Katy Perry kissed an American Idol contestant and he did not like it. In fact, he got mad at the singer’s actions.
20-year-old Benjamin Glaze auditioned for the new American Idol last year but got way more than he expected from one judge. Footage of Perry kissing the boy was revealed during the premiere episode of the rebooted show. The Oklahoma native broke the ice with the judges, Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie, by sharing a secret with them. He has never been kissed.
The "Teenage Dream" singer asked Glaze to come over to see her at the judge’s table and give her a kiss on the cheek. Their exchange did not end there. Before he went back to his audition, Perry planted one right on the young man’s lips. Most people would love to get a kiss from the gorgeous singer, but not this guy. He was just uncomfortable.
“I know a lot of guys would be like, 'Heck yeah!' But for me, I was raised in a conservative family and I was uncomfortable immediately. I wanted my first kiss to be special," Glaze shared with the New York Times.
Immediately after the kiss, he went back to his audition where he performed the Nick Jonas song "Levels." He did not move on to Hollywood, but Glaze and his music are now making headlines for other reasons.
The Internet exploded with remarks regarding Perry’s actions, especially in the wake of the #MeToo movement. If it had been Bryan or Richie who kissed a female contestant out of the blue, it would have been viewed as sexual harassment for sure. An action like that by a male judge could have very well tanked the show.
However, Benjamin Glaze was clear there was no sexual harassment of any kind. Plus, he revealed his friends helped him see his kiss with Perry was not his first kiss.
“It was lip contact versus a romantic situation with someone you care about. That's what a real first kiss is,” he said.
Ok, let’s be real for a minute: If Katy Perry was a man and that American Idol kiss happened to a woman, it would be sexual harassment, right? If we want people to listen to legit claims of harassment by women, we need to end the double standards. My 2 cents.— Anna Baglione (@AnnaBaglione) March 12, 2018
Glaze is also very grateful for Perry for Tweeting about him and his music. Thanks to a kiss he now has gained a lot more media attention, which will hopefully help him kick of his career in the music world.
