Jeremy Renner is one of Hollywood’s most prolific actors. With two Academy Award nominations and titles like Mission Impossible, Bourne Supremacy and The Avengers under his belt in just under five years, we can see him fast growing into a popular Hollywood regular.

Like almost every celebrity in Hollywood, his life beyond the silver screen is not without its problems; with controversy following him because of a comment he made or something he did. So many times, the media tried to expose the man behind the curtain and several times he fought back. And we had somewhat grown to accept that this was part of who he was, well because his movies were so good.

However, after his recent no-show in not only the Avengers: Infinity War trailers and promotional material but also the entire movie, it got many asking if he had been cut off. This is because prior to the movie’s release, he had been quoted saying that he was shooting scenes for the latest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

With many production companies distancing themselves from individuals bogged with, could Jeremy Renner’s days as a Hollywood A-lister be numbered?

Here, are 15 reasons why Jeremy Renner and Hollywood don't work together anymore, and why not even Marvel wants Jeremy Renner around anymore.

Black Widow Blunder

In April 2015, Jeremy Renner and Chris Evans got into trouble for a joke they made during an interview with Digital Spy UK, while they were promoting the then recent addition to the Avengers series, Avengers: Age of Ultron. The statement came in response to the interviewer asking them what they thought of fan’s expectations that Black Widow would end up with one of them.

This was in reference to the fact that Scarlett’s role in the movie had gotten flirty with more than one character in the series.

Chris Evans would later on apologize for the joke, reiterating that their statement was not in any way directed to or in reference to Scarlett Johansson herself or any of her real life relationships, but a fictional character and fictional behavior. Renner would also issue a statement in which he said that his statement was not to be taken seriously in any way as it was a way to poke fun into a tedious press tour.

Whether or not it was intended to be a pun, it is clear that many did not take this reference to Black Widow kindly, with the backlash and social media outcry that it came with being testament to this. (Source: Time)

He Complained About His Character Hawkeye

Ever since he pointed his bow and arrow at Thor in the Mexican desert, Clint Barton a.k.a. Hawkeye has been an integral part of the Avenger’s storyline.

When the idea for Hawkeye first dropped, it came after the success of Iron Man and the plan was to have both Hawkeye and Black Widow appear in Iron Man 2. However, only Black Widow made it to the screen. When Renner had gone in to discuss Captain America, probably with the hopes of appearing in the movie, he got wind of the conversation about Hawkeye and it got him interested.

Two years later, his dream came true. He made his brief introduction as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and skilled archer in the first Thor movie before becoming part of the Avengers.

However, during a chat with Hero Complex, Renner expressed that he was disappointed not to be able to portray the character that he had initially discussed with Zak Penn and he attributed it largely to Joss Whedon rewriting the story and modifying the script.

He lamented that after the rewrite was completed, he was not the character that he signed up to play and there was lack of a backstory on who he was and how ended up in the movie. He was also not jazzed about playing bad guy Hawkeye. At least he was in the movie though, right? (Source: ScreenRant)

He Wants A Hawkeye Solo Movie...Fast

Ever since Iron Man hit our screens 10 years ago and acted as the launch pad for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, many franchises have been birthed, causing us not to get enough of the comics illustrated by Stan Lee. Franchises like Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers, and Spiderman have all come to life in the last decade.

One trajectory that Marvel seems to want to venture into is giving each of its superheroes a spin-off solo movie, mainly so that we can understand their origin story. They did it for Iron Man and Captain America before and during the making of Avengers and both were definitely successes.

One Marvel supporting hero that wants a spin-off solo movie is none other than Hawkeye. Ever since he joined the fray in the first installment, he has been a regular (well, with the exception of Infinity war.) Renner has expressed interest in starring in a Hawkeye movie, but wants Marvel to get a move on with it as he does not want to put on the archer’s costume when he has passed the half century mark.

This would not be such a bad idea as his character has been one of the underused and overlooked of all the Avengers. (Source: Cinemablend)

His Messy Divorce

Divorce can be ugly. It does not matter who you are; celebrity or a regular person, divorce has a way of bringing out an ugly side of people who once loved each other. It drains one emotionally, physically and let’s not talk about the financial implications of the process. The only thing worse than getting a divorce, is getting a divorce in the public eye.

Jeremy Renner caught himself in this quagmire when his wife of 10 months, Sonni Pacheco, filed for divorce in December 2014 citing irreconcilable differences.

From the get-go, it was clear that things were about to get messy. According to court documents obtained by E! News, Sonni demanded that Renner return her allegedly stolen passport, birth certificate, and social security card and that he be barred from concealing them.

As more court documents got to the media, it shed light on the couple’s messy marriage. Renner alleged that Pacheco – with whom he has a daughter Ava – exercised bad judgment when it came to the child and that once left her without supervision for over 15 minutes. He also alleged that she threatened to reveal intimate videos of him.

The divorce was finalized in a month after the court papers were signed. (Source: TheWrap)

The Jeremy Renner App

With social media having revolutionized communication and brought everyone into the same pool, big or small, poor or rich, celebrities have had to come up with new and innovative ways to keep in touch with their mammoth of adoring fans, as well as stay relevant. No celebrity wants to be yesterday’s news, with fans asking Lindsay who?

In 2017, Jeremy Renner introduced an app, “Jeremy Renner”, which was an instant hit with his many fans. It was meant to be a small haven for his ardent fan base, and initially, it was; with the fans exchanging memes, selfies and even diet tips. However, over time, it also became a battleground filled with controversy and drama.

From rumors that one would be blocked if they spoke negatively about Jeremy Renner the person or the app, to bullying allegations, to when the app was allegedly shut down so as to delete some damning comments, it seemed like all was not well with the Rennerheads.

Then there was the ‘small’ issue about a contest that was held on the app to raise money for Hurricane Harvey victims, with the winner getting the opportunity to meet Renner on the set of the Avengers. There were allegations of rigging of the contests in the winner’s favor. Also, the meeting with Jeremy did not occur on the set of Avengers but in his home, which many termed as false advertising. The Rumors

Questions about Jeremy Renner’s alignment began in 2010 because of a comment made by his old teacher to The National Enquirer. The teacher was quoted saying that he had never had the pleasure of meeting Jeremy’s boyfriend but the fact that Jeremy swung that way had never been a primary concern.

He was quiet about the allegations for a while, choosing not to issue a statement or explanation about the rumors. Renner finally spoke out about the rumors to The Hollywood Reporter in 2012, expressing disgust with the media for linking him to everyone from Kristoffer Winters to his Hurt Locker co-star Anthony Mackie.

He said that what disgusted him the more than the rumors of him being that way, was that his personal life was being peeped into – something he did not appreciate. He reiterated that he never responded to questions about his personal life and was not about to go into the business of proving what he was or what he was not.

He would then bluntly open up during a 2015 profile for Playboy, asking if it was such a terrible thing for one to love the same gender, if it had to be viewed in such a bad light. He would crown off by asking, “Don't you wish we were in a world where we're not shaming, judging, and boxing people in?" Mic drop.

The Golden Globes Gaffe

It is every artist’s dream, no matter which category you fall in, to host or be part of an award show. Not only does it accentuate your resume, but also in a way shows that you can be diverse and create some impromptu material when required to.

Jeremy Renner got such an opportunity. At the annual Golden Globe awards of 2015, he got involved in one of the moments that go so many scratching their heads. He took to the stage with pop star Jennifer Lopez to present the award for best male actor in a TV movie or miniseries.

When the time came to open the envelope containing the name of the winner, Jennifer insisted that she be the one to open it since she had the nails. Renner concurred, also adding that she also had the ‘golden globes’. As innocent as this reference may have been, it did not particularly go down easy with many present and those absent.

He would, later on, take to twitter to explain his actions, stating that such things should not be taken too seriously. Although later on JLO too would come to his defense, it is safe to say that the damage had already been done. (Source: PopSugar)

His Remarks About Equal Pay In Hollywood

In 2013, Jeremy Renner, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams appeared in David O. Russel’s crime film – American Hustle. They would later learn that their female co-stars earned substantially less compared to their male counterparts.

This prompted Jennifer Lawrence to pen a powerful essay about pay inequality in Hollywood. Bradley Cooper was quick to get behind the article, promising to do his part to close the wage gap between male and female stars. He even vowed to negotiate for equal pay for both male and female actors before committing to a film.

When Jeremy Renner was asked about this, his response was “That’s not my job”.

His comments naturally generated a lot of opinions and emotions as they seemed to contradict the sentiments of his co-star Bradley Cooper. He would later take to social media to clarify his clearly misunderstood comments. He conferred that he did not know about contracts and money. He reminded them that he was a performer and that all he knew was human behavior, and that he let other people deal with those as he stuck to what he knew.

He would then clarify that he had always supported equal pay for women who were deserving of it; that a person should only be rewarded based on their merit and performance. (Source: ETOnline)

He Defended His Remarks About Black Widow

We all make mistakes, even superheroes like Jeremy Renner. What is most important is not the mistake itself, but learning from it, picking ourselves up and moving on with our lives. Every other day, we have a celebrity taking to Twitter or Instagram to apologize and clarify on something controversial which they said, did or wore. It is the way of life in Hollywood; mess up, apologize publicly and hope that your fans will accept it.

Jeremy, however, took the road less traveled. After his derogative term in reference to Scarlett Johansson’s character in Avengers, Black Widow, we expected him to follow in the footsteps of fellow co-star Chris Evans in apologizing and taking back what he said.

It was the noble thing to do, owing also to the social media outcry that followed his interview on Digital Spy UK while promoting Avengers: Age of Ultron.

When he popped into Conan O’Brien’s show Conan for more marvel talk, the host brought up the controversy that arose surrounding his derogatory referral to Black Widow. In response, Jeremy sort of half-apologized for the joke. He would later take an annoyed tone in reference to the joke, stating that he had no apologies for it even though it got him into a lot of trouble. (Source: Time)

His Support Of Pink's Mother's Day Post

Every year on 8th March, we dedicate a day to celebrate the women in the world; for their strength, tenacity and grit in fighting and overcoming everything they face to become the powerful mothers, sisters, wives and daughters that have shaped our society for better.

On International Women’s day 2016, rock artist P!nk took to twitter to celebrate the women in the world whom she said use their brains, work ethic, strength, talent and magic that only they possess. She went on to celebrate them for not using their bodies, their bust and bum to get attention.

Everyone who read this tweet quickly realized that she was in a way throwing shade at Kim Kardashian who had recently taken the internet by storm when she posted a mirror selfie of herself in her birthday suit.

As though the war was not enough, with Amber Rose joining the fray to support former nemesis Kim, Jeremy Renner also keyed in his two cents, retweeting Pink’s lengthy post and captioning it “Strength and honor my lady! #strength #honor.”

Although it seemed like a random show of support, Jeremy and Pink have history, with Jeremy having appeared in the rocker’s 2003 music video for the song ‘Trouble’ as a sheriff.

His Injuries

We all love stunts, especially when we are not the one’s performing them. It is an insatiable desire among movie lovers, causing us to place more demands on production studios to wow us even more with such incredible feats of green screen and CGI manipulation.

No action movie, well any good one for that matter, can lack such scenes that freak us out and excite us at the same time.

As time has gone by, more and more actors have had to step up and learn to do their own stunts, borrowing a leaf from the legendary Jackie Chan who does his own stunts in all his movies. This is to rule out the option of hiring a stunt double and a probable bigger paycheck.

Jeremy has become one such actor. During the filming for the upcoming action-comedy Tag, Renner injured both of his arms while filming a stunt. He fractured his right elbow and left wrist. He took to Instagram to showcase his supported arms and wrist.

Because of his injuries, the shooting for Tag had to be moved around so as to accommodate him. This can prove to be bad news for Renner a no production house will want him s long as he still has bandages and reinforcements on his arms. (Source: VanityFair)

Being Dropped From Avengers: Infinity War

We were all psyched for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s latest installment to the Avengers franchise. After the post credit scene in Avengers: Age of Ultron all we knew is that we would finally be introduced to Thanos, the one character who had found a place in many Marvel movies so far.

As production was ongoing, we knew very little about what to expect and with bated breath and the patience of a full bladder, we waited.

When the first trailer and character posters came out, everyone was quick to ask, “Where is Hawkeye?” The bow welding marksman was missing from every poster and trailer and the eventual movie. What made this interesting was that he had been quoted saying that he was filming scenes in the said movie, causing many eyebrows to be raised concerning whether or not he had been dropped from the franchise.

Many were quick to come up with reasons for his no-show in what was his biggest movie role; from the injuries he sustained during the shoot of the movie Tag, to the storyline that had occurred in Captain America: Winter Soldier where he had signed The Sokovia Accords and had to sit out the fight.

We do not know for sure, but we sure hope he was not axed from being an avenger. (Source: Bustle)

Some Of His Projects

An artist’s choice of projects have been known to either catapult or hamper the growth of their careers. Every project goes into their portfolio and the more high profile the portfolio, the better chances are at landing those coveted roles; you know, like The Avengers and every movie Tom Hardy has been in.

Jeremy Renner’s portfolio reads as such. With titles like the said Avengers, Mission Impossible, and American Hustle, we can see why he is continually landing those big roles.

However, he has also been linked with some controversial roles that have not done justice to his career. One such role was in the movie Kill the Messenger. In this movie, Renner plays the role of newspaper reporter Gary Webb, who published a series of investigative reports in the San Jose Mercury News in 1996. He dubbed the series, “Dark Alliance.”

In the said investigative reports, Webb leveled some damning allegations against some state offices and their involvement in the crack epidemic of the 1980s. This series sparked a public storm that saw his career go down the drain leading to his eventual passing in 2004.

The movie was not quite the success that the studio had hoped it would be and sometimes, such roles come back to haunt you. Just ask Elizabeth Berkeley. (Source: LATimes)

Bros Before...Well You Know

It is a universal unwritten law that men are supposed to have their male friend’s back. No matter the heights they rise to or the depths to which they plunge to, they are required to stand by their friends. If it means lying or corroborating the story their friend purports, whether or not it’s true, then that is what they do. Hence the phrase popularized by Barney Stinson.

Well, it seems like Jeremy Renner got himself a true bro. Renner had a “live in business partner”, Kristoffer Winters who was the couple’s roommate and whom Renner referred to as ‘my brother’. During the proceedings for his divorce from wife Sonni Pacheco, Winters played a key role as a witness, providing very damning evidence against Renner’s now ex-wife.

He testified of the several times that Sonni had confided in him about not believing in marriage, and that the only reason she had agreed to marry Jeremy was so that she would become a United States citizen and avoid deportation back to Canada. He even reported that she had threatened to reveal intimate videos about him (Renner) if he did not treat her better, and not fight her about a green card or money issues.

Now, if only our college roommates had been that observational. (Source: People)

He Is Considering Retiring

If there is one thing that Jeremy Renner and his Avenger’s Character Clint Barton have in common, it is that they desire to retire from the action. While he portrayed Clint in Avengers: Age of Ultron, there was a scene where the heroes had to hide out in Clint’s secret home that had been set up by Nick Fury.

His reason for doing so was so that he could shield his family from the occupational hazard of being Hawkeye. He (Clint) made it known that after defeating Ultron, he would retire from archery to settle down with his family. Though he quickly came out from retirement in Captain America: Civil War.

In real life, Jeremy has a 5 year old daughter – Ava Berlin Renner – for whom he has considered retiring so that he can focus on being a full-time parent. He has said that he does not like being away from his daughter and his family for the long shooting durations, and has severally thought about hanging up his cape so that he can be there for his daughter, just like Hawkeye did.

If and when it does happen, it won’t be so different from his fictional character’s retirement. (Source: USMagazine)
