Hollywood sure has a way of packaging old ideas and selling it to the public. Not to say there’s anything wrong with that-- but let’s be honest, remakes and sequels are often hit or miss. The reimagining of a story already told is an art form that many cannot follow through with. How many movies have you seen that just butchered the original? Or couldn’t even come close to it with a ten-foot pole, that’s how shoddy it was. But despite getting all those crappy sequels or trilogies (I’m looking at you Twilight!) the fans still want to see more. They want to see their favorite characters and storylines live on and hey, it doesn’t hurt to check in every once in awhile. But just because there’s potential for the next installment, does it mean we should pursue the story? Well, that’s what we’re here to talk about today.
Most movies should never have sequels, like Speed 2: Cruise Control or Grease 2- those were total train wrecks. And don’t even get me started on Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights. That movie is an abomination in and of itself. But that’s beside the point because every so often we get a movie that we love so much we just wish it had a follow up. Now, who’s to say if the following list would turn out to be best sellers at the box office, but we want to see them nonetheless.
Here’s a list of the most wanted movie sequels according to both the internet and myself. Some of these might have a sequel or remake in the works, but who knows if they’ll ever come to fruition. So let’s get to it!
Remember being a kid and desperately wanting to say Beetlejuice three times but having an irrational fear that it might actually bring that vile, hilarious menace to life? Yeah, you and me both. This movie, which was a masterpiece by the one and only Tim Burton, starred an extra pale and emo looking Winona Ryder (who danced her way into our hearts) and Michael Keaton, who well, wormed his way in there too. No really, literal worms were coming out of his skull. Back in 2015 (I act like that was such a long time ago, ha), Variety reported that Beetlejuice 2 was happening and While Warner Bros. haven’t officially greenlit this sequel, fans around the world are hopeful that Burton’s confidence in a sequel means it’s actually going to happen. There’s nothing more disappointing than someone telling you something is coming and then-- it doesn't. I need to know what happens- how are the Maitland’s doing? Is Lydia’s mom still turning out obscure and crappy artwork? These are questions I need answered, and I hope are answered with a sequel. So let’s shake, shake, shake, Señora and make this sequel a reality!
12 The Goonies
Goonies never say die! And they also never got a sequel so now would be the perfect time to catch up with these zany, inventive, and brave kids who undoubtedly are all grown up with kids of their own. How awesome would it be to rejoin the Goonies gang and their children can pick up where they left off-- or maybe go on a new adventure and their parents can be at the helm of the madness? Sorry, I’m getting super-passionate about the possibilities for this movie to have a sequel. This long-anticipated follow-up has been on our minds since the movie came out back in 1985-- okay, I wasn’t born yet, but I assure you that when I got around to watching it at the ripe age of ten I definitely wanted to see another one! Luckily, we might not have to wait that much longer. In September 2015, USA Today reported that Actor Sean Astin said “it’s not a question of if, but rather of when the sequel gets made.” Well, we hope it gets made sooner rather than later and of course we want to see the original cast in it! Truffle shuffle for all my Goonies out there anyone?
You can’t go wrong when you mix Billy Bob Thornton, Bruce Willis, and Ben Affleck together trying to save the world. I mean, come on! Let's see them drill into the surface of the Earth and set off some nuclear bomb that we hope will save us! This movie had mission, it had purpose and sure, the Earth is bound to get itself into some more trouble down the road, so a sequel is totally plausible. Asteroids can hit more than once, no? Ha.
10 Mrs. Doubtfire
Ever since we lost Robin Williams, I think this sequel gets further and further away from actually happening. There was a very high chance of having one, but since the star's passing that dream is probably dead. But just because it might not become a reality, there’s no denying that this story needed a sequel. Its legacy is pretty much set but we’d love to see what’s going on with Daniel Hillard, his colorful brother Frank and of course Miranda and the children. Did dad hold his job at the network playing Mrs. Doubtfire, teaching the youth of America the do’s and don’t’s of life? Did Daniel and Miranda ever get back together? How’s Pierce Brosnan doing and did his character ever get that car fixed? At least we have the original to keep us warm and giggling!
‘Santa! I know him!’ Yes, Buddy, we know you know him. Come on, if this movie isn’t on your list of most wanted movie sequels then I don’t know what you’re doing with your life. Will Ferrell is completely hilarious in this movie about a human being raised by Elves in Santa’s workshop, learning that he’s a human and embarking upon a journey to find his father. Okay, stay with me... This movie is so funny, it’ll make you want to eat Spaghetti and Pop Tarts and chocolate syrup all in one sitting. If anything, it could totally flop and we’d still be okay with it. Just give us more Buddy and his pizazz to save Christmas.
8 The Breakfast Club
Five high school students from different walks of life stuck in detention for a whole Saturday under the reign of a power-hungry principal? Um... yes please! Whether this is a remake or a reimagining, I think that getting to see this story unfold again would be totally awesome. You have the rebel, the brain, the outcast, the princess and the jock. It’s a recipe for disaster- or perhaps the start of a budding friendship! We learn each of these people’s story, and we find that people aren’t always what they seem and not to judge a book by its cover- or the company it keeps, for that matter. In a world where being different is bad and sticking to the norm is good why not show today’s generation that even under the most awkward, annoying circumstances, people who are different and might not seem to have anything in common can come together and be pals! At least in detention. Haha.
7 Age of Adaline
Okay, hear me out. Not your typical movie that might be on this list but I think it’s worth a sequel. This movie stars Blake Lively and follows a woman who… yep, you’ve got it, doesn’t age. Like ever. You’d think that would be the best thing in the world- to stay young forever just going about your business and having the time of your life… Wrong! Adaline Bowman has been twenty-nine for the last eight decades and you could imagine all the people she could have loved and lost over that time. She can’t let anyone discover her secret so she’s forced to keep her distance from everyone which means she can’t get close to anyone… bummer. I don’t want to spoil the movie for everyone, but after Adaline meets a man named Ellis, something is awoken inside of her and her love and passion returns. But when she meets his parents, something seems all too familiar and her secret could be expose, leaving Adaline in a pretty uncomfortable position. I would love to see the aftermath of the decision she makes that changes her life forever.
6 Inside Out
This Pixar movie seemed a tad bit unconventional for a children’s movie, showcasing a child’s emotions while she goes through a tough time in her life, but it was innovative and heartwarming to say the least. And it was widely popular too! In the movie we get an inside look at the mind of Riley, a happy eleven-year-old Midwestern girl who has her world rocked when she and her parents have to move to San Francisco for her father's job. This life-changing event thrusts us into the "Headquarters" of her mind, where emotions like Anger, Fear, Joy and Disgust are all at work to make sure Riley has a good life and can deal with her trials and tribulations. Although the movie is pretty sad and takes us on an emotional rollercoaster, I think it was an important movie to show children (and adults) what it might be like to deal with such monumental things and to better understand how feelings work. I would love to see a grown-up Riley and the emotions swirling in her head when she has a child of her own… who knows, maybe Riley’s kid will be just like her and will love hockey too. Let’s make it happen. Pixar- I’m counting on you!
This groundbreaking movie about Therese and Carol’s journey and essentially their love story, is one that needs to be continued. Rooney Mara and the incomparable Cate Blanchett star in this breathtakingly beautiful story about how two women develop a fast bond in 1950’s Manhattan. Though there are complicated consequences when it comes to romantic love between two women in that time period, I think that it would be wonderful to see how these two continue their story. This movie was highly acclaimed by the press and highlights our modern culture where a film about lesbians could catapult to mainstream media. I think it’s the perfect time to follow-up and do a deeper dive into this timely love story.
Anything Amy Schumer-related I want to see more of. She’s hot, hot, hot, and her stuff is in, in, in, right now! This movie had me in tears and laughing my ass off the entire time. It follows a commitment-phobe who is quite honestly a hot mess, but you can relate to it so well it’s scary. I think we need to see another installment of this, whether it’s her living happily ever after with the man of her dreams, or just playing Mom to some rugrat she never thought she wanted. Just give me more Schumer and give me more now!
I’m not even going to attempt to describe this one because years later my mind is still blown at the developments within this movie. Or is that within, within this movie? Ahhh, Leo DiCaprio does not disappoint and it’s a mind-bender for sure. Maybe a head-scratcher is a better descriptor but amazing nonetheless. There’s endless possibilities for this sequel and I think it would be worth a second installment.
Does anyone not like this movie? Because if you don’t like it-- are you even real? I don’t think I can trust you… you might be certifiable. This hilarious movie stars some top comedic talent such as Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, and Melissa McCarthy and is a staple for every single Girls' Night out there! It’s up, it’s down, it’s all around hilarious. Unfortunately, back in 2013, Kristen Wiig told EW that she turned down Bridesmaids 2 saying “We knew during the first one, this was it. We would have made a lot of money if there was a second one, but that’s not my goal in my creative life.” Even though there’s absolutely no way this talented lady is changing her mind… we still want more of it!
James Cameron sure knows how to make good movies, and this one was phenomenal! Love, new worlds, new species, battle for survival… how can you go wrong? This was probably one of the most visually stimulating and satisfying movies to come out in the last decade. And by golly, we would love to see what’s going on with Jake Sully and his Na'vi woman! Oh, and we want to make sure that the poisonous world is, you know, not taking all these lives. The Verge recently reported that Avatar 2 wouldn’t be coming out in 2017 after all… say what? Disappointed fans around the world unite! Although we might have to wait a bit longer to see the story continue at least we can take solace in knowing that in the next few years we might be able to revisit this world and have a blast.
