Avengers: Endgame Writers Reveal An Epic Battle That Didn't Make The Final Draft

While most of the world is trying to get over the events of Avengers: Endgame, its writers have revealed some of the early ideas they had for the movie.

It should really go without saying, but just in case, this article contains major spoilers regarding Avengers: Endgame. If you are one of the handful of people that hasn't seen the epic blockbuster yet, then we suggest you look away now. Okay, now that's out of the way, who is still recovering from Endgame? Everyone? Yeah, we feel you.

Honestly, we're struggling to find anything we didn't like about Endgame. It tied together 11 years worth of movies perfectly. That might sound callous considering we watched the most emotional on-screen death of a superhero ever, but that only added to making the movie as great as it was. However, Endgame writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have opened up to the New York Times about some of the ideas they hashed out for the film early on.

History dictates that writing a movie which includes time travel can be an absolute minefield. However, Endgame did a pretty good job of it. That required a lot of brainpower to pull off though, and some ideas didn't make the cut. One major plot point that was altered involved all of the surviving Avengers heading to Asgard instead of just Thor and Rocket.

In that alternate storyline, Iron Man ends up clashing with Heimdall, the guardian of Asgard. Heimdall was killed by Thanos at the very beginning of Infinity War. Due to his battle with Iron Man not making it into the final script, that meant poor Idriss Elba was nowhere to be seen in Endgame. Alas, what could have been.

Iron Man versus Heimdall isn't the only thing that didn't make it into the final draft of the script. The writers also discussed Avengers traveling to Dr. Strange's house and S.H.I.E.L.D HQ when going back in time. It was actually co-director Joe Russo who suggested that a handful of them go back to the battle of the New York which took place during the first Avengers movie. As ideas go, that turned out to be a pretty good one.
