Dance crazes — the unsung hero of popular culture. There are arguably two camps in the dance craze phenomena; those who can get down with the dancing and bust a move, and those who, well, have two left feet. If you fall in the latter category (which is where I am proud to admit I reside), your identity is especially important. You have the very important job of witnessing history; you are seeing something unfold which is especially essential to preserving something epic: dance crazes can be fleeting, but the moment of witnessing something viral is an extraordinary kind of awesome. Dance crazes belong to you, and you can define them how you want!

In the Snapchat generation, it's important to note the idea of trends have changed a little; we can save important moments by a click of a button where we are able to watch these moments repeat over and over, so we'll never forget the influential moments; moments that can put us "In Our Feelings," if you will! One recent viral dance craze holds this power. The #In My FeelingsChallenge comes to us courtesy of Drake, who we know is already a dancing pro (do you remember the music video for Hotline Bling?). In this instance, Drake isn't the one dancing into the spotlight; an Instagram-famous comedian has all of the moves!

His name is Shiggy. What matters about the Instagram comedian is his notably important ability to have his pulse on the biggest moments in popular culture. In the hours since Drake dropped his latest record, Shaquille "Shiggy" Mitchell filmed an Instagram story, something that only takes seconds and we all do on a daily basis, doing a dance routine to In My Feelings from the brand new album. The Instagram video inspired a viral hashtag #DoTheShiggy, and his life has never been the same. Who is Shiggy and why is he making all of the right moves?

Shiggy Came Up With The Video In No Time

"The Shiggster" is his Twitter handle, and he's got his finger on the pulse of popular culture! Surely Shiggy was just having fun when he created #TheShiggyChallenge, but he was really doing something much bigger than we could ever imagine. He knew exactly what he was doing when he created the dance; he made the video merely hours after the record came out! Shiggy must have known the whole deal was too good to be true. According to Vulture,

In My Feelings "was the standout from the bunch and Shiggy seemed to know it before even Drake and his team did."

What is so critical about Shiggy's powerful move is the impeccable timing of the video recording. He made the split-second decision to make the video right when the song dropped, and it propelled the song to incredible heights.

Shiggy Was No Stranger To Drake

Shiggy and the birth of the "In My Feelings Challenge" seem to have come out of thin air; many of us had zero idea who Shiggy was! However, this doesn't seem to be the case for Drake, himself, proving he will always be one step ahead.

Shiggy, the current king of being "in the know" knew about Drake's familiarity with his work. In an interview with The Breakfast Club, he revealed, "When people follow me on the ’gram [who are] big and I like them, I always hit them and contact them to say I appreciate you following me."

By sliding into those DMs, Shiggy facilitated the connection which started the relationship of the summer.

The Challenge Has Smashed Records

Setting a record in the music world is a club many aspiring musicians can only dream of holding a membership card into. When you think about musicians who achieve important music records, it's likely you think of veteran musicians! Drake has only been in the public consciousness for so long, but he has already achieved the membership card, and he had help too!

Standing alongside Drake on the metaphorical throne of music record breaking is Shiggy, himself. The duo has made such an impression with #TheShiggyChallenge causing the song to skyrocket to the number-four position on the charts on the other side of the pond, as per OfficialCharts.com.

The power of viral content is so important; the streaming and Internet era have incorporated new rules as to how records are set. In My Feelings has just surpassed "The Harlem Shake" as the most streamed song ever.

Shiggy Is Surprised With The Response

Instant fame is difficult for anyone to grapple. When your life goes from zero to one hundred in a matter of seconds, your whole life feels brand new. For Shiggy, #TheShiggyChallenge has made a giant impression on the public. Aspiring dancers have recreated their own versions of the video, and in some cases, the content has teetered into dangerous territory.

Unfortunately, some fans of the challenge have been injured while attempting their own viral creations. Due to the surprisingly high number of injuries, Shiggy has had to speak out, understandably warning dancers not to commit intense acts like jumping out of moving vehicles! He spoke to CBS, saying,

"The 'Do The Shiggy' challenge started with me doing a dance outside on the street with my friends. But it got escalated to a different level.

The message I have for kids doing this challenge is to be safe, stay in a safe area and just do the dance, you don't have to get outside your car or do it in a moving car or anything involving a car, you can do this anywhere. So kids be safe."

Odell Beckham Jr. Deserves Some Credit

Inspiration can strike from anywhere, but it's extra special when it comes from a special specific someone. New York Giants superstar, Odell Beckham Jr., is a role model and inspiration to many, including our new favorite dynamic duo Shiggy and Drake.

Many celebrities have shown off their moves by paying tribute to Shiggy's dance, but Odell Beckham Jr.'s video, posted to his Instagram on July 4, held special meaning. Shiggy stopped by MTV's TRL and told fans, Odell Beckham Jr. inspired the viral hashtag, urging fans to do the Shiggy challenge.

Since Odell posted the video, his Instagram has seen a ton of new followers. I wonder if this means he can stop asking if Keke loves him?

Shiggy Just Wanted To Dance

Busting a move — we all do it. Getting up and dancing releases a ton of good energy, often providing us with endless good vibes. Getting down is rather simple and turns out, simply dancing around was Shiggy's initial motivation for creating the "In My Feelings" challenge!

The creator of the latest viral sensation was expecting nothing more from his video than a fun time and nothing less than that. According to High Snobiety, Shiggy revealed in an interview, he "was dancing in his own way [and] he felt like dancing."

Oftentimes, simplicity is the best ingredient to the best moments in life. Shiggy's desire just to move inspired something much bigger.

it was the one for Shiggy

One of the first things you notice when you sit down to listen to Drake's latest album, Scorpion, you see there are a ton of songs to pick from; there are 25 songs with the potential to become your new anthem. With so many tracks to choose from, it's a wonder Shiggy could pick his favorite one, especially since he created his viral project only hours after the record was released.

Appropriate for the title of the song, Shiggy realized he was "in his feelings" for the track "In My Feelings." When speaking to TRL, he said the song "made him want to dance" and "it was the one!"

Shiggy Hails From Queens

Everyone has their own beginnings and their own story. Shiggy's metaphorical chapter book is already a thick volume, just from the #ShiggyChallenge.

Before Shiggy set the world on fire with the dance craze of the moment, he got his start as a comedian from Queens, New York, where he filmed episodes for his Instagram series, "The Shiggy Show." His love for dancing wasn't born alongside his viral fame. His mother spoke to The New York Post, revealing her son "was always dancing around the house. He told me from an early age that he wanted to perform. That was all he was interested in."

The Challenge Has Been Costly

The #InMyFeelingsChallenge's instant take over of the Internet has inevitably caused fans to ask some questions. How does compensation work with such an instantaneous viral challenge? The answer isn't yet very clear, but Shiggy has already made some inquiring minds laugh about the subject!

BET reported some outlets were incorrectly reporting Drake had a hand in paying Shiggy for helping his song become an overnight success. The rumors of the singer paying the comedian over $250,000 are untrue!

Shiggy addressed the rumors with a funny video where he set the record straight for fans and jokingly said, "What, you think he [is] walking around with a checkbook in the club?"

The Duo Have Been Photographed Together

The fast pace at which The Shiggy Challenge went viral has been exciting. The short amount of time it's taken for celebrities and "regular folks" to create their own video interpretations of the challenge has the potential to be an era-defining example of viral content. The coolest factor in the "Shiggy Situation" occurred when the two minds came together; Drake and Shiggy met and were photographed together.

Drake captured the moment the duo met with a photo on Instagram. CNN revealed he captioned the photo, "Met the legend on the night we went number one." If you ask me, it's the ultimate reason to celebrate.

#DoingTheShiggy Could get you in trouble

The weirdest "side effect" from the Shiggy phenomenon is reminiscent of the plot to Footloose in a way; anyone who dares to partake in the #ShiggyChallenge in Egypt could risk doing time.

The #ShiggyChallenge has inspired all kinds of positive reactions, but not in this case. InsideEdition reveals these rules are actually in place for good reason. The outlet reported, "The challenge has become so popular in Egypt that the country’s Interior Ministry says you can do the dance for fun and in a safe environment but if you do it in the road and cause a traffic jam, you could get hit with a $167 summons and possibly a year in jail."

While we know injuries from doing the challenge have been rampant in America, let's hope these rules help.

Shiggy Has A Lady

When someone achieves the level of viral fame Shiggy has received in only two short months, it's inevitable for many to wonder about their personal lives. What is Shiggy like when he isn't creating viral content? Or, more importantly, who inspires Shiggy to continue making millions of people laugh on Instagram?

The answer could possibly be Shiggy's girlfriend, who can also be found on Instagram as Jyoubadd. Unfortunately, the couple's status could soon be no more, as the pair were recently featured in the news for Shiggy's betrayal allegations, which have turned out to be true after he took to Instagram to apologize to his girlfriend and fans in a video.

Drake Dreamed about The Shiggy Phenomenon

Many legendary moments in music history can be attributed to legendary performers having dreams, inspiring a memorable song or in Drake and Shiggy's case, a dance craze.

According to MaybachMedia, the duo created a video for Shiggy's Instagram, showcasing the challenge to be a product of Drake's subconscious. Drake hilariously tries to describe the nightmare he just woke up from where he mentions "this kid from New York who spits when he talks all the time did some dance to it, and the world did the dance, and then Will Smith was there!"

Of course, Shiggy comes into Drake's trailer at the end of the video, as his busy producer. What a nightmare!

Your Dentist Does The Shiggy

When Googling "dentist," you'll find "Dentist Shiggy Challenge" is one of the first selections! As a result of a viral dance craze, there's no surprise when countless interpretations of the dance appear on YouTube, but so few gain notoriety like the video of a dentist providing the world with his own take on the #ShiggyChallenge!

Turns out, Keke (and the rest of America), digs his dance. The response to Dr. Rich Constantine's interpretation sent him all the way to Good Morning America! Constantine told Good Morning America, "It was surreal! I've never seen anything like that before. I've maybe gotten a couple thousand views before at best. That's it. Never expected anything like this."

Shiggy Isn't In The Video, Or Is He?

With the notoriety of Shiggy's dance, it's both easy to forget there is an actual music video for In My Feelings, and also that the video does not include an appearance by Shiggy amongst its all-star lineup!

Understandably, Shiggy's identity has been shaped by the song so much that he's had to speak out and remind fans the video is its own separate masterpiece! He showed screenshots of a recent "ask me a question" session on his Instagram story. He denied appearing in the video, but it seems like the story isn't over yet! Complex recently updated their article reporting the story by adding a note from Shiggy; "Everything I say is a joke."

When the music video premiered a few weeks later, fans got the answer to the mystery when Shiggy appeared in its video!

Will Smith Did The Shiggy

Everyone's personal "I've made it" moment might be different, but it's probably fair to say Shiggy must have been impressed after the Fresh Prince himself joined the countless other celebrities who paid tribute to the #InMyFeelingsChallenge with their own interpretations!

The first few selections for Will Smith on Google are related to his "In My Feelings" challenge!

Smith took his tribute to the next level as he filmed himself dancing to the song atop a bridge in Budapest! According to SimpleMost, even Will was a little nervous while making the video. His Instagram caption read, "Last day in Budapest. I woke up #InMyFeelings,” the actor wrote on Instagram. “I’m a Keep It 100%, I was terrified up there. That’s why my dance moves are all stiff!"

Shiggy's Mom Is Into It

There's nothing like knowing your mother is proud of your success, and Shiggy's mom is no exception! She's known her son has been destined for success for ages, and she's on board with her son's creation.

"Mama Shiggy" spoke to the New York Post about her son's success. She revealed, "I am a proud mother! I hope it will help his career. He is happy about it [and] I want more success for him." If history does indeed repeat itself, she won't have to worry.

There are countless renditions of fans and their mothers doing the Shiggy challenge on the Internet, but none compare to the version featuring Shiggy and his mother taking on the challenge!

The 'Stranger Things' Cast Have Shigged It Up

Netflix's hit original series Stranger Things has captured the hearts of millions for many reasons! The '80s-based science fiction show has revived the career of Winona Ryder, exposed a new generation to The Clash, and most definitely influenced an increase in waffle sales! The show has also blessed us with the next generation of actors, who have become celebrities overnight, quickly holding a strong influence on the most important current trends!

Stranger Things cast members, Millie Bobby Brown and Noah Schnapp, took on the viral dance of the Summer with their own interpretation of the Shiggy challenge, and fans remain "in their feelings" about the video, which has gone viral too!

Everyone's doing it

Law enforcement all over the world have had a time this summer after the debut of the In My Feelings challenge, both having to attend to a number of incidents happening as a result of people getting hurt after filming their own videos, but some police officers have had time to put a more fun spin on the experience with the song!

In DC, police officers took time out of their busy schedules to film their own version of the "In My Feelings" challenge. According to the local DC Fox station, the team posted their video to Twitter, tagging both Shiggy and Drake in their post!

You Too, Can Book Shiggy For Parties

For those of us who have been deep into our feelings, (I know, I should stop with the references), about Shiggy and his viral dance craze, we can dream of having celebrity-filled parties featuring both Drake and Shiggy on the guest list, plus the countless other celebrities such as Will Smith and Ciara who have made their own interpretations of the dance!

Well, maybe part of this fantasy can become reality. A quick browse on Shiggy's official Facebook page leads us to a very crucial piece of information; the booking information for Shiggy is listed! Who knows, maybe Shiggy will be available to lead your next A-list function in the In My Feelings challenge!
