For years, the part of Wonder Woman was one fans loved to debate on. True, choosing off looks was a key thing as you needed a gorgeous woman to pull off the costume. But you also had to pick someone believable as a warrior as well as for the part of a woman meant to lead and inspire others. That means you can’t go by just how hot a gal looks, you need acting chops too. Sure, Megan Fox may have looked nice in the outfit but it’s hard to think she’d ever pull off the acting part well enough. There’s also how the star power could overwhelm the role. At first, Gal Gadot seemed an odd choice for the part, a bit thin and best known for the Fast and Furious movies. But she proved the doubters wrong by making Wonder Woman a fantastic smash hit and Gadot herself a major success and inspiration. That carried over into Justice League and many are hopeful for the upcoming sequel.

But there’s always the chance things can change. Just look at how many on-screen Batmans we’ve had. Rumors abound that the poor reaction to every other DC movie besides WW means Warner Bros might reboot the whole thing and thus a new Wonder Woman would be needed. There are even, surprisingly a lot of people who don't want her there at all because of her strange past.

There are plenty of candidates who can pull it off. Some are veterans with good chops while others are more unknown, but it would not be the first time that an unknown actress could make it work. They can handle the action, have the lovely looks but also the power to make this goddess on Earth believable. Here are 20 actresses who could take on the role of Wonder Woman to remind Gadot she’s lucky to get this part.

Lynn Collins

In terms of looks, she’s nearly a goddess already. The gorgeous actress got attention on True Blood and then some notable movie roles. That includes a Martian lady in John Carter, a role sadly overshadowed by the movie’s mega-bomb status. There was also her role in playing Silver Fox in X-Men Origins: Wolverine so she has comic book experience already.

Currently with a recurring role on Lethal Weapon, Collins may be a bit wary of getting into another major franchise given her sad experience with big-budget films. However, casting her as Diana would make sense, the woman just comes off regal and flashy for the part and would make a splendid Wonder Woman. She may be a bit unknown but so was Gadot and Collins can finally get her shot at the top to shine well.

Cobie Smulders

The Canadian-born actress came to fame as Robin on the long-running smash How I Met Your Mother, proving her great comedy chops. But she also showed a more serious, action-oriented side with her role as Maria Hill in The Avengers. She was an easy highlight, moving onto reprising the role for some sequels and Agents of SHIELD and a great sight in that leather suit.

Smulders has kept busy with stuff like the Netflix comedy Friends From College and the Jack Reacher sequel showed she can handle action stuff well. Casting her as Diana might be an offbeat choice but Smulders would look great in the costume. She also has a good comedic charm to help connect her to the audience and make Diana more relatable. Her turn might be a bit lighter but would probably make it more fun.

Kate Beckinsale

It’s hard to argue with her not being able to pull off the action parts. In four movies spanning 13 years, Kate Beckinsale wowed in the Underworld series. The sight of her in leather battling vampires and werewolves was amazing and showed Beckinsale as a great star. She also has a long resume of dramatic roles like Pearl Harbor, Counterbrand and more.

Utterly beautiful, Beckinsale is practically a goddess already and has shown her lovely red carpet style off numerous times. Beckinsale could be great in the role with her accent and charm to win folks over. She has a good sense of humor but amazingly tough in all the right ways and her casting as Diana seems great. It helps that Beckinsale barely looks like she’s aged. Her star power helps but seeing Beckinsale pulling off the action can be terrific for the role.

Rebecca Ferguson

This Swedish star has been nicely on the rise and an elevation to a comic book movie seems a logical step. She broke out starring in the Starz drama The White Queen which earned her several award nominations and was quite good with her appearances in the classic regal gowns.

In 2015, she stole Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation right out from under Tom Cruise. Her role as the spy was fantastic, she slayed every fight scene that she was in. She’s ready to reprise the part for the upcoming MI: Fallout and showed a lovely side in The Greatest Showman. Truly gorgeous, she can back it up with good talent, a fantastic presence and the action as well. Put it all together and she could be a fine Diana and impress as a true wonder on screen to prove you don’t need a mega A-list star to make the role work.

Charlize Theron

Time seems to have stood still for this woman. Charlize Theron still looks as utterly gorgeous now as when she broke out in movies in 1996. Her beauty cannot be denied but Theron has backed it up with terrific acting skills and shining so well in so many roles. She can look fantastic on screen but has the power to bury that beauty as she did for her Oscar-winning role in Monster.

Theron has lately been remaking herself into an action starlet and she has been doing a great job of it. She was the true star of Mad Max Fury Road with her ferocious beauty and fire. Then Atomic Blonde had her doing fantastic fight scenes. Match that with the ability to pull off wild parts (like Snow White and the Huntsman) and Theron could pull it all off as Diana. She’d have to dye her locks black but she’s proven capable of pulling off such a move and still looking great. The actress is practically a Wonder Woman already with her skills and talent, it’s just time to make it official.

Cote de Pablo

NCIS was already a major hit for CBS in its first two seasons. But it became bigger when Cote de Pablo joined in season three as Ziva, a Mossad agent working with the team. Born in Chile, de Pablo has a gorgeous air to herself that leant well to the role of Ziva, able to handle great action scenes and often hot outfits.

Her banter with Michael Weatherly’s Tony was a highlight of the show and helped fuel fanfiction authors. She left the show at the start of the eleventh season, a major surprise to viewers, and while the series has still been a hit, many feel it’s lost something without her. She’s been quiet since the show ended but her talents would be good for Diana. She’s not just gorgeous but possesses a great lush accent and alluring presence needed for the part. De Pablo deserves a comeback and playing Wonder Woman sure would be it.

Hayley Atwell

It took one role to elevate this actress from a nobody to a star. Haley Atwell had some credits to her name already in her native England like Mansfield Park and The Pillars of The Earth. In 2011, she became majorly famous as Peggy Carter in Captain America: The First Avenger. Her take on this World War II agent was so great that it earned her a TV spin-off with fans loving the capable Peggy fighting for respect in a man’s world.

That alone would make her a great pick for Diana but Atwell has made it even better with her various turns, mixing great humor with her action. She had the short-lived Conviction to rock a great American accent and show a way to get under the radar despite her looks. Atwell continues to be busy with various roles, but we're sure she would drop it all for this. If nothing else, it would be a brilliant touch having a woman who was the backup for one star-spangled hero ending up becoming another.

Katrina Law

The woman has a serious knack for playing warrior women already. Katrina Law was born in Philadelphia but seems to have an exotic air to her that lends itself well in her various roles. She came to fame as Mira on the beloved Starz series Spartacus that showed off her great beauty. Law has moved into a variety of other roles, mostly notably Nyssa, the nobler daughter of Ra’s al Guhl in the hit Arrow.

That’s showed great drive with her amazing skills at archery. She was both beautiful and hilarious. That might lend itself well to Diana, especially with Law’s exotic looks and her ability to pull off an accent so lush, you’d never believe she’s a native –born American. Law just needs the right character to take off on TV and Wonder Woman would be a good one. She’s used to uniforms already as Nyssa so can pull off the costume and look fantastic as the Amazon.

Eva Green

There’s something about this woman that makes her utterly compelling. The French born actress is fantastic in various roles with her flawless features, deep dark eyes and a wicked smile. She rose to fame in parts like the Crusades epic Kingdom of Heaven and showcased a great style in the Bond film Casino Royale. Green dominates in even poor films, showcasing herself as a femme fatale in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. There was also her great role as a twisted warrior in 300: Rise of an Empire that showed amazing fighting skills.

Green also played a dark version of the evil Morgan Le Fey in the short-lived Starz Camelot. It’s easy to see her just on her skin-baring roles but Green has a fantastic power in any of her performances and that would make her a stunning Diana, even without the costume to reign majorly.

Bridget Regan

She’s not as famous as others on this list but Bridget Regan has carved out a good career on TV and just needs the right movie role. She gained attention on the syndicated series Legend of the Seeker in a part much like Diana: A gorgeous warrior priestess who could compel people to tell the truth, often fighting in great robes and her dark hair framing her perfect features.

Since then, Regan has often specialized in roles of women who look innocent but turn out to be very deadly. That includes a Russian agent on Agent Carter, a museum expert who’s really a thief on White Collar and the duplicitous Rose on Jane the Virgin. Currently on The Last Ship, Regan has the action skills to pull off the role with great moves and look totally gorgeous in it. Again, her Seeker role was practically a model for Diana already so seeing her rise up in the part for real would be terrific.

Evangeline Lilly

From the start of Lost, Evangeline Lilly was terrific as Kate. The tough ex-con looked amazing and rather buff in the jungle setting and handled the massive stunt work and complex plotlines well. Both can serve for Diana, a character well known for a rather intricate backstory. Lilly seemed a bit ignored after the show ended but proved herself as Hope in Ant-Man, a smart and capable woman with a very tough side in fights.

The upcoming Ant-Man and the Wasp gives her more to do with her own costumed identity and if she can pull off the winged leather, she can sure pull off Amazon armor. While her turn in The Hobbit was slammed, Lilly still showed off in the role with a great accent that can work for Diana. Moving from Marvel to a DC character can be intriguing but with her dark hair, gorgeous face and affinity for action parts, Lilly could make her Wonder Woman very nice.

Emily Blunt

Once, the idea of casting Emily Blunt as Wonder Woman might seem crazy. The gorgeous British actress broke out with her scene-stealing role as the wicked assistant in The Devil Wears Prada, nicely showcasing sarcasm and good comedic chops. She’s proven herself capable of handling action, drama and even the musical Into the Woods. But Blunt rocked critics and audiences by buffing up majorly for her role as a futuristic soldier in the sci-fi favorite Edge of Tomorrow which proved she could be great in an action role.

The Huntsman: Winter’s War showed she can look like some otherworldly beauty and handle the CGI stuff majorly which would be needed. Blunt’s gorgeous looks and regal manner in many of her parts also lends itself well to Diana and with a little more muscle, can pull the part off and look like a true queen playing the Amazon princess.

Olivia Wilde

Her almost hypnotic eyes lend themselves well for the role of a woman meant to be totally dominant. Olivia Wilde came to fame with her part as “Thirteen” on House, a beautiful gal but also quite intelligent. This has carried into a variety of movie roles as she can handle drama, comedy and action well. Her turn in Tron: Legacy showcased her fighting in a tight outfit and came off truly otherworldly in Cowboys & Aliens while also a highlight of the short-lived HBO series Vinyl.

Yes, her body is fantastic as she’s shown it off a lot but Wilde also can handle both the action scenes and dramatic moments to let people connect to Diana. There’s also how she grasps the “goddess” part of the role very well. Wilde would make a fine Wonder Woman, not just because of her beauty but her inner power and many a moviegoer ready to worship her well.

Alexandra Daddario

Let’s face it, the sight of her in a costume alone would be a fantastic sight. Alexandra Daddario actually has some experience playing a Greek mythology warrior. She came to fame as Annabeth Chase, the daughter of Athena, in the Percy Jackson movies, showing both beauty and had a great skill for fighting monsters. Her TV roles have included Parenthood and, most famously True Detective with a topless scene that burned up the Internet.

Daddario has a gorgeous look to herself. She has intense eyes, a crazy body which was shown off in Baywatch, and already has the dark hair. A better actress than she’s given credit for, Daddario can do a fine job as Diana, being more than just eye candy. Her age means she can bring a nice youthful fire to the role and besides, she already knows plenty about Greek mythology.

Priyanka Chopra

Often topping lists of the most beautiful people on the planet, Priyanka Chopra already has the air for the part. But she can back it up with good talent as well. A huge star in her native India, Chopra has dominated with box office hits and numerous awards to get a huge following that could help in the part. Chopra then came to fame in the U.S. for her lead role in the ABC series Quantico, showing herself as a beautiful woman and someone who can dominate during a fight sequence.

Her utterly amazing looks with deep eyes and a lush accent make her a terrific choice for Diana. It may be a bit throwing with her background but Chopra can play a variety of nationalities and her turn as a villainess in Baywatch showed a good edge to carry the warrior side well. To have a woman as alluring and great in acting as Wonder Woman would be a solid choice and her box office power in India makes her a great international star to help as well.

Jessica Biel

Perhaps a controversial pick but Jessica Biel has shown her acting chops are better than most of the scripts she’s been given. The former 7th Heaven star has usually been cast in roles meant to show her sexy side or just the love interest. But Blade Trinity proved she had some great action chops, looking buff as this vampire hunter.

She is stunningly gorgeous and several of her red carpet outfits prove she has the bearing for Diana. Biel’s recent turn in the USA drama The Sinner has reminded people of how good an actress she can be; she just needs the right role. Playing Wonder Woman can be a good comeback for her, she has the star power needed and can handle the action scenes as well as a good dash of humor to carry it on. Biel might seem offbeat a choice but can still work to shine well as Diana.

Gemma Arterton

The British actress has done a good job marking her career in some cult genre movies. Gemma Arterton may not be a huge star but well regarded for her turns in a variety of movies, even poor ones. She played a mysterious seer in Clash of the Titans, a lovely princess in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and then starred in one half of the cult favorite Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters.

She’s even been a Bond Girl in Quantum of Solace allowing her to showcase more of her great beauty. Arterton’s great skills and acting are on display and she’s proven she can handle a big-budget CGI showcase as needed for Diana. She may need to pack on some muscle but still do a great job and her ability to play alluring roles definitely helps so Gemma can be a good Diana.

Megan Gale

She came close to doing it. It’s well known that in 2008, George Miller, writer/director of the classic Mad Max movies, was doing a version of Justice League. It looked very promising but ended up in “development hell” big-time. Miller had Megan Gale in mind for Wonder Woman, the Australian actress/model looking perfect for the role. She was strong and tough and had serious promise. Sadly, the whole project was canceled and robbed fans of seeing Gale in the part.

Miller still remembered her, casting her as Valkyrie in his smash Mad Max Fury Road where she proved her action chops quite well. She also impressed critics with her role in The Water Divider. Too bad it didn’t come to be, but we can all hope for second chances.

Jaimie Alexander

She’s already played one warrior goddess so another would be great. Jaimie Alexander had a few TV credits but launched to fame with her role as the warrior Sif in the first Thor movie. She was fantastic in the battle scenes and terrific in the armor. She proved her strength majorly, including a bad injury filming the sequel but kept going. She also reprised the role for Agents of SHIELD and did a great job to impress.

She was absent from the most recent Thor film but for good reason, as Alexander has been busy with the hit NBC series Blindspot. That has her handling plenty of stunt work. With her lush black hair and great build, Alexander can pull off Diana well. She has inner strength and terrific charm and has proven she can handle fighting in some sort of complex armor. A move from Marvel to DC would be interesting and Alexander has proven herself capable of being a goddess on screen.

Lynda Carter

It’s not as crazy as it sounds. To many, Lynda Carter remains the perfect Wonder Woman. As the star of the 1970s TV show, she not only looked gorgeous in the outfit but carried the role off well. She showed Diana a fighter but also caring for others and trying to find peaceful methods to solve a problem instead of just punching her way through. Even held back by the limitations of the 1970s, the series was good at showing her powers and fans never got enough of Diana’s great “spinning” transformations into the outfit. Carter has had a good career since but this remains her iconic role.

The fact is, the woman, at 66, still looks absolutely stunning. She showed that playing the President on Supergirl and could probably still rock the outfit. The idea of an older, experienced but still strong Diana is intriguing and seeing Carter back in that famous role would be terrific to remind folks who brought the wonder to audiences first.
