoot a gun and take care of herself. Then again, they do like to come to the rescue, a typical knight-in-shining-armor/damsel-in-distress type thing, so who knows?
This one embraces everything- knowledge, success, hard work, passion, care-taking, and pretty much everything else anyone could ever ask for from a career. Doctors are notorious for long hours and the crazy amount of schooling they had to endure in order to have those long hours. This means that no one who does not really want to do it, does it. Doctors are sexy for all of these reasons and more, and the good thing is that men's fantasy about them is likely more accurate than for all of the other jobs on this list, because the realities of the job are universally known already, but unlike nurses who wear something oh-so different than the fantasy, doctors wear white coats over whatever they want.
Yes, they wear scrubs for surgery, but otherwise they wear classy, nice clothing and a lab coat on top. There are plenty of attractive female doctors who actually do wear heels to work, and a skirt. And often, the white coat (a symbol of authority and knowledge) adds to the sexiness because of what it represents. A stethoscope hanging around the neck is just the icing on the cake. But fundamentally, doctors are the sexiest women around not because of anything physical, but because no matter what kind of doctor they are (pediatrician, OB/GYN, physical therapist, plastic surgeon, etc.) they literally hold lives in their hands. They save lives, bring them into the world, and keep them going until it is no longer possible. I can think of nothing more attractive.
