Hollywood has a tendency to take advantage of seeing its biggest stars in steamy sex scenes involving wet and writhing bodies, but oftentimes it includes pouring rain or romps on the beach. From James Bond coming out of the ocean with his Bond girls to Spider-Man kissing his girl upside down in the rain, there always tends to be some sort of excuse to get their actors all wet and scantily clad on the big screen.
While natural bodies of water and bouts of Mother Nature are definitely appealing in these scenarios, they aren’t the only ways to get their actors all slippery on the big screen. In fact, some of the sexiest swimming scenes on film have been in a swimming pool. This shouldn’t be surprising since Hollywood has always loved using swimming pools as a way to entice viewers for the opportunity to see their favorite stars in bikinis (or sometimes not even that). From Marilyn Monroe skinny dipping in Something’s Got to Give to Elizabeth Taylor’s empress bath in Cleopatra, there’s something to be said for a more tranquil water setting to show off a starlet’s beauty.
From frolicking moments in the backyard pool to scenes created to entice the lead actor, there are some swimming pool scenes that have stood out among the rest. Check out our list of the 15 sexiest swimming pool scenes on the big screen, and see how Hollywood has used this simple backyard feature to entice the audience and boost the sex appeal of a film.
15 My Boss’s Daughter
There are some films that seem trapped in a particular era, and not because of their release date or the theme surrounding the plot. Oftentimes, it’s the actors themselves that cause viewers to realize the age of the film even before knowing when it was made. The 2003 film, My Boss’s Daughter, is a great example of this since it stars a large number of 90s stars that are beyond their peak years. While Tara Reid may have been coined the hot girl in the American Pie series, she quickly moved down the celebrity ladder in recent years. The same can be said for Ashton Kutcher, since he never did reach the film star status after his TV success on That 70’s Show. However, the most glaring example from the film was the pool scene starring Carmen Electra. While the scene was definitely hot (since Electra put on her very own wet t-shirt contest look), it was probably the last time viewers ever saw her as the ultra sexy celebrity of her time.
14 Cruel Intentions
Since Reese Witherspoon started off her acting career at a young age, it was easy for audiences to believe her ultra innocent character in the 1999 film, Cruel Intentions. She seems to always hold onto her baby-faced looks and even as an aging starlet, she looks pretty darn close to her The Man in the Moon character. When she starred in Cruel Intentions, she hadn’t yet become the huge film star from the Legally Blonde film series and the string of romantic comedies. While the public thought of Witherspoon as pure and innocent, that didn’t quite take away from the sexual chemistry between her and fellow co-star, Ryan Phillippe. The pool scene between the two was so steamy that audiences wondered whether or not the two had actual chemistry offscreen. Yet, they didn’t have to wonder for long since the two were married in June 1999. Although the union didn’t last, fans that want to relive their romance can always rewatch their hit film and daydream about their spark-filled pool scene.
13 National Lampoon’s Vacation
National Lampoon’s Vacation is a film that has reached iconic status, and never seems to lose its appeal even if it was released back in 1983. Chevy Chase’s comedic timing and physical comedy never seems to get old, and even Christie Brinkley’s appearance is just as appealing. The sports car scene was recreated in a variety of different ways, but it’s the skinny dipping scene that was the real money maker for the film. At the time, Christie Brinkley was thought of as one of the hottest women in the world, but the film definitely helped to rank her up in the eyes of viewers. She was coined as the impossibly beautiful woman, which made her even more attractive. The appeal of Christie Brinkley in this iconic film still holds true today, since Jessica Simpson famously dressed up as Brinkley’s character in a costumed look with her husband as Chevy Chase. The interesting thing is that Brinkley still looks ultra hot, even at the age of 62. While other starlets have fought against aging with all of their might, Brinkley has already won the battle.
12 Fast Times At Ridgemont High
Oftentimes, older films don’t have the same kind of appeal for younger viewers, since it can seem like the themes and plots couldn’t be as shock provoking as the films released in recent years. While the 1977 Star Wars film may have blown away audiences back in that time, new generation fans can look back on the graphics and characters with an almost laughable disbelief. Yet, there is something to be said for the nostalgia factor in many of the hits from the 80s. Films like The Breakfast Club and Less Than Zero may have been released in the 80s but that doesn’t mean the theme and shock factor doesn’t still hold true for today’s standards. Released in 1982, Fast times at Ridgemont High was a coming of age film that starred some of today’s biggest stars, including Sean Penn and Forest Whitaker. The scene involving Phoebe Cates coming out of the pool was more than just hot by 80’s standards, but still holds onto its sex appeal for today’s generation. From the red bikini to the slow motion camera work, things couldn’t get any sexier (that is, until she took her top off).
The 2013 film, Oblivion, was a futuristic action-packed movie that wasn’t exactly received favorably by critics. While it starred Tom Cruise and even held a smart part for Game of Thrones’ Jaime Lannister actor, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, the storyline left much to be desired and audiences are starting to tire of the same old Tom Cruise action film. Although the starlet that was the true romantic partner in the film was Olga Kurylenko, it was Andrea Riseborough that viewers got to see in the buff. When living with Tom Cruise, Riseborough’s character, Victoria, seemed eager to please in more ways than one. In one of the scenes (during their happier times), Victoria stripped it all off and went skinny dipping in their futuristic swimming pool on one of their stations on Earth. Viewers got a full view of her derriere, and were even treated to some steamy scenes with her and Cruise.
10 Garden State
The 2004 film, Garden State, starring Natalie Portman was actually a bit of a forgotten movie. It didn’t exactly do well in theaters, and many fans have forgotten this Black Swan star acting alongside Zach Braff. In fact, the film can be seen in its entirety on YouTube, so it doesn’t seem like anyone is bothered by the fact that it’s offered up free of charge. Since viewers won’t need to put in their credit card information to see the film, there is one thing that is worth the trouble of looking it up on the Internet. The pool scene starring the cast is a sweet coming of age moment, but that doesn’t take away from the sex appeal of seeing Portman in her mismatched top and bottoms. Braff’s character doesn’t know how to swim, but Portman can be seen affectionately trying to coax him into the water. Not only does she manage to entice him to take the plunge, but she enticed the audience as well.
9 This Is 40
Megan Fox has had a fair amount of screen time in a bikini and in a swimming pool, so it’s a little difficult to say which was her sexiest moment. Her swimming pool moment in How to Lose Friends & Alienate People was definitely sexy, but it lost points because she jumped into the pool wearing a dress. While her film, Jennifer’s Body, featured a pool scene, the whole monster ripping out a guy’s throat part pretty much wipes away all the sex appeal. So, the winning swimming pool moment definitely has to go to the 2012 film, This Is 40. Fox was the eye candy character throughout the film, and managed to even make water guns by the pool look appealing. The slow motion camera work under the water helped to highlight her perfectly toned body. The audience couldn’t help but feel a blood rush while seeing her in the pool, as long as viewers could disregard the drooling men and nearby kids.
8 He’s Just Not That Into You
The 2009 film, He’s Just Not That Into You, starred a huge amount of A-list actors. From Ben Affleck to Drew Barrymore, the hodgepodge of celebrities in this film was enough to make it stand out on its own. Yet, it wasn’t just the big star names or the romantic comedy aspect that had fans loving the film. Starring Scarlett Johansson, the film cashed in on her incredible sex appeal during the peak of her career. From the huge success of other films like Lost in Translation and Girl with a Pearl Earring, He’s Just Not That Into You helped to show a different side to this super sultry actress. The pool scene involving her skinny dipping adventure with Bradley Cooper showed audiences just how appealing she could be onscreen, and definitely helped to create a realistic storyline on how Cooper’s character could ever want to cheat on Jennifer Connelly.
7 Girl Next Door
Oftentimes, actresses use overly sexualized films to try and boost their careers. From Cameron Diaz in scantily clad ensembles in Something About Mary and the Charlie’s Angels film series to Angelina Jolie appearing naked in Gia, sometimes these sorts of tactics have been successful in helping further a film career. Yet, that isn’t always the case for all of Hollywood’s up and comers. While the stripper act may have worked out well for Marisa Tomei in her highly acclaimed performance in The Wrestler, it didn’t do any favors for Elizabeth Berkley in Showgirls. The 2004 film, The Girl Next Door, was pretty much a make or break moment for lead actress, Elisha Cuthbert, since none of her previous performances really helped her become a household name. While the release of this film was the start of her decline in Hollywood, that doesn’t take away from the incredible sex appeal she exuded as the adult star next door. The pool scene unleashed all the feelings of teenage angst and the longing for a seductress to take control. While it may not have ended the way the Matthew Kidman character wanted, but the scene was enough to definitely make the film worth watching.
When Claire Danes was first introduced to audiences in the 90’s, she instantly resonated with fans due to her teenage angst-filled character on My So-Called Life. While the series only lasted a single season, it created a cult following and has experienced a rejuvenated popularity in recent years. When she transitioned her career onto the big screen, she was only 16-years-old when she starred opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s, Romeo+Juliet. DiCaprio was equally early on in his career, but even at 22-years-old he had a boyish spirit that liked to play pranks on the cast and crew during filming. This reportedly didn’t bode well with Danes, and rumor has it that the two didn’t get along well onset. Yet, it was a true testament to their skill as actors because the pool scene involving the pair was absolutely electric. DiCaprio’s creeping in to see Danes added a sneaky element to their secret rendezvous that was super sexy. Although it may not have been actual chemistry, it was real enough for viewers to feel nice and heated while watching their intimate kisses.
The 2002 film, Swimfan, was very much like a modern day Fatal Attraction in its storyline, since it featured the fanatic obsession that turned a simple romance film into a psychotic thriller. The cast left a little to be desired, since many of the young actors didn’t have too much on their resume in terms of big budget Hollywood films. In fact, the lead actors, Erika Christensen and Jesse Bradford, have become pretty much forgotten by today’s standards. Yet, it wasn’t because of a lack of onscreen chemistry. When the two meet up for a simple dinner date, things quickly take a turn when Christensen’s character entices Bradford’s character into the pool. Flirting turned into a hot sex romp in the pool, although it was a tryst that was deeply regretted. She may have been completely psychotic, but she sure looked hot as the seductress determined to get her man while splashing around in the pool.
4 Laurel Canyon
When Laurel Canyon was first released in 2002, many of its stars hadn’t yet reached the peak in their careers. While Kate Beckinsale had been in a number of hit films, including Pearl Harbor and Brokedown Palace, she hadn’t yet embarked on the hugely successful Underworld film series. Christian Bale who played Beckinsale’s fiancé, Sam, was also a bit of an unknown since the majority of mainstream audiences only knew him from his 2000 hit film, American Psycho. The combination of these up and coming actors still on the rise and the lackluster storyline in Laurel Canyon could account for its failure at the box office. While the film is pretty much unknown to the general public, those that have seen it can’t help but remember the pool scene involving Beckinsale and Frances McDormand. Alessandro Nivola, who played McDormand’s boyfriend, helped to facilitate this naked make-out pool session so he pretty much looks like “the man.” Yet, that didn’t seem to help to further his career, and it didn’t help to boost numbers at the box office either.
It’s become common practice for a once-TV star to try and revamp their career through some shockingly sexual endeavors. From former Mouseketeers to Disney kids trying to shed their “good girl” image, it’s definitely not unheard of for celebrities to take drastic measures in transitioning in their careers. Yet, none have taken it as far as Elizabeth Berkley. Formerly known for her squeaky clean role in the television series, Saved by the Bell, Berkley took on the role of a stripper in the 1995 film, Showgirls. While the film tanked at the box office and did absolutely nothing to help Berkley in becoming a film star, it did give fans one of the steamiest pool scenes in a motion picture. Starring alongside Kyle MacLachlan, Berkley’s pool scene was almost like a performance in itself with all the choreography and splashing water. It may not have helped the film’s storyline, but it definitely gave audiences an eyeful.
2 Alpha Dog
Released in 2006, Alpha Dog was actually based on the tragic true story of Nicholas Markowitz. At the age of just 15-years-old, Markowitz was caught up in a drug money dispute involving his older half-brother. Although he was kidnapped and held for ransom, his kidnappers reportedly partied with Markowitz, with several witnesses claiming to see him alive and well days before his death. The film was filled with some of Hollywood’s hottest up and coming actors, including Justin Timberlake, Olivia Wilde, Emile Hirsch, and Amber Heard. During the partying stage of the film, there is an ultra sexy pool scene involving a threesome between Anton Yelchin, Amber Heard, and Amanda Seyfried. This was a prelude to how far Seyfried was willing to go with her sexuality in a film, since she would later star as a call girl in the 2009 film, Choe, and an adult star in the 2013 film, Lovelace. Anton Yelchin played the role of Markowitz, which is a bit ironic since both were taken from this world at an all too early age.
1 Wild Things
When it comes to the sexiest pool scenes in film, it’s pretty much obvious what will go at the top of the list. The 1998 film, Wild Things, may not have had the most inventive storyline in regards to the backstabbing and trickery used by all parties involved, but what it lacked in plot it more than made up for in sex appeal. The film starred Neve Campbell at the height of her success, and was used as a way to get away from her squeaky clean Party of Five roots. Campbell starred alongside the ultra sexy, Denise Richards, and paired the two in a sultry pool scene that will go down in infamy. A cat fight that turned into a sex scene with girl-on-girl action, Wild Things was filled with this sort of shock provoking sexiness that definitely drew in its fair share of male viewers. While the threesome scene involving Matt Dillon was what most likely warranted an NC-17 rating, the pool scene with Campbell and Richards was by far the hottest part of the film.
