So unless you have been living under a rock as of late you have probably heard a bit about Kesha. She was born in Nashville under the name of Kesha Rose Sebert, and she used to go by the name Ke$ha. She first came to prominence when she sang on Flo Rida's single "Right Round." Then her debut solo single "Tik Tok" topped the Billboard Hot 100 for nine weeks, and her debut album Animal went platinum. She is also responsible for the hook to Pitbull's 2013 single "Timber."
But that isn't why she is really famous right now. Why she is really all over the news is because she is trying to get out of her contract with Sony, and her producer, who goes by Dr. Luke, because according to a lawsuit she filed he had "sexually, physically, verbally, and emotionally abused Ms. Sebert to the point where Ms. Sebert nearly lost her life," all in the service of his being able to "maintain complete control over her life and career."
Well, that sounds kind of serious. This is all going to play out in the media soon, and in a big way. Until it does here's some background on Kesha. This is TheRichest's 15 Things You Don't Know About Kesha.
15 The Cash Sign in Her Name Was Ironic
Kesha used to have a dollar sign in the middle of her name but got rid of it. Why did she have it? It was “Totally ironic, I was being a little b*tch about the fact I didn’t make any money off the Flo Rida song." You remember, the one called "Right Round." Yep, Kesha not only did not make any money off that song, she also wasn't even credited for it. Stay in school kids. Or at least get a good lawyer. Well, Kesha has a good lawyer now, but it may be a little too late.
14 She Knows Paris Hilton
Her family appeared on the old MTV show called The Simple Life- the one that starred Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie. The point of the show was that Paris and Nicole were rich idiots that had to try and act like real people. Just like in real life. On the show Paris and Nicole tried to play matchmaker for Kesha's mom. Later on, Kesha sang backup on a Paris Hilton song called "Nothing in this world." Wait Paris Hilton sings? Who knew? I don't know about you but I am going to go and buy that right now!
13 She Puked in Paris Hilton's Closet
Kesha was out at Paris Hilton's house for a party, got completely wasted and started looking for the bathroom. She wound up in one of her closets and puked all over the place. See? Rich people can be totally stupid just like the rest of us. Well, actually most of us probably haven't gone to someone's house and puked in their closet, but you get the point. Although I imagine Paris has some closets that are totally huge, but still... Bad form Kesha. Come on!
12 Why Do Fans Hold Up Signs That Say "Free Kesha?"
Well it started when a bunch of fans started a petition that said he was "controlling Ke$ha like a puppet, feeding her what she doesn’t want and her creativity is dwindling." Then Kesha went to rehab because of an eating disorder. Kesha's mother told People magazine that Dr. Luke had told her daughter to lose weight, and had compared her to a refrigerator. Come on Dr Luke - you can't call your puppets refrigerators.
11 She Wrote a Song with Ariana Grande
Kesha wrote a song with Ariana in 2012 called "Pink Champagne." Sadly, the song was never released on Ariana's debut album Yours Truly but it was released on Youtube as a demo to thank her fans for reaching 10 million followers on Twitter. Kesha herself has about 3.8 million followers on Twitter, where she talks a lot about her legal case. Her top tweet says "thank you for all the support in my legal case animals. i love all of you. it's meant the world to me." Hmmm.
10 She Used to Roll with Britney Spears
Kesha has sure been around the block a few times, but not in the way you may be thinking. In 2008 she sang back up for a Britney Spears song called "Lace and Leather" and also co-wrote one of her songs. Want to feel old? Britney is now in her mid-30s. It seems like only yesterday when she was one of the world's biggest stars, and then became one of its biggest train wrecks. She has just been a medium sized star and train wreck for quite awhile now.
9 Her Lawsuit is About Some Pretty Heavy Stuff
Kesha claims in her suit that Dr. Luke had "sexually, physically, verbally, and emotionally abused Ms. Sebert to the point where Ms. Sebert nearly lost her life," all in the service of his being able to "maintain complete control over her life and career." It also says that "Ms. Sebert wholly believed that Dr. Luke had the power and money to carry out his threats; she therefore never dared talk about, let alone report, what Dr. Luke had done to her." Some pretty serious claims here. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out over the next year or so.
8 Kesha Is an Animal Rights Advocate
Kesha is a strong advocate for animal rights and is a vegetarian. As she says in this interview "I just love animals, and I’m an advocate for animals rights, and my family has rescued dogs from all over the world. I don’t believe in animal testing. If you see me in fur, it’s always fake. Sometimes you see me wearing skulls, but those are all from roadkill.” Cool Kesha, your skulls are from roadkill. I think that might fall under the category of TMI. Yeah, definitely TMI.
7 She Digs Iggy Pop
This one is a bit of a surprise, but apparently Kesha is into Iggy Pop. She plays his song "Real Wild Child" right before she goes on stage and then also plays it when she gets off stage. Getting pumped up by listening to a song sung by a 68-year-old former punk rocker who used to play in the band The Stooges is not what I would have expected from Kesha, but apparently she is full of surprises. She says that working with Iggy Pop, which she did once, was one of the best experiences of her life.
6 Her Fans Send Her Teeth
One time a fan sent her a tooth and she made a necklace out of it. Then she started to ask fans to send her teeth so she could make more. At one point she said she had about 500 of them. When she was in rehab for her eating disorder she tried to get fans to send her teeth there, but they wouldn't let her. Sorry Kesha, but I side with them on this one. You are in rehab for an eating disorder and you want teeth sent to you in the mail? Yeah...no way.
5 Dr. Luke Says She is Lying
In response to her lawsuit Dr. Luke counter-sued and said that the "false and shocking accusations" and Kesha's refusal to record with Sony anymore was basically the same thing as extortion. It will be interesting to see who is going to win this one. Public opinion is on her side, of course, but in these types of situations things can turn around in a hurry. One of these two is lying, there is no doubt about that. Which one it is will come out at some point.
4 One of Her Friends Stole Her Car
Apparently Kesha has always had a bit of a hard time finding cool people to hang out with that don't take advantage of her. She once wrote a song called "Backstabber" in which she mentions a woman named Jeanie. It turns out that this is the real name of a former friend of hers who stole her car. Kesha basically said that if someone is going to steal her car, that person deserves to get messed with in a song and have her real name mentioned. Can't argue with that! Not too much anyway.
3 She Likes Beards
Kesha used to run a blog called Put your Beard in My Mouth. Sadly, or maybe happily, she has not updated it since 2012. The blog is filled with a bunch of beardies, some of them with their beards in women's mouths. It really is a shocker she decided to stop running this blog, I mean it seems like such a great way to spend your time. But I suppose being a huge star, rehab, and lawsuits are more important. I, for one, am hoping that she gets it up and running again soon.
2 She Digs The Beastie Boys
Kesha claimed in an interview that her first album was inspired by the Beastie Boys classic License to Ill. She said “[That record] was just so funny and irreverent and youthful and no matter what, when you put on that record it makes you wanna destroy and party and it puts you in a great mood.” While that may be nice in some ways, I am sure that MCA is rolling in his grave right now. I don't think when they made that album the goal was to inspire Kesha, but what do I know?
1 She Used to Spend a Ton on Glitter
Kesha used to wear glitter pretty much all the time. How did she keep it on, you ask? She used to bathe in beer and then put the glitter on - the beer was supposed to make it stick. At some point she realized this was not a good idea, at all. She then started using baby oil. She says she was spending over $2,000 dollars a month on glitter at that point. I don't know Kesha. Bathing in beer and spending two grand a month on glitter? It sounds like you might have needed a tiny bit of guidance from someone, probably just not Dr. Luke.
