Recently TheRichest had the opportunity to conduct an email interview with Matteo Perin, the man responsible for turning John Travolta into one of the most notorious criminals in history.

John Travolta will be playing mobster John Gotti in the upcoming biopic Gotti. The film will be released sometime this year. Lionsgate has yet to announced an official date after pushing back the release last December in order to gain a wider distribution for the movie.

Perin made an interesting discovery as he was researching Gotti, in order to dress Travolta properly. As it turns out Perin was friends with someone who knew Gotti and had dinner with him. Although our chat with him was brief, we learned some very cool and interesting information about how John Travolta nailed the Gotti look.

TheRichest: Recently, you were responsible for the clothing John Travolta wore when he played infamous gangster John Gotti. How do you go about mimicking a figure? Does that restrict your creative process, or do you see it as more of a challenge to replicate a style like that?

Perin: I don’t see it as a restriction, having the opportunity to replicate the look of such a high-profile figure in our history. I enjoyed the process very much- doing research and really working to create something that John Gotti would have been proud to wear and mold that on the body of John Travolta.

TR: To really nail the “John Gotti Look” you revealed that you discovered one of your clients even went to dinner with him. How did you figure that out? What kind of information were you able to gather for your research

Perin: Yeah, that was funny. I was talking to this friend/client of mine and mentioned I was doing some research to dress someone. The name Gotti came up and he told me about his dinner encounter with him many years ago in New York. It was the only time he met him, but described the encounter and the personality of John Gotti so well that I felt like I was there eating with them. This really helped me during the process of creating the outfits.

Moviegoers only see the finished film but it is always cool when you have the chance to talk behind the scenes details. It can’t be easy turning an actor into a character based on a real person but based on the trailer for Gotti, Matteo Perin did an amazing job.
