The future is here, China has officially unveiled the first ever AI news anchors. Artificial intelligence has been taking the world of science by storm, and behold, they have just upped the ante.
According to CNN, China’s state-run press agency has welcomed two additions to its team of journalists – two news presenters powered by artificial intelligence. The anchors, both dressed in a suit and tie, are able to learn from live broadcast videos and read texts as naturally as a professional news anchor would on television.
The news anchors were first put into use at the ongoing 2018 World Internet Conference in Wuzhen, Zheijang. The broadcast began with what appeared to be a human news anchor, however, we were shocked to find out, it was in fact, artificial intelligence. “Hello everyone, I am an English Artificial Intelligence Anchor. This is my very first day in Xinhua News Agency”, said that anchor in its introductory video.

The AI anchor was modeled after the mannerisms and voice of Zhang Zao, who is Xinhua’s real English-language presenter, and Qiu Hao, Xinhua’s real Chinese-language presenter. An AI system has essentially been used in order to synthesize the presenters’ voices, lip movements, and expressions based solely on the real presenters and video footage of them.
These digital news presenters are capable of working 24 hours a day, which can ultimately reduce news production costs and improve efficiency during breaking news reports. Although many would be led to believe this is the first step in replacing real-life journalists, it is quite the contrary.
More news and information can be delivered to a larger audience with the use of these AI anchors, all while utilizing real-life journalists and news anchors during day-time hours, and as a means to relay pertinent, reliable, relevant, and important news in a human fashion that no force of digital AI can replace. With the recent addition of the AI anchors, China has now become one of the leading global hubs for AI development in recent years.
AI has been utilized in countless fields from finance, healthcare, and manufacturing. Let us know your thoughts on whether this new AI presenter is cool, or creepy?
