It’s important to have a strong support system in your life, especially when you are vying for a career in Hollywood. The ups and downs of working in show business can be nerve-wracking and heartbreaking. So, at the end of the day, it’s comforting to know that you have a parent that has your back. Unfortunately, for the celebrities on this list, they are either struggling with one or both parents. They ultimately end up feeling resentment and often speak candidly about how unsatisfied they are with the type of relationships they have with mommy and daddy. The drama that floats around between these celebs and their parents is downright embarrassing and, as we can only imagine, equally frustrating. There is nothing worse than having a parent who runs to sell stories to the tabloids rather than having a relationship with their child. Or having a child who is so problematic that you don’t know where to begin repairing the relationship. It’s hard enough when someone has a strained relationship with a family member, but we can only imagine that it is ten times worse when your reputation literally dictates the types of jobs you get or if you get work at all. They say all press is good press, but we beg to differ. No one wants to have to explain things from their past because their mom or dad (or both!) decided that they need a little extra cash in their pockets.
15 Lindsay Lohan And Her Parents
Lindsay Lohan’s relationship with her father is fragmented on so many levels. The two have gone back and forth through the media, shaming one another for ways they believe they have been done wrong. Throughout most of his life, Michael Lohan has been in trouble with the law, and at one-point, Lindsay was the one supporting her family through her acting gigs. She sat down with Piers Morgan in 2013 and spoke very candidly about the chaos her father brings to her life saying, “He won't change. I just think there comes a point where you just kind of have to accept what it is. Whenever I do try to bring him back into my life, he creates chaos for me and uses it to his advantage. He's been really good and then really crazy my whole life.” It sounds like keeping him out of her life is the best decision.
14 Angelina Jolie And Her Father
Angelina Jolie has two famous parents, but you wouldn’t know it by the way she interacts with them. Her real problem is with her father, Jon Voigt. The dad and daughter have gone from tolerating one another to hating one another and back again. It never truly seems to be civil. Before they “reconciled” he has publicly gone on record saying that she needs help and suffers from “mental problems." Voigt, at one point, claimed that Jolie holds a grudge against him for his treatment of her late mother, Marcheline Bertrand. Even if this is true, a father should never speak ill of his children, especially in public. The two have said to have forgotten their difference in 2011 and he has even met his many grandchildren. Hopefully, they can keep it up.
13 Eminem And His Mother
You know you and your parents are on bad terms when your mom happily sues you. Eminem has used his music to get some things off his chest. He regularly raps about his unhappy upbringing, how horrible his mom was to him growing up, and the fact that his father left him when he was a child. However, him being honest once put a significant rift between him and his mother, to the point where she sued him for $10 million. She claimed he slandered her in his music back in 1999. In 2013, he took on the role of the bigger person and wrote an apologetic track titled “Headlights." He essentially admits any wrongdoing he had in their relationship going down the drain. Their relationship still isn't the best but it's better than what it was.
12 Jennifer Aniston And Her Mother
Jennifer Aniston has a less than stellar relationship with her mom, Nancy Dow. It isn’t fully known why or when their relationship began to go downhill but the straw that broke the camel's back was her mom’s book. She said that all her life her mother was very critical of her and it caused a rift that made her feel like she couldn’t look to her for support. She described her mother as an "unforgiving person who holds petty grudges." During an interview with Hollywood Reporter, Aniston said that their relationship has gotten better over the years. “We're all fine. She had a temper. I can't tolerate that. If I get upset, I will discuss [things]. I will never scream and get hysterical like that.” It all sounds very sad.
11 Heather Graham And Her Parents
Ever since Heather Graham announced to her family that she wanted to be an actress, it has been a downward spiral. Her parents are deeply religious, and they were not big fans of the idea but it didn’t go beyond repair until she announced that she would be starring in Boogie Nights. The film made her a star but cemented her rift with her mom and dad for life. She admits that she hasn’t spoken to her parents since 1997. Her parents did an interview with The Sun and her father, Jim Graham, said, “Joan and I have endured many sleepless nights questioning how and why it all went wrong. To this day, we honestly don’t know… Every time we read these supposed reasons for why we are not part of Heather’s life, it gets more and more frustrating as they are simply not true."
10 Kendra Wilkinson And Her Mother
Kendra Wilkinson has had problems with both of her parents. The problems with her mom played out on the reality show, The Girls Next Door. Her mom would come to the Playboy Mansion and essentially try anything she could to become one of Hef’s girlfriends herself or work her way into the magazine. Keep in mind, she was in her 50's. Her father was barely in her life after her parents divorced in 1994. Wilkinson and her mom essentially stopped talking after the show ended. They reconciled for a bit in 2014 but it didn’t last long. She wanted her mother to stop allegedly leaking information about her to the tabloids, whereas Patti claims that she wants nothing to do with the cameras. She actually feels like being in front of the camera for so long has changed her daughter.
9 Demi Lovato And Her Father
Demi Lovato describes her father as abusive and their relationship as complicated. During a black and white video that she released on her YouTube channel, the singer said that she didn’t have much of a relationship with her father, who passed away from cancer in 2013. "I was very conflicted when he passed because he was abusive," she said. She explained that he was mean, but he wanted to be a good person. Their relationship was terribly strained because he had mental health issues too. Lovato has come to terms with who he was and how he affected her life because having mental health issues herself has made her realize that it wasn’t all her father’s fault. She even dedicated a song to him on her album titled “Father” and started a scholarship in his name.
8 Drew Barrymore And Her Mother
Drew Barrymore has a lot of reasons to not be close to her parents. She had no supervision as she navigated Hollywood as a child. She was partying (sometimes with her mom) at age 8 and doing a lot of things that an 8-year-old child shouldn’t. She was emancipated at age 15 and has been estranged from her mother for most of her life afterward. In 2014, during an interview with Marie Claire, she got candid about how her relationship with her mother was now. She said "It's the hardest subject in my life. I've never just been angry with her. I've always felt guilt and empathy and utter sensitivity. But we can’t really be in each other's lives at this point." Now that she is a mother of her own kids she is even more open to trying to salvage what she can. In 2017, they reunited for Mother’s Day.
7 Frances Bean Cobain And Courtney Love
Frances Bean Cobain is the only child of Kurt Cobain so, naturally, people are obsessed with her. But, for most of her life, she has had a very tricky relationship with her mom, Courtney Love. Love is a hot mess everyone knows it so the idea that she is someone’s parent is shocking. Frances was taken away from her mother a number of times, which could have contributed to their rocky relationship. It also didn’t help that Love criticized Frances for choosing to stay placed with her grandmother and aunt on her father’s side of the family. Love has taken to social media a number of times to express how much she can’t stand Cobain’s “white-trash, money-grubbing family." Bashing your daughter’s family is no the way to her heart.
6 Liv Tyler And Steven Tyler
Liv Tyler kind of shocked the world when she said that her lovable dad, Steven, Tyler wasn’t the best father in the world. We all felt duped, he just seems so cool and fun. Liv said that she doesn’t really have a relationship with her dad because “they never really hit it off." She said, "In the past few years, we haven’t been very close. He has been going through a lot of things on his own and he has not been there… he hasn’t been around that much for us. So that’s been hard … I wish, I wish, I really wish he was around more, to know Milo more, but he has to go through what he goes through." However, that was in 2009, and the two seem to be in a better place. She admits it’s not the best, but it’s slowly working.
5 Justin Bieber And His Father
Justin Bieber said that his relationship with his mom is “pretty nonexistent." When did this happen? In an interview with Billboard Magazine, he described their relationship as “cooled” and he takes all the blame for it. He said he became distant because he was ashamed of what he had become. “We spent some time not talking, so it takes time to rebuild that trust. She’s living in Hawaii now, so it’s hard, but getting better. She’s an amazing woman and I love her." He said he is afraid that he disappointed her with his recent behavior. Bieber takes all the blame for this and can’t truly say that his mother did nothing to cause the rift. He only mentions one thing that he didn’t like, which was her trying to push different pastors on him early on in his career. Maybe that was her way of trying to keep him grounded.
4 Brie Larson And Her Father
When Brie Larson was making the media rounds for her film, The Room, she told Elle magazine that she was able to draw from personal experience to play her role. She had a tough childhood. Her parents divorced when she was 10 and soon after she stopped hearing from her father. For 10 long years, he was non-existent. She described their situation as unfavourable saying, "As a kid, I tried to understand him and understand the situation. But he didn't do himself any favors. I don't think he ever really wanted to be a parent. It wasn't until truly recently that I realized that's why so much of my work was so volatile." She even admitted that when she was no longer legally bound to visit him she jumped at the chance to essentially not see him again.
3 Oliver Hudson & Kate Hudson And Their Estranged Father
Oliver and Kate Hudson don’t even consider their biological father to be their father. They consider their mom’s long-term boyfriend, Kurt Russell, to be their true father. The siblings regularly comment on their father's absence on social media by calling Father’s Day “abandonment day." In 2015 after that abandonment day post, their father, Bill Hudson, actually reached out to Oliver and is attempting to build a relationship. For the first time in 12 years, they had at least acknowledged one another. As for Kate, she has no time for him. She has done a few interviews where she describes her father as basically a loser. She told Howard Stern that she has forgiven her father, but it sounds like it’s more her own benefit than his. She called forgiveness her “greatest tool."
2 Adele And Her Father
Adele’s estranged father spoke to a tabloid about how heartbroken he was over their fractured relationship. However, the timing of the interview was just too convenient. Adele told her own side of their relationship and even added that her father has "blown it." She was ready to reconcile with him, but that interview ticked her off something fierce. Their relationship has been a mess since he left her mom when she was three years old. Adele was so mad during an interview with Vogue that she said, “If I ever see him I will spit in his face.” she alluded to the fact that he only did the interview because he was getting paid. She didn’t want him back in her life if he was after her money. Can you blame her? After years of not being around all of a sudden, he wants a relationship when she’s a Grammy winner and a millionaire.
1 Ariel Winter And Her Mother
Ariel Winter’s parenting battle played out for the world to see. The Modern Family star became emancipated from her mother in 2015 after years of being treated like a workhorse. Starting in 2012, Winter’s accused her mother, Chrystal Workman, of physical and emotional abuse. The transcripts from the courts revealed some wild accusations by Winter’s lawyer. Winter was so happy to be away from her mother that she took to Twitter to let her fans know what was up by writing, "I am now officially emancipated!!! I'm really lucky I have an amazing support system and lovely people in my life who have given me the support and guidance to have been given this wonderful opportunity." She seems to be doing a lot better and has no contact with her mom.
