The cast of Game of Thrones is full of attractive people. But as enjoyable as it is to watch them looking amazing, as the show often allows, it's even more enjoyable to see them at some of their most unflattering moments. Especially if some of those unflattering moments come from the show itself. Because we're sure we don't have to tell you that Joffrey didn't exactly look appealing as he exited the show. Though you may have been too busy cheering to truly notice how gruesome he looked.
And while Jack Gleeson was more than happy to leave Westeros, that wasn't the case for Ed Skrein who as you'll read blamed backstage reasons for him getting replaced. Alexander Siddig was also furious when his time ended far earlier than he was expecting. But hey, that's Game of Thrones for you.
You'll also love getting to see the cast leave Westeros behind, even if they definitely don't look the most flattering in the photos. Whether that's seeing Peter Dinklage on stage with his punk rock band, Sophie Turner sticking her tongue out like Miley Cyrus or Jack Gleeson "relieving himself" on camera. Maisie also looks unrecognizable, but perhaps not in a good way, with her upcoming film Departures that has her rock some blue hair. And as for Kit? Needing to lean on his friend to leave without falling down is perhaps proof enough of how his night at the bar went.
There isn't a Game of Thrones fan out there that won't love seeing the 20 most unflattering photos of the cast!
20 Maisie looking distraught
Maisie Williams definitely must have some moments in her everyday life when she starts to feel a little bit stressed out. Such as the fact that moments where she may think she's alone, like in these photos here, are actually being photographed. And to be fair, she definitely wouldn't be the only person who turns to cigarettes to try and relax.
While you may have no problem with smoking and may engage in the habit yourself, we are sure the general consensus is that it is still not exactly the most attractive habit that a person can have.
Williams has never spoken out about her 'nasty' habit, but she has been photographed puffing away on multiple occasions. Though we're sure if Williams needed help finding a healthy habit to help offset the negatives that come with smoking that she'd have no shortage of activities that her bank account would allow her to engage in.
We also hate to break it to you, but Williams isn't the only one who does that who hangs out in Westeros. Kit Harington has also been spotted with it in the past. Meaning that perhaps it was Jon Snow who passed the habit on to Maisie!
19 Daenerys and Jon Get Too Close
Game of Thrones is full of twists and turns and one of the most recent came when it was confirmed that Jon Snow had a direct link to the Targaryen lineage. Something that definitely didn't slow down the writers when creating a love angle between Jon and Daenerys. Even if both actors admitted that filming the implied incestuous scene was very uncomfortable,
"For us, as actors, it's just weird. The reality of who they are to each other? I'm not sure how that's...," said Clarke.
This led Kit to chime in, "I remember looking at her and going, 'Oh god, I'm sorry. Let's go again.' I think they both know it's wrong, I think they both know it's going to cause problems. But it's that thing; when you suddenly feel that deeply about someone, and you go through those events together, it's like a runaway train, you can't stop it happening."
Considering the two spent the entire rest of the series apart, that was definitely one way to make their first time working together on the set be a memorable one. Let's hope the two can get over the awkwardness though, as we wouldn't be surprised if they don't just become one-time bed buds. The photo from above was taken from an interview where she was also asked about the scene!
18 Cersei and Jamie Doing Some Family Bonding
There are many weird things that go on in the Game of Thrones universe that we're sure the actors definitely raised their eyebrows at the first time they read it. That was absolutely the case for Nikolaj Coster-Waldau who learned very early on in the series that he was going to be very close, if you know what we mean, with his sister, Cersei.
When discussing the relationship in a past interview, Coster-Waldau admitted that he just doesn't try and think too hard about what is actually being implied by those types of scenes;
"I've never really gone too deep into the whole sister-brother thing because I can't use that information. I have to look at her as the woman he loves and desires. Lena's a very good actress, and that's kind of what carries the whole thing. I have two older sisters. I do not want to go there. It's just too weird."
We are sure the added element of him having sisters definitely makes his reaction all the more reasonable. When Lena Headey interviewed with the website HeroComplex, she also talked more about the scene with Joffrey's body
"We discussed that scene a bunch before we did it. It’s that thing about grieving that you try to fill the void of pain and hurt and loss. It’s usually done by drinking and being with somebody. People manage grief in interesting ways and because they have this connection, obviously, she’s not like this is the perfect place."
17 Lena Looking Unrecognizable For a Music Video
When the band Kasabian sat down to think about who they would love to have in their music video, Lena Headey may have been at the very top of that list (because why wouldn't she be!). But even though they knew what they wanted to do for their music video, "Ill Ray (The King)", they still had to be shocked that she agreed to come on for the project. Especially because doing so meant putting herself through some less than flattering looks, such as shoving food down her face and mowing down on it. Something that not even someone as beautiful as Headey is going to be able to make look good.
The music video sees Headey's character resurrect King Richard III and the two go off to engage in various adventures, including eating and hanging out in a pub. Though when you consider how serious things must get on the set of Game of Thrones, perhaps Headey was just excited at the opportunity to embrace her sillier side and that may have helped influence her decision to say yes.
And while the band Kasabian may not be as familiar in North America, they're arguably one of the most successful bands in the U.K and have had 5 straight albums place at number 1 on the charts. So perhaps Headey was just as starstruck by the opportunity to meet them!
16 Sophie Taking a Selfie After a Run
Sophie Turner knows that part of being successful in Hollywood is being able to take care of her body and overall image. When Turner was asked about the motivation behind her exercising, she replied
"Exercise has made me feel more positive about my body, less self-conscious. I don't know if I look any different, but I feel stronger, and I can do more, which is such a good feeling. It's so liberating."
When you consider how often Turner is photographed, it's wonderful to see that she knows what she has to do to try and feel more positive about her body. Even if we're sure there are probably some outfits and moments in her life that she thought wouldn't be broadcast to the world.
On this particular run outside, it wasn't a member of the paparazzi that joined her for the jog and took the photo, but Turner herself who was feeling photogenic. Perhaps she just wanted to show the world how hard she had exercised on this particular day! But regardless of her reasons for posting the photo, it's still not exactly the most flattering look. Especially when you look at the hilarious - albeit tired- expression, that Turner is sporting.
15 Kit Needing Help To Leave The Bar
The cast of Game of Thrones definitely always have a reason to be feeling happy. After all, even if they're having a tough day, perhaps they can sit back and just think about how awesome it is that they're in Game of Thrones and things won't seem so bad after all! Which also means that when the cast is in a celebratory mood, such as going to the bar, it's definitely very possible that things could get out of hand.
But Kit Harington is probably hoping that the next time he decides he wants to engage in too much partying, that he does so when he is sure that the cameras aren't going to be around. Because while his character may have helped carry the show at times, in this instance, his friend literally needed to be the one carrying him out!
This particular incident happened back in January when a source for TMZ reported that Kit, “Started banging on the table, grabbing at pool cues, and getting in peoples’ faces."
Let's hope he wasn't trying to stick anyone with the pointy end of the pool cue! He was also allegedly asked to leave the establishment after it became abundantly clear that he had gone way past his limit.
14 Peter Dinklage Was In a Punk Band
Peter Dinklage is a man of many passions. And while acting may be the thing he cares the most about, he also seemingly has a pretty big passion for music. This passion was perhaps embraced the most in the '90s when he joined a punk rock band. While they never made it big, we do have this hilarious photo of Dinklage from his time as a rocker.
Dinklage was also left with a permanent reminder from his time on the stage, revealing in a past interview that he suffered a significant scar as a result of his time in the music industry,
"I have a pretty big scar that runs from my neck to my eyebrow. I was in a band called Whizzy for many years in New York. … We played a show at CBGB, and I was jumping around onstage and got accidentally kneed in the temple. I was like Sid Vicious, just bleeding all over the stage. Blood was going everywhere. I just grabbed a dirty bar napkin and dabbed my head and went on with the show.”
Sounds like it's also a reminder of perhaps the most badass thing he's ever done in his entire life. Even if it did come with a cost!
13 Joffrey Biting The Dust
One of the most memorable deaths on the series came when Joffrey bit the dust. Though to be fair, his may have been a death that you were actually pretty happy to see. Even if it meant not being able to see Gleeson's tremendous portrayal of the character on the screen anymore.
When interviewed about if he felt sad on his character not making it to the end of the series, Gleeson was very blunt in his acceptance,
"I didn’t care that much, because four seasons is enough. You have to end at some point. My dad always says to leave a party wanting more. You should never be the last to leave, when everyone’s kind of sleepy and cranky and like, Oh, this is awful. You should leave a little late, but not so late that it’s bad, the energy is still there. I feel like I left at the right time."
Gleeson also admitted that he knew from the start of filming that he knew he wasn't going to make it to the end, which may have also helped,
"[Looking up the Character's fate] That was one of the first things I did when I heard I got the part: I looked at the Wikipedia summary of the books and my character. If you get a new job and you know that at some point you’re definitely going to be fired from it, you’re going to check online when you’re going to be fired."
12 Gwendoline Christie Covers Up Nikolaj's Face
There have been many amazing storylines that have been on Game of Thrones so far. But one of the most intriguing came when Brienne of Tarth, played by Gwendoline Christie, was interacting with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau's back in season 3. When Christie was asked about what it felt like working with Coster-Waldau, she replied,
"Yeah, I really, really, really love playing this part and I feel really lucky. You’re exactly right, it’s just — people encouraging you, people saying that they like what you’re doing is an enormous confidence booster. It also helps that Season 3 is an amazing storyline. And working with Nikolaj is brilliant."
She didn't stop with her praise there, going on to say,
"He’s so helpful and so supportive in a variety of conflicting ways. He’s great to work with and he just wants, like I do, just to do the very, very best. And, you know, it’s nothing more than just really loving the show and really loving this part."
Judging by this photo it's also clear they have a fun relationship outside of work. Though even if it was done as a joke, Coster-Waldau may not be a huge fan of having his face covered and would agree it isn't the most flattering of looks!
11 Don't Ask Peter For a Selfie
While there are many, many perks that come with being on Game of Thrones, there are definitely some downsides as well that the actors have to deal with. Such as the fact that wherever these stars go, there's always a pretty good chance that they're going to run into fans. And while that could be flattering, many fans have also been known to ask for a selfie with the star.
But it's something that Peter Dinklage has been very open about his displeasure for in the past and may also explain his less than enthused reaction in this next entry.
“People taking pictures, especially in a place like this, they want proof of a memory but they don’t actually experience something to remember. It’s sort of strange. ‘Can I have your picture?’ But they don’t really meet you."
He continued with, "It’s just a sort of thing that’s happening now that’s replacing an experience, a memory that you will have- instead, it’s just the memory of a photo.”
Which means that you'd hope in this case that the fan would have started out having a wonderful conversation with Dinklage and then asked for the photo at the end. But looking at Dinklage's expression, that probably wasn't the case.
10 Maisie Trading In Her Beautiful Eyes
There are many things that actors may have to put up with on a set that you may not realize are as annoying as they are to deal with. For Maisie Williams, she definitely wishes that the contacts she was required to wear when her character goes blind weren't nearly as uncomfortable as they are,
"I read somewhere that they gave me the option between CGI and contact lenses, which isn’t true at all. They just said, contact lenses. So I had to wear these really thick contact lenses that were 16 millimeters and hand-painted so they looked all murky."
She continued with, "They were so, so painful, but guys were like, ‘You’re an actress, stop complaining'," said Williams when talking on Late Night with Seth Meyers. Maisie also lamented about the contacts when talking to EW,
"I love having something weird going on on the set...Then I realized they were the most painful things ever...These little things in your eyes are so thick, they’re the most painful things ever.’ I didn’t anticipate they’d get so sore after such little time.”
While there is no doubt that Maisie isn't lying about being uncomfortable, we are sure the nice paycheque definitely helps her feel better with the level of discomfort that comes with the job!
9 Young Sophie With Makeup Smeared On Her Cheeks
We are sure many women out there can attest to at least one occasion when they decided to get a little bit funky with their sense of style. This may mean adjusting the clothes you wear, changing how you style your hair or altering how you do your makeup.
Sophie Turner definitely has several different people who are experts in the fashion world who are going to be able to help her along as she develops what it is she wants her public image to look like. Though we are sure nobody in their right mind would ever recommend that Sophie leave the house looking like this!
While there is nothing wrong with the basic sweater that she has going on, what is going on with her makeup? Perhaps she was just having some fun with it and wanted to see how she'd look with red streaks across her cheek. Something that is definitely understandable if she was just having some fun with her friends (maybe Maisie!). But while the makeup experiment may have been fun to do, the reality is a photo that is far from flattering. And as a result, is something that Sophie would probably much rather not have online.
8 Sophie Sticking Her Tongue Out
Sophie Turner has definitely been known to embrace her sillier side at times. And when you consider how incredibly stressed out her job may get at times, that is definitely something she needs to do if she is going to manage to stay afloat in Hollywood and in many ways should be encouraged.
But no matter how silly she may have been feeling on this particular day, you may have to agree that sticking her tongue out and literally right next to another person's face is not a good look. And while she may have looked at the photo after it was taken and laughed, the next step that she probably should have been doing is hitting the delete button.
She definitely isn't the only celebrity out there who has been open about sticking their tongue out *cough* Miley Cyrus *cough*, but it wasn't exactly a good look when Cyrus did it either.
Turner may have hoped that considering there are tens of thousands of photos of her taking selfies that something like this could slip off the radar. But when she's as big a star as she is, there's no way a photo that is as unflattering as this is going to go uncovered forever.
7 Maisie Drastically Changes Her Look For Departures
One of the hardest things for actors to do once they've found success in one television show or movie is to translate that to another successful project. Maisie Williams, along with the rest of Game of Thrones, may have their work cut out for them. Because as hard as Williams may try, it's probably going to be very hard for people not to see her as Arya Stark.
Though there are some examples like John Krasinski who has perhaps finally shaken his Jim Halpert image with A Quiet Place. Which means perhaps Williams just has to be smart with what she picks.
She's also probably hoping this drastically different appearance will also help people forget about her time in Westeros when they go to see her in Departures. The film also stars Nina Dobrev and Tyler Hoechlin and centers around a character trying to live out their bucket list.
We are sure if many people were asked about their own bucket list, the opportunity to get to interact with Maisie Williams would have to be a pretty popular request. Which is understandable when you consider that getting to interact with Maisie would surely be an incredible experience that you wouldn't soon forget.
6 One Of The First Cast Group Shots
Game of Thrones would never have reached the success that it has without an amazing amount of success in terms of the casting department. Something that may become even more impressive when you consider how young so much of the primary cast was.
And while you may recognize the 5 faces in the photo we have for you with our next entry, we're sure you still love getting a throwback look at how some of the cast looked at the very beginning. Just in case you're also looking at the photo and drawing a blank spot, we have Sophie Turner (Sansa) standing beside Alfie Allen (Theon), Richard Madden (Robb), Kit Harington (Jon Snow) and Maisie Williams (Arya) is in front.
This photo was taken back in 2010 and is one of the first group shots that involved multiple cast members.
When talking with TheGuardian about what her big goal for getting cast in the series was, Maisie revealed, "The thing I was really obsessed about was whether I would earn enough money to buy myself a laptop. My stepdad, Gary, just looked at me and said: ‘I think there’ll be enough for a couple of laptops, Maisie.’"
He was definitely right about that!
5 Alexander Siddig Gets An Unexpected Exit
Alexander Siddig was ecstatic when he found out that he was contracted through the first 4 episodes of season 6. But as fans of the show will tell you, Siddig met an unexpectedly early end (wait, in Game of Thrones?!) in the premiere episode of season 6.
Siddig was extra disappointed by the fact that at least according to the books, he should still be raking in the screen-time. When discussing why he took a leave from the show, Siddig admitted
"Something happened; I have no idea what. There was an enormous amount of fan excitement when I got named to be on the show, and everyone was like, 'Oh my god, yes, Doran Martell. He’s going to be great as Doran Martell.' That might have been the kiss of death."
She continued with, "Maybe they didn’t want quite that much attention on that character. Maybe they thought, “Well, let’s prove that we’re going to stray from the books. We’re going to do something else, and he will be our first example of that.”
He went on to say that it may have also been due to him leaking a spoiler, "Or maybe I just screwed up. Maybe I said the wrong thing to the wrong person." Which if so, makes all of his scenes and his death in particular, all the harder to watch.
4 Jack Gleeson Having "An Accident"
Jack Gleeson may always be known as King Joffrey, but it wasn't the first time he got cast in a major picture. Gleeson was one of the many Irish boys that were cast to be an extra in the Matthew McConaughey movie, Reign of Fire. This photo is a screencap from his brief appearance in the movie. And while there's nothing embarrassing about being an extra, there is something embarrassing about the story Gleeson told Vulture about that day on set;
"I got cast just because they filmed it in Ireland. They filmed it in Wicklow, which is outside of Dublin. It was just a matter of banding together as many young Irish kids as possible. It wasn’t a special auditioning process. I do remember really needing to go to the bathroom at one point. They were like, “Just wait, we’re filming,” so I just wet myself. I was a 9-year-old kid, and I had to p*ss my pants."
We are sure if people who were around Gleeson became aware of what had gone on, that he probably would have been promptly asked to leave the set. Which also probably would have dissuaded him from continuing along in acting, meaning that the entire Game of Thrones universe would surely have looked different.
3 Sansa And Ramsay Bolton
Ramsay Bolton has definitely done some pretty extreme things on Game of Thrones. But one of his most repulsive acts came when he did a little too much to Sophie Turner's character, Sansa.
When Turner was interviewed about what was considered by some to be a highly controversial and unflattering look for both Turner and the show, she defended it, saying,
“The more we talk about it the better. And screw the people who are saying we shouldn’t be putting this on TV and screw the people who are saying they’re going to boycott the show because of it."
She continued with, "This sort of thing used to happen and it continues to happen now, and if we treat it as such a taboo and precious subject, then how are people going to have the strength to come out and feel comfortable saying that this has happened to them?”We are sure there are many people who have gained a lot of strength from watching Sansa Stark. And while Turner is clearly in favor of the scene, she did also state, "My first response was like, maybe we shouldn’t have put that on screen at all.”
Which means perhaps you will feel better about yourself if you were outraged when you saw it go down on screen.
2 Emilia Clarke Looking Worse For Wear In Voice From The Stone
Emilia Clarke has definitely been asked to engage in some seriously emotional dialogue during her time in Westeros. But we don't know if she has ever had a moment where she looks quite as distraught as she does in her film, Voice From The Stone. The gothic horror film was released back in 2015. While Game of Thrones and Clarke's performance is loved by critics, that wasn't the case with this film. While we're sure Clarke put forth her best effort, the film came away with a score on Rotten Tomatoes of 29%; which is probably not what she was hoping for.
Though perhaps she was just happy to be able to mix things up. Far too many actors and actresses have struggled once their time in the spotlight ends, so nobody should blame Clarke for trying out different projects. She may also take solace in the fact that her more recent film, Solo: A Star Wars Story is currently sitting at 72% on Rotten Tomatoes. Especially because the pressure was probably way higher for that one! Though it's not like Emilia Clarke is unfamiliar with having to live up to the incredibly high expectations of critics and fans. Let's just really hope she does it again with the last season of Game of Thrones.
1 Ed Skrein's Awkward Exit From The Show For Backstage Reasons
One of the toughest things you may need to experience is getting fired from your job. Now imagine if the job that you were fired from was Game of Thrones! It's definitely something that may not feel the best. Ed Skrein may not have had the biggest part in the world, but he was still involved in the universe; showing up in season 3 as the character Daario Naharis.
But when audiences were introduced to the character again the following season, Skrein had been swapped out for Michiel Huisman. Skein was furious at the change, as well as reports that he willingly walked away from the role,
"Contrary to reports, I didn’t walk away [from the show]. I wouldn’t walk away. There are very few things in my life I’ve walked away from. This is a complicated industry and there’s always politics involved."
Which makes any photo and past scenes of Skrein are sure to be at least a little bit awkward when you go back and look at his character. Thankfully Skrein has managed to put a successful career together for himself including playing the antagonist, Ajax, in Deadpool. He was also recently cast to play the main villain in the sequel to Maleficent.
