She appears to be one of the most beloved television personalities in history. Since coming onto the daytime talk show scene, Ellen DeGeneres has been laughing, playing games, and dancing her way into the hearts of millions of fans. She’s made daytime talk shows fun again, has gotten guests who love to appear beside her, and has given away millions of dollars to worthwhile causes, animal groups, and struggling families. How can you not love someone like that?

But, some will have you believe that everything you see on the surface is not necessarily how it is underneath. Sure, Ellen has millions of loyal fans and is beloved by many, but she’s allegedly got a mean streak. Whether it’s a competitive edge or a personal vendetta against certain people, there are a handful of celebrities that are not fans. In fact, they can’t stand Ellen... at all.

Who in Hollywood is on which side of the fence? Are celebs like Melissa McCarthy, Jennifer Aniston, Drew Barrymore, Liza Minelli, and Kathy Griffin a fan or not so much? What about Ellen’s own staff? What do they have to say about how she acts when the cameras aren’t rolling?

For the record, we love Ellen. We think she supports tremendous causes, does so much good for so many people, and has changed the talk show game in a positive way. We also believe that way more people love her than don’t. Here are eight people who are huge fans and seven who she’s rubbed the wrong way.

Love Ellen: Melissa McCarthy

The always funny and somewhat wacky Melissa McCarthy is one of Ellen’s biggest fans. She was a special guest at Ellen’s 60th birthday party, and she’s often a guest on her show. You can see that when the two get together, there is a ton of chemistry. McCarthy often does reveals on Ellen’s show and gives her first dibs on really big news.

A huge movie star now, McCarthy has a somewhat raunchy sense of humor which is a stark contrast to what Ellen often offers on her show, but you can tell McCarthy also had a heart of gold. While the two may offer different kinds of humor, they are very good friends with a lot in common.

Not A Fan: Paula Abdul

Paula Abdul was said to be angry at Ellen for replacing her on American Idol. Well, at least that’s the rumor. Ellen may go down as being the most unqualified judge ever to be on a singing show considering she was never a singer, recording artist, or a producer, but a lot of people likely thought she was better at the gig than Abdul who was often seen as “too nice” or “too emotional.”

It probably angers Abdul to know that she didn’t get the send-off that a lot of the other original judges got and that when she did leave, Ellen was hired as her replacement. I like Ellen, but I’d be upset too if I were in Paula’s shoes. To know how little producers thought of you to replace you with someone inexperienced but popular probably stung. Perhaps, if Abdul was really that bothered, she should have stuck around.

Love Ellen: Justin Timberlake

Who doesn’t like Justin Timberlake, right? Well, Ellen loves him and Justin seems to love her right back. Ellen’s admiration for musical guests and funny actors is well-known. But when you mix them together, you get a work crush which is almost what Ellen has for Justin. He comes on the show often to surprise guests or tell Ellen about how well things are going in his marriage to Jessica Biel. To their defense, they are one of Hollywood’s cutest couples. It’s almost annoying, actually.

If there’s a goofy skit or game to be played with a celeb, there are pretty good odds that Timberlake might be there. And, if he keeps writing songs she can dance to, he’ll stay one of her favorites. Hard to say if Ellen has a male friend she likes more than Justin.

Not A Fan: Liza Minnelli

We talked about Ellen being nice and then showed that this may not always be the case with the story about Drew Barrymore. Well, if what is rumored to have been said by Ellen about Liza Minnelli is true, maybe Ellen’s not so sweet. Apparently, DeGeneres called Liza a drag queen while hosting the 2015 Oscars.

She “poked fun” at Minnelli when Minnelli wasn’t there to defend herself, and when Liza asked for an apology, it sounds like Ellen just took more jabs insinuating that Minnelli should lighten up. It is odd that Ellen would make such comments considering her battle for equality and acceptance as a publicly gay celebrity. Considering Minnelli is not a drag queen, it was a pretty brutal thing to say.

Love Ellen: Portia De Rossi

I suppose we can’t make a list about people who love and hate Ellen without adding the love of her life, at least, according to the vows she took. Portia de Rossi is Ellen’s wife, and the two have been together for quite some time now.

Portia rarely makes appearances on Ellen’s show, preferring to stay out of that picture. But, she does make a ton of red carpet appearances alongside her partner, and the couple has taken to a lot of the same causes. Portia is an actress but isn’t working outside of a few TV shows that ended in 2017. Ellen and Portia have lasted a long time so it looks like they’re the real deal.

Not A Fan: Caitlyn Jenner

Caitlyn Jenner will have you believe that she was set up by Ellen if you listen to her side of the story. Allegedly, Jenner was invited on the show to talk about her transgender change and same-sex marriage and Ellen let her have it, saying that Caitlyn was a hypocrite for not supporting same-sex marriage. Caitlyn claims that Ellen told her it was okay that Caitlyn was a conservative and not supportive (but not against it) but called her out live in front of everyone after she said she wouldn’t.

Jenner did admit, “At first, I was not for it,” but that DeGeneres was still upset by her taking so long to come around. Ellen said during a Howard Stern interview, “Maybe [Jenner] didn’t want to dance with me [on the show] because I’m a lesbian.” Ellen even got Howard to say, “Yah, I cant believe Caitlyn’s not for marriage equality.”

Jenner responded to the whole dancing thing by saying, “She never asked me to dance.”

Love Ellen: Jennifer Aniston

Jennifer Aniston is good friends with Ellen DeGeneres, and their chemistry is undeniable. Talking everything from tabloids to clothing, Aniston has been on the show several times, is always up for a good laugh, and loves to talk Friends with Ellen, even appearing for a mini-reunion on her show. The two often hang out when not on Ellen’s show to celebrate birthdays and enjoy casual dinners.

Ellen once had Aniston’s ex, Justin Theroux, on the show and said, “Somehow she (Reese Witherspoon) thinks she’s Jen’s best friend when I explained to her that I’m Jen’s best friend. And I just want you to clear it up with the world that I am Jen’s best friend.” This was all in good fun and they may not be besties, but they are extremely close.

Not A Fan: Co-Workers And Staff

The true measure of a person is often how well they get along with the people who work for them. Well, if any of the rumors are true about how some of Ellen’s employees feel, she’s got some explaining to do. Speculation is that some of her staff get together after hours and discuss Ellen’s mistreatment towards them. The word “peasants” has floated around and some staff have apparently quit over her behavior.

Clearly, this isn’t true of everyone, but there are whispers that this isn’t a bigger story because her staff is afraid to speak up. Ellen has clout and some view her as bitter, willing to stop them from ever getting a job in Hollywood again if they go public. This story seems way too out there to be true, but if it’s even close to accurate, I guess not everyone at the Ellen show dances all the time.

Love Ellen: Ryan Seacrest

We know Ryan Seacrest loves Ellen because he thinks everyone should love Ellen. A talk show host himself, he once said, “Everyone hearts Ellen DeGeneres. What’s not to love?” For those that she’s close to, that’s probably true and Seacrest and Ellen are close, having worked together on American Idol and his being a guest on her show.

Seacrest is one of the hardest working personalities in music and TV, and that’s also something Ellen respects. Undoubtedly, he looked up to Ellen as he was making it big and their love for music gives them something they share. I’m sure Ellen will be watching closely as American Idol comes back to television this year with Seacrest as the host.

Not A Fan: Kathy Griffin

There are a lot of reasons not to like Kathy Griffin. The often-raunchy and over-the-top comic is pretty much blacklisted from Hollywood today, and her relationship and willingness to call out other celebrities, including Ellen, hasn’t helped much.

In a book Griffin wrote she said, “I’m almost positive a certain beloved daytime talk show host once had me kicked out of a backstage dressing room at the Emmy Awards.” Everyone knew she meant Ellen and she went on to say, “This person, who has short blonde hair, has a mean streak that all of Hollywood knows about.” She pretty much sealed her fate.

Griffin was also well aware of a monologue that Ellen did about how rude and mean Griffin could be which she also said in a magazine interview. Ellen said, “I know she had a big thing about wanting to be on the show, and we didn’t book her ... I didn’t ban her from the show, because first you have to be on the show to be banned.”

Nearly a decade later, they still don’t like each other. Ellen once called Griffin to give her a lashing over another comment Griffin made, and Griffin didn’t back down but did cry after she hung up the phone.

Love Ellen: Pharrell Williams

Pharell Williams was a special guest at Ellen’s 60th birthday bash and both are quite close, with Ellen being a huge fan and visa versa. In fact, they are such good friends that Pharell ditched one of the singers he did a duet with for the Hidden Figures soundtrack to support Ellen over her.

Gospel singer Kim Burrell was scheduled to perform a duet with Pharrell on an episode of Ellen’s show, but she was banned after preaching anti-gay sermons. Ellen immediately tweeted that she wouldn’t be on the show. Pharell agreed and said that he couldn’t condone that kind of behavior. Ellen was honored with the Medal of Freedom for her role in pushing America ‘in the direction of justice,’ and it’s no wonder she refused to let Burell on the show.

Not A Fan: Piers Morgan

Piers Morgan has a way of getting under people’s skin, and he takes a lot of offence to things people say and do. Sometimes, he’s right on the money. Other times, he’s far too serious. He took issue with Ellen after a tweet DeGeneres sent out in 2017 to wish Katy Perry a happy birthday.

“Happy birthday, @KatyPerry! It’s time to bring out the big balloons,” DeGeneres wrote, while the Twitter picture showed Ellen jokingly looking at Perry’s larger bossom. While maybe not in the best taste, it was clearly a joke that Piers didn’t find funny. Others weren’t fans of the Tweet either, considering the Weinstein scandal with celebs like Michael Rapaport suggesting if a man had sent this Tweet, it would have been met with a huge backlash.

Piers Morgan made reference to Ellen’s past mistake of posting a shirtless photo of Chris Hemsworth during her People’s Choice Awards acceptance speech. Morgan claimed he’d never been so offended by anything in his entire life. Perhaps a bit much, but it showed that he wasn’t a big fan of the comedienne.

Love Ellen: Sofia Vergara

Sofia Vergara is the amazingly beautiful Modern Family star who also has an unbelievably good sense of humor about herself. It’s on full display each and every time she’s on Ellen as the two laugh about her accent and take on life during most of her interviews. You can tell that the two genuinely enjoy hanging out with one another. Perhaps no two people together can make fans smile as much as these two do.

The best part is that they don’t always seem to get along 100 percent of the time. It makes it even more fun to watch them disagree then laugh about it when all is said and done.

Love Ellen: Oprah Winfrey

Oprah Winfrey and Ellen DeGeneres have been friends for years. In fact, Oprah’s show is where Ellen announced to the world that she was gay. But, the relationship wasn’t always nice and cozy. There were rumors that when Ellen first got her show and it catapulted in popularity, Oprah was not happy. Ellen’s success was cutting into her daytime ratings which were the best in the business at that time.

But today, that’s all water under the bridge. Oprah realized that there was room for everyone and moved on to form her own channel, not working a daily show. Since then, the two have been closer than ever. Whether they were competing or not, there was always a healthy of level of respect for one another.

Not A Fan: Drew Barrymore

We often think of Ellen as the nicest person in the world, and most people would agree. One person who does not is Drew Barrymore, who Ellen called large while she was pregnant. We’re not sure what the motivation was behind doing so and perhaps Ellen either didn’t know or was joking, but Barrymore was not impressed. Rumors say that even Portia (Ellen’s wife) was embarrassed.

The two women also had a working relationship that went sour. They worked together to launch a show on NBC called First Dates in April of 2017. Executive-produced by DeGeneres and narrated by Drew Barrymore, the two did not mesh, both thinking that they should have a lot more say in the production than the other would allow. Between the two issues, Barrymore won’t be sending a holiday card anytime soon.
