WWE star Nikki Bella, 34, is reportedly “heartbroken” after splitting from fellow wrestler John Cena, 40, just weeks before their wedding. Cena, who proposed to Bella a year ago, had previously said he had no interest in getting married again after his divorce from Elizabeth Huberdeau in 2012.
“She never gave him an ultimatum. He talked a really good game about having changed, about having his priorities straight, about knowing what’s important, and that it was her. But as the day got closer, it was like he just went back to who he’s always been — which is someone who puts himself first, always,” a source told People magazine. “He’s an incredibly dedicated, driven, ambitious guy. And for the longest time, he said he didn’t think he had room in his life for a spouse or kids. It seems like, in the end, that was still the truth. But in that case, he never should’ve proposed, let alone in front of millions of people. Now she’s heartbroken.”

Bella, who already ordered a gown from Marchesa, is said to be “devastated” after Cena put the kibosh on their May 5, 2018, nuptials in Mexico. “This was supposed to be the happiest time of her life. He ruined it and blew everything up,” the source added. “It wasn’t going to be some showy Hollywood, over-the-top glitzy thing.”
The source goes on to call Cena a heel, a wrestling archetype that is another word for a villain.
The sources statement contrasts with the couple’s announcement on social media yesterday.
“While this decision was a difficult one, we continue to have a great deal of love and respect for one another. We ask that you respect our privacy during this time in our lives,” reads the statement. Cena, seen as a gentleman in Hollywood circles, added tweeted that “Hardship, loss, and humility are extremely difficult waters to navigate, but perseverance thru them builds a strength to withstand anything life throws your way.”
The wrestler-turned-actor, who is promoting his new film Blockers, had previously told People that fans often referred to Bella as his wife and that he wished they had gotten married sooner.
“I’m already ready to go there and it sounds nice hearing it,” he said. “I know that we will have a wonderful future together because I love the way that sounds.”
Despite the source’s comments, it’s still unclear what led to the breakup, which seems to have been hard for both Cena and Bella. Last Thursday, the former WWE Champion foreshadowed the weekend split by tweeting, "Life is funny sometimes. One minute it's kissing and hugging on you, the next it's kicking ya square in the nugget bag. Moments make the journey and the powerful play goes on."
