Friends started in 1994 and for the next decade became one of the most influential television shows to ever air. It's just unfortunate that some of the cast members you grew up loving didn't manage to keep that success going. Such as Eddie Cahill, whose short-term stint as Tag Jones may go down as the best thing he ever did with his career as his show Conviction was canceled after one year.
But to be fair, the same fate met Elliot Gould and his failed "comedy" 9JKL. And as for Gunther? Well, at least he can always say he appeared in over 100 episodes. Even the main cast hasn't been immune to what some people would call bad luck, as Lisa Kudrow is currently working on a made-for-TV movie. And as for Matthew Perry and Courteney Cox? Both currently have no projects on the horizon.
Thankfully for fans of Friends, it's not all bad news if you want to follow the gang outside of Central Perk. Such as Jennifer Aniston who was recently named as the 3rd highest paid actress and also has a very exciting new project with Reese Witherspoon. Or Matt LeBlanc whose sitcom, Man with a Plan, was renewed for a 3rd season. David Schwimmer will also be playing a love interest of Grace, on Will and Grace. Though the best career of any Friends cast member may be Jon Favreau who went from Pete Becker to become one of the most influential directors and producers in Hollywood! But Paul Rudd's role as Ant-Man may give Jon a run for his money.
These are 25 Things That The Cast of Friends Is Up To Today.
There are many people out there who would love to see Friends come back on the air. But while that may not happen anytime soon, Will and Grace, was able to return to the air after a long time away. One of the most exciting parts about the show may be that David Schwimmer will appear in 5 episodes as a love interest of Grace.
“He’s as far away from Ross as he can possibly get because he’s already mastered Ross. I think people will be excited to see him in our world playing a different part," said Debra Messing.
I'm not going to lie, when I first saw advertisements for Man with a Plan, I definitely uttered a small groan. After all, it's not like Matt LeBlanc sitcom Joey was a win! But Matt, to his credit, has managed to perhaps find his next big success story. The series has received several boosts from CBS including the 2nd season getting bumped up to 21 episodes and is renewed for season 3. Which means if you find yourself missing Matt, this series may be well worth your time as at least it doesn't seem to be canceled anytime soon.
Matthew Perry has hopefully enough money saved up that there are many things in his life that he doesn't have to worry about. But there is no amount of money that can guarantee you are going to have perfect health. And for Perry, his health may be a big area of concern at the moment. It was recently announced that Perry underwent surgery. Which means that I also hope the cast and crew from Friends have sent him loving thoughts.
It is very possible that there are some made-for-TV movies that you absolutely love to watch. And if you were to pick one to bet on being good, maybe Lisa Kudrow attaching her name to the project will help. Though maybe it's also a sign that her career might not be going as well as she had wanted it to. The movie, titled Bright Futures sees Emily Ratajkowski play the lead role, whereas Kudrow is the narrator. Which sadly, also means you probably won't get to see her!
Courteney Cox deserves a tremendous amount of credit for finding success after her time on Friends ended. It's not as if she needed the money, but Cougar Town did go on to have over 100 episodes aired before ending. Which means Cox's current retirement - as she has no upcoming television or movie projects scheduled - is at the very least, well justified! Even if not a bit disappointing for fans who would love to get to enjoy Cox in another role.
Apple is one of the biggest companies in the world, but they realized that to stay that way, they may want to look into producing their own original programming. And what better way to do that than to sign two huge names for an upcoming drama that is centered around a morning show. Witherspoon and Aniston got the chance to work together on Friends as Witherspoon played her sister, Jill back in 2000. Which means the two should logically have plenty to talk about!
There is no question that James Michael Tyler (aka, Gunther) did not bring home the same type of cash that the main cast and crew did. But who didn't love seeing him interact with the gang whenever the script called for it? But if you ever had aspirations of seeing Tyler outside of Central Perk, you may have to think again. It appears that Tyler's last acting project came all the way back in 2013 when he appeared in the project, Modern Music that was given the boot after only 5 episodes.
Jon Favreau's role in Friends may have little to do with his current success. Because Jon Favreau is getting to work on his own television series that is scheduled to be set around Star Wars. Which I'm sure you can understand is both a lot of pressure, but also perhaps a dream come true for Favreau. It's not clear as to how involved Favreau will be with the project, but he has been named as one of the executive producers and if he so chooses, will surely be allowed to direct at least an episode or two!
There is another entry on our list that talks about how Matt LeBlanc's recent show, Man with a Plan, has been renewed for a 3rd season. But Elliot Gould's attempts to make it back on the world of television definitely did not go even kind of as well. His sitcom, 9JKL made it's debut back in October. But by the time it was May, CBS was making the judgment call that they had seen enough from the series and it was canceled.
You might not watch Christina Pickles latest project, Break a Hip, in the same way that you would Friends, but her web series is something you may want to put on your radar. Pickles was even nominated for an Emmy for her performance at the 2018 awards; perhaps proving that while her role may not be as iconic as Monica's mother, that she is perhaps acting at the very top of her game. The first two seasons of the show is comprised of 8 episodes each, totaling around 10 minutes per episode.
If you started watching the television series, Conviction, because you loved Hayley Atwell then that is pretty understandable. As Haley is tremendous in several of her roles, including of course, most prominently Peggy Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (and shortlived series, Agent Carter). Sadly, shortlived is a description that also applied to her show Conviction that was canceled after 13 episodes. Much to the chagrin of the other lead, Eddie Cahill, who you may struggle to recognize as Rachel's short-term boyfriend and assistant, Tag Jones.
I wouldn't blame you for a second if the reason you start tuning into the television series, Mom, is because you need more Allison Janney who has been outstanding her entire career including on The West Wing and I, Tonya. But the amazing writing and performance of Anna Faris may be why people keep coming back to the show. Another season has been renewed for a 6th season but if the 11 million viewers per episode from season 5 are any indication, it won't be the last one.
Tom Selleck's role on Magnum, P.I. that ran from 1980-1988 was one of the reasons why fans were excited to see him appear on Friends s a love interest to Monica. But while his role on the series was short-lived, his main project after the series has been a huge hit. Blue Bloods has been on the air since 2010 and sees Selleck playing Police Commissioner Francis Reagan. While you may have some binge-watching to do, a 9th season of the show will be airing in September.
Matthew Perry doesn't exactly play the serious role on a very frequent basis when he played the role of Chandler Bing. But when you consider his latest - and at the moment, last project - was playing Ted Kennedy, you can understand he had to tap into some different emotions. The television miniseries, The Kennedys: Decline and Fall aired in April 2017 and also saw Katie Holmes take on one of the lead roles as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Fans of Perry may find themselves hoping he finds another successful miniseries like this to try and rejuvenate his career.
Another entry on our list talks about how Courteney Cox is seemingly enjoying her retirement. But if you're desperate to see how Cox looked recently, your best bet is going to be when she was one of the guest judges on the television show, The Gong Show. I'm sure trying to do an impersonation of any of the iconic Friends characters would probably be a pretty good way to make Cox roll her eyes and gong you though! Isla Fisher and Will Forte also played the role of judges on the episode.
Jennifer Aniston may not be an actress you think about when looking at some of the best names in Hollywood, but she has definitely managed to continue doing very well for herself. Something that is perhaps not hurt by the residuals she may be getting from Friends! It was reported by Forbes that Aniston was the 3rd highest paid actress in 2018, bringing in $19.5 million. A number that may skyrocket in 2019 when she starts filming her new series with Reese Witherspoon that will pay her $1.25 million per episode.
Riverdale may never become as popular in society as Friends did, but Cole Sprouse is probably having a lot more fun with Riverdale then whenever the writers of Friends realized that they hadn't talked about Ben for a while. Especially because Cole has one of the best roles on the series, playing Jughead Jones. He's even dating his on-screen love, Lili Reinhart, which you might agree makes it a lot more enjoyable for him to get up in the morning and go into work. Though the opposite may be true if they end up splitting!
Jon Favreau did his best to dominate the octagon in the role of Pete Becker, but he's probably a lot more comfortable getting to sit in the director's chair. But can you imagine the amount of stress pressure that he must be feeling at the moment, as he is currently directing the live-action version of The Lion King. You could definitely make the argument that this movie is not necessary, but after the incredible success of The Beauty and the Beast, there is no way that Disney wasn't going to "live-action" all of their classic Disney stories.
There are many actors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe who you may love getting to see kick some serious tail. But for fans of the television series Friends, nobody may give you more joy to see than Paul Rudd. Who has seemingly gone from Phoebe's husband, Mike Hannigan, to saving the world as Scott Lang! Rudd's recent runs as the character include appearing in Avengers: Infinity War as well as finding great success with the sequel to Ant-Man, Ant-Man and the Wasp.
There wasn't anything wrong when it came to the acting in the first Avatar film, but I wouldn't blame you if you left the theater and all you could talk about was the amazing visuals. Thankfully, Giovanni Ribisi, who played Phoebe's brother on the series, seems like he is going to have several opportunities to become the best part of the franchise. Along with being one of the leads in the first one, Ribisi is under contract to appear in the next 5 Avatar films. Do we need 6 Avatar films? Probably not. But who'd blame Ribisi for saying yes!
Aisha Tyler is probably well aware of the fact that she was one of the few actors who got a role on the series despite not being Caucasian. But sadly for Aisha, her storyline was iffy at best, as she jumped between Ross and Joey before running off with guest star, Greg Kinnear. She's definitely found a lot more stability in the world of voice-over, as she plays Lana on the series Archer. Tyler has also appeared in the video games Halo: Reach and Watch Dogs.
Anna Faris and Chris Pratt seemed to be very happy. But appearances can be deceiving, and the two separated last year. When talking about people's reaction, Faris said,
“I had a little bit of a childish feeling of ‘Oh come on, grow up’ — a little bit of anger. But that’s not fair either because I cultivated it. We intentionally cultivated this idea of like ‘Look at this beautiful family.’ There were so many moments that were like that but like anything on social media, you don’t post the bad stuff.”
You may have grown up loving, The Jungle Book. And while that may have made you apprehensive to go into theaters and see the live-action version of The Jungle Book, those fears were hopefully unfounded. The movie smashed the box office, earning over $950 million and critics praised it, giving it a score on Rotten Tomatoes of 95%. Favreau was surely happy with those results, even if it may have raised the stakes for the sequel, Jungle Book 2 which will also be directed by Favreau.
David Schwimmer definitely showed off a different side of him when he appeared in the television drama, The People v. O.J. Simpson. And while there were many impressive actors in the show, including Cuba Gooding Jr in the lead role, Schwimmer may have been the most impressive of all of them; playing Robert Kardashian. Let's hope if American Crime Story comes back for another run that Schwimmer will be one of the many actors who get the call to come back.
Jennifer Aniston is no stranger to having her relationships being scrutinized by the tabloid media. But people were hoping she had finally picked a winner with Justin Theroux. Sadly, after 2.5 years of marriage, the two announced that they had called it splits, though it is hopeful that there is still a friendly relationship between the two as their official statement including them saying,
"They are two best friends who have decided to part ways as a couple, but look forward to continuing our cherished friendship."
