There are many reasons that actors and actresses choose to homeschool their children. Celebrities often want to be able to take their kids on the road when they're working, and homeschool is a relatively easy thing to do, as a tutor can go anywhere. As such, there's a greater flexibility that homeschooling provides and the stars won't be apart from their kids for periods of time. Others see a problem with the American school system. Angelina Jolie famously said, "I do think we live in a different age and the education system hasn’t caught up with our children and our way of life.” Others simply want to protect their kids from the paps, as most times they protect the identity of them and keep them out of the spotlight. The rarity of seeing these kids is reason enough for paps to trail and photograph them. And others fear that their kids will be bullied or in danger at a traditional school. Kim Kardashian felt "terrified that the other kids would pick on North because she's so famous!" and that was her reason to homeschool her daughter.

But homeschooling has some setbacks. At a traditional school, celeb kids can learn how to socialize, make friends and take part in groups or sports and feel a sense of school spirit,  something one-on-one tutoring can't provide. But it doesn't seem that celebs care; what's important for them is that homeschooling allows them to be with their children while at work. Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez travels around the world for concerts and appearances, as well as for her shows Shades of Blue and World of Dance. She never wants to leave Max and Emme, her twin children, behind, and so she homeschools them. She said, “They are super happy, well-adjusted, loving, caring kids, and that’s the most important thing. . . . [T]hey are with their mother. They don’t feel abandoned by a parent." Still she gets criticism because naysayers say her kids need to be in school to have friends. But it's impossible for Lopez; she's constantly on the road due to her demanding career. (Source: India)

Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett are the best parents in the world. They have open dialogues with their children, they allow them to pursue their interests (acting for son Jaden, and music for daughter Willow), and they also homeschool them in a way that's not conventional. Pinkett explained why. She said,  “For flexibility, so they can stay with us when we travel, and also because the school system in this country—public and private—is designed for the industrial age. We’re in a technological age. We don’t want our kids to memorize. We want them to learn.”

Erykah Badu

Singer Erykah Badu homeschooled all her children, including her son Seven Sirius, as well as her daughters Puma Sabti and Mars Merkaba. Most parents who homeschool their kids do so because they don't want to leave them behind for periods of time while working.  But Badu said she homeschooled Seven to give him a boost academically, to give him an advantage." She added, "So by being home-schooled he learned how to learn. He learned how to solve problems in a nontraditional way. In doing that, he developed an edge in his schoolwork. He enjoys challenges. He pushes himself. He does his homework voluntarily."

Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson is famous for his efforts to protect his private life (like wearing masks while out in the public) and to protect Prince, Paris and Blanket, his children, from the press and the paps, who would've done anything to snap pics of the rarely seen kids. As such it was a necessity for Jackson to have his children privately homeschooled, as he feared his kids would be bombarded by the paps at a traditional school.  After his tragic passing, Jackson's mother, who assumed custody of Jackson's children, continued the tradition by keeping the children homeschooled using the same tutors.

Richard Williams and Oracene Price

Richard Williams and Oracene Price, the parents of Serena and Venus Williams, chose to homeschool their children. The reason was so that the two sisters could have more time in the day to focus on tennis. Of course, we know how that worked out! Serena and Venus were homeschooled starting from elementary school and up to high school. They did have a taste of a traditional school because they finished their studies at a public high school. In this case, the parents should be proud, as they saw their kid's talents at such a young age and gave them the gift of time so they could focus on their intended path.

Matthew and Tina Knowles

Matthew and Tina Knowles, the parents of Beyonce, made sure to give their daughter as much time as she needed to explore the music world, and to learn how to sing. That's why Beyonce was homeschooled.  She credits her parents for allowing her to grow up as a normal kid. She said, "My mother is very strong and will say whatever she feels and protects me always, but she always kept me a normal kid; she made sure I had slumber parties, made sure we hung out with our friends—even after eighth grade, when we started being home-schooled. My father was more focused. He wanted it for me and did everything because he’s my father and wanted me to be happy, but he’s a workaholic.”

Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin

Before Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin split, the two were very much into homeschooling their two kids by hiring a live-in private tutor. In fact, to find the right tutor, they offered the candidate a generous $98,000 a year salary, for two to four hours of work a day, as Jezebel revealed. But Paltrow's demands made it nearly impossible to find the perfect tutor. She wanted a tutor to speak ancient Greek (!#$#), Latin, French and Spanish. On top of that, the tutor had to know how to play two different instruments. Paltrow also said that the family would provide living quarters for the tutor for free. She's either difficult or generous. We'd choose the former.

Mayim Bialik

Mayim Bialik, the co-star of the hit series The Big Bang Theory, advocates attachment parenting, which means she and her husband home-school their children and not let them watch TV, among other things. She revealed to the Washington Times in 2009 why she homeschools her sons, Miles, and Fred. She said, "For those who believe parents know their child the best, and that every child’s needs are different, homeschooling works. I think we have to do what’s best for the family, without judging others’ choices, and let the kids be the proof."

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, who have now split, homeschool their six kids because traditional schools interfere with many of their globetrotting trips and vacations and their work schedule. They also wanted their adopted children to learn about their native roots, which is why they hired a Vietnamese speaking tutor for Pax and someone with an African background for Ethiopian-born Zahara. In an interview with The Independent, Jolie stated, “I do think we live in a different age and the education system hasn’t caught up with our children and our way of life.” Jolie praises homeschooling because it allows their kids to explore their interests. "[When] we travel. . I’m the first person to say, ‘get the schoolwork done as quickly as possible because let’s go out and explore.' I’d rather them go to a museum and learn to play guitar and read and pick a book they love. I feel that there’s got to be a new way to tailor things more directly to our children.”

Kris and Caitlyn

Kris Jenner wanted her youngest daughters, Kendall and Kylie, to be homeschooled starting in 2013 so that they would have more time to pursue career opportunities. However, her husband at the time, opposed the girls dropping out of high school to be homeschooled, and this was one of the reasons that caused them to separate. But Kris always found success as a moma-manager and knew what was best for her youngest because "business commitments" had started to blossom and to miss those opportunities would be a shame. Of course, Kris won.

John Travolta and Kelly Preston

John Travolta and his wife Kelly Preston have been homeschooling for years, before it became a "thing to do" with other celebrities and their children. Their firstborn son, Jett, who had an untimely death at only 16, was homeschooled. It wasn't Travolta and Preston's intention to homeschool at first; the problem was Jett had special needs, and his condition could only make him learn and study with a tutor one on one. Of course, the special attention doesn't happen in normal high schools. But they ultimately embraced homeschooling.

Jon and Kate Gosselin

Jon and Kate Gosselin and their eight children were reality stars in Jon & Kate Plus 8. They have since split, but they continue to homeschool their eight children, which started in 2011. It wasn't by choice but rather a necessity; two of their kids were expelled from their private school. One of their kids, Alexis, allegedly harmed an adult and Alexis and Collin were both abusive to other children in the school.  But they improved their attitude when they were homeschooled. According to a source for Radar, "Kate is thrilled with the progress the pair have been making since they have been homeschooled and Jon thinks that Kate has done a good job getting the two back on track."

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman

Tom Cruise has two children when he was married to Nicole Kidman. Their names are Connor and Isabella, and they were adopted. The two children were primarily educated by Tom's sister. Cruise has nothing against a traditional school. It's just that, as a Scientologist, he's learned that formal education is frowned upon.  So homeschooling is important to Cruise, as well as Scientology, which is a body of religious beliefs and practices that first debuted in 1952 with American author L. Ron Hubbard at the helm.

Katie Holmes

When Tom Cruise was married to Katie Holmes, they briefly home-schooled their daughter Suri when she turned 7. She was homeschooled until 2012. At the time, Holmes said, “We have quite a schedule, you know? And we homeschool Suri — she has a teacher who is with her every day. We like the one-on-one education. . . You really have to go with what the child is wanting.” Holmes couldn't say enough good things about homeschooling. And yet, after she and Cruise divorced, Holmes promptly enrolled her daughter in Catholic school. Maybe that was Holmes' way of getting back at Cruise for their "fake" marriage and his weird desires to be part of a cult. Or maybe not!

Jim Bob & Michelle Duggar

Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar--or the Duggars --are reality stars of the show 19 Kids and Counting. The title says it all. The Duggars have 19 kids and each one of them are homeschooled. Michelle recounted to TLC  her love for homeschooling. "We knew some families that had older children that were homeschooled.. . . [T]heir children seemed so mature and well-rounded. . . as well as intelligent. But besides the academics. . . there was just such a closeness between the parents and the children - a real, genuine love and respect for one another. Jim Bob and I thought, "That's what we want. That is the fruit we want to see in our children and that oneness in our family." So they quickly homeschooled Josh, the oldest, and then the other kids.

Marcia Gay Harden

Tony-award winner and Academy Award winner Marcia Gay Harden is also in favor of homeschooling, but for her, it's only for a short time. She homeschooled her children for a year while filming on location in Los Angeles. Obviously, she wants her whole family to be together, especially if she's shooting and far away from home.  In 2010, she openly talked about homeschooling her daughter, saying, "Eulala is open to being home-schooled for a year, not forever. She’ll soon be 12 going on 13. I feel, not that I won’t have her again, but this is a special time to bond."

Cynthia Bailey

Cynthia Bailey is a reality star in the hit The Real Housewives of Atlanta. Bailey also homeschooled her daughter, Noelle, but it was Noelle, not Bailey, who wanted it. In Season 5, Noelle was not yet a teen, and was depressed while at her school. Bailey said, "[S]he was having some issues in school, not academic but social. The environment for her became one that was spirit-breaking. . .  I know my child very well, and she was not flourishing. . . It was heartbreaking, and I felt so helpless.”

Darrell Waltrip

Darrell Waltrip is a successful race car driver who has three NASCAR Winston Cups and is also a racing commentator with Fox and Foxsports.com. He has two children, Jessica and Sarah. Waltrip is very into homeschooling both his daughters. As he said, "I’m a principal at school – the Waltrip Academy! We homeschool the children. . . And I do Bible and history with them, and a little bit of science. But my main job is I’m the principal, and you *don’t* want to come to the principal’s office!"

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian West

Kanye West and his wife Kim spent a whopping $30,000 a year for their daughter North West so she could attend a pre-kindergarten program. But after that Kanye wanted North to be homeschooled. Kim had to agree, and told In Touch Weekly that she was"terrified that the other kids will pick on North because she is so famous!" Since her birth, Kanye has apparently calmed down with all his outbursts and credits his wife and daughter for such change. He said, “I’ve definitely learned how to compromise more. . . and I’ve learned how to shut up more. Yeah, I think I’m a better human being because of [Kim], and because of my daughter.”
