When you watch the Avengers on the big screen, it definitely looks like they're going to be prepared to take on any situation with ease. But the actors that help bring these characters to life are far more prone to failure. Tony Stark may have been able to make his suit when he was captured in Iron Man (with a box of scraps!) but Robert Downey Jr. wasn't making anything quite as fancy in the '90s when he was spending months behind bars.
If it makes Downey Jr. feel any better, at least he isn't the only Avenger who has legal issues. Anthony Mackie got a reality call when driving under the influence got him in deep trouble.
Drax may also not have a huge interest in engaging in behind the door activities, an addiction to that activity is what caused some serious problems and heartache for Dave Bautista. Though at least, unlike Scarlett Johansson, he didn't have his action get photographed and shared everywhere.
Many people also may not even remember Jeremy Renner's short-lived marriage, but his lack of child support payment has definitely left an ugly mark on his career. These are just some of the things that the cast of Avengers would rather you not know about. And while these were off the screen examples, Josh Brolin also probably doesn't want you talking to him about Jonah Hex anytime soon!
15 Anthony Mackie's Struggles
If Anthony Mackie, better known as The Falcon in the Marvel Universe had a preferred method of transportation it would be flying. And while we aren't too sure what the laws are for drinking and flying, in real life, there are laws against getting around by driving under the influence.
Something Mackie learned the hard way when he was pulled over and according to TMZ was detained for smelling like a man who had broken a law, having watery eyes and refusing to take a breathalyzer.
His punishment wasn't as severe as it could have been, but he was eventually sentenced to complete a DWI program and had his license suspended for 90 days.
14 Renner's Marriage Ends And He's Accused Of Fraud
Jeremy Renner is one of the more private celebrities in Hollywood. While some celebrities elect for a huge wedding that's a big spectacle, Renner instead went for a low-key ceremony that occurred in January 2014 to Sonni Pacheco.
Two months later, Pacheco gave birth to their daughter. But within 10 months of tying the knot, the couple had announced their separation. Yikes!
While amicable differences was the official reason given for their divorce, Pacheco did accuse Renner of fraud in regards to the prenuptial agreements made. Another entry on our list will also discuss the struggles that Renner has had around child support.
13 Dave Bautista Can't Stop This Feeling
Dave Bautista is one of the most lovable characters in the Marvel Universe as the character, Drax. But that lovability is something that has gotten Bautista into some seriously heated situations in his personal life.
During his time in the WWE, Bautista was allegedly linked to several different divas; including at one point having rumors swirl that he was doing all of this behind his now ex-wife's back. Bautista has also admitted in the past to struggling so much with those things because he was addicted to it.
"I don't have a lot of regrets in my life and I haven't been an angel. But if I could change anything, it'd be the chapter with all the women. It hurt the people I love."
12 Let's Pretend The Jonah Hex Movie Doesn't Exist
Josh Brolin is a huge comic book fan, as perhaps evident from the fact that he's involving himself in the upcoming Deadpool movie and is also playing Thanos in the Avengers. But these aren't the only two opportunities that Brolin has had in the superhero world, he just wishes you thought it was.
Brolin appeared in the horrific DC bomb of a movie, Jonah Hex. Despite costing upwards of $50 million to make, it made roughly only $10 million at the box office. Okay, so this isn't a shady secret, but he probably wishes it hadn't come about.
Megan Fox also joined along for the ride, perhaps proving it was the Transformers name that sold tickets and not her. Saying that Deadpool is probably going to make some kind of sassy comment about Jonah Hex in the upcoming movie is probably a pretty safe bet.
11 Chris Hemsworth Dresses Up
Chris Hemsworth public life has stayed clean of many scandals in part to the fact that he has an amazing relationship with his wife, Elsa Pataky, whom he has 3 children with. But he committed a big faux pas when at a New Year's Eve party that was themed around the Lone-Ranger, he decided to dress up as a member of the First Nations people.
Many people were offended by his choice, leading Chris to issue an apology,
"I was stupidly unaware of the offense this may have caused and the sensitivity around this issue. I sincerely and unreservedly apologize to all First Nations people for this thoughtless action."
Really though, the moment he apologized people forgave him very quickly. He makes active changes in the world around him and promotes activism and tries to give back to the community. He may have made a mistake, but he owned up to it, and that's what matters in the end more than anything else.
10 RDJ Was Fired From Ally McBeal
When talking about that time in his life, RDJ said,
"It was my lowest point in terms of addictions. At that stage, I didn't give a f*ck whether I ever acted again." He was later fired after not being able to control his issues. We're sure if you told him then the amount of success he would still amount to he would have called you crazy!
9 Johansson's Life Becomes Public Knowledge
There are countless women in Hollywood who have had their privacy violated and had leaked photos of themselves emerge on the internet. It's perhaps only inevitable that one of the women involved with the Avengers franchise would also have that happen to them. So, not exactly shady, but shady enough for it to cause problems in Hollywood, especially since at the time, there was no real body positive movements.
Johansson shot back at the hacker, saying "There's nothing wrong with that." She went on to say that it was not as though she was filming an adult movie, not that there was anything wrong with that if she does--but basically, just saying she wanted her privacy. Though we're sure she still doesn't want us tracking those photos down!
8 Cobie Never Says Sorry For HIMYM
When you are an actor on a television show, you may find it to be a little bit awkward to go up to the showrunners and say you are uncomfortable with an idea they have for a script. But you still owe it to yourself to do that or you take ownership over the idea.
And while Smulders hasn't commented on the matter, fans were still less than pleased when her character took on an Asian-inspired twist for a season 9 episode of How I Met Your Mother.
The creators apologized saying they were not trying to engage in "yellowface", but it's still a horrible look! Hopefully they, and other television shows and networks will learn from this mistake, as it is definitely not the first time something like this happens.
7 Gwyneth Paltrow And Her GOOP Controversies
Tony Stark is one of the smartest men in the fictional world of superheroes and is able to create seemingly anything that he puts his mind to. In the films, Gwyneth Paltrow plays Stark's assistant Pepper Potts.
But perhaps Paltrow was inspired by the actions of Tony Stark when she decided she should start her own healthy website, complete with various products you can by. Except healthy is a term you should use very lightly with doctors consistently slamming tips put forth by Paltrow's site. Which is probably the last thing you should want for a health company. Though it doesn't seem to be slowing down Paltrow!
6 Chris Pratt's Role In Anna Faris' First Marriage
Chris Pratt and Anna Faris had what appeared to be one of the best marriages in Hollywood prior to their divorce in 2017. But one thing you may not know about the couple was that their origins of a couple may have included actions that were far from worthy of a superhero.
When talking about it in her book Unqualified, Faris admitted she was still married to her first husband when she started an emotional affair with Pratt.
While they didn't get physical until Faris and her husband separated, it is still the type of tabloid gossip that Marvel would want to steer clear from. Especially because Faris alluded to it not taking very long until they were separated until decided to shack up with Chris! Let's hope Chris picks an easier relationship to explain to the public with his next go around.
5 The Brolin And Olsen Version Of Oldboy Earns Under $5 Million
There has always been a trend in Hollywood to take films from other countries that don't really need to be remade and then do it anyway. This was the case with one of the best Asian films of all-time, Oldboy. Shady? Definitely. If you really want to remake a film, remake it with an Asian cast next time, instead of putting mostly white actors.
On top of struggling with the re-casting with a primarily Caucasian cast, the film scored under 50% on Rotten Tomatoes and made under $5 million at the box office.
Avengers castmates Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen and Samuel L. Jackson were all attached to the project which may make for an appealing watch, but you're doing yourself a disservice if you watch it without giving the original a chance first. The best thing about the USA version is that Olsen is something to look forward to, being one of the current most beautiful women in Hollywood. Besides that, just watch the original and save yourself time and trouble.
4 Renner Fails To Pay Child Support
Another entry on our list will talk more about the seemingly horrific relationship between Sonni Pacheco and Jeremy Renner, but their drama can't be contained in one piece. Pacheco went to the courts back in July stating that Renner was struggling to pay the child support required for their child.
Renner had texted her stating,
"I'm not sure why you keep coming after more money here Sonni. I don't have the cash to give you. I'm sorry you can't figure out how to care for [the child] with over 300k."
But it was reported that he had owed upwards of $50,000. Renner ended up settling the case for $16,000 as well as paying for Pacheco's legal fees. Come on Hawkeye, we expected more from you.
3 The Controversy With Johansson's "Ghost In The Shell"
It's Scarlett Johansson's work in The Avengers franchise that perhaps made her a natural selection to play the lead in the film, Ghost In The Shell. The only problem is that Johansson was cast in a role that was written for a person of Asian-descent.
When talking about the controversy that came from the casting announcement with Marie Claire, Johansson stated,
“Diversity is important in Hollywood, and I would never want to feel like I was playing a character that was offensive. Also, having a franchise with a female protagonist driving it is such a rare opportunity. Certainly, I feel the enormous pressure of that —the weight of such a big property on my shoulders."
So, not too good at shifting the talk to feminism. Though it's true, that we need more women on screen, you should give the roles to people who are actually fit to play the part.
2 Chris Evans Was Once Johnny Storm
Okay okay, so this one isn't shady, just a bad career direction. Chris Evans is always going to be able to look back at his career and be pleased with the performance he put forth as Steve Rogers. But nobody would have blamed him if he was hesitant to step back into a superhero costume after his first disappointing venture with Marvel when he was cast as Johnny Storm.
All things considered, we have to hand it to Evans. If this is the worst thing that he has ever done, it really isn't that bad. Fairly, though the movie didn't do amazing, he brought dedication to his role, as usual, and played it to the best of his abilities. Out of screen, Evans seems like a stand up guy.
While both Fantastic Four movies earned over $100 million at the box office, both struggled with critics and definitely don't hold up well over time and could have ended up being a much bigger deal than they ended up being. Flame out!
1 The Legal Issues Of RDJ
Robert Downey Jr.'s issue with hard drugs became apparent towards the end of the 90s and early 2000's. This included several arrests and various treatment programs. After failing to show up for testing, Downey Jr. also spent 6 months in jail in 1997 and followed that up with another missed test that led to him spending close to a year in an Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison.
His issues caused the end of his long-term relationship with Sarah Jessica Parker, as well as his first wife Deborah Falconer who he married after only 42 days. Thankfully Downey Jr. has admitted to being clean since 2003.
Since then, he has made one of the biggest comebacks in Hollywood. His return really began with his breakout with Iron Man, bringing him to the spotlight in a way he deserved, and he handled fame with a newfound grace. He is truly someone who rose from the ashes.
